TVET July intake expected to hit 150,000 applications, says Zahid

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi believes that the number of youths applying for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes nationwide for the July intake, which closes this June, will reach 150,000.
Zahid, who is also the national TVET chairman, said this was based on the number of applications received since the intake process was centralised under the TVET Intake Unit (UP_TVET) early last month.
He said that a total of 106,000 applications had been received from youths across the country between April 1 and the end of the month under the new system.
Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, said the TVET pathway should be given due attention as a practical alternative that offers a promising future.
"If they manage to reach Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) Level 3, it is already equivalent to the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and can secure them a minimum salary of RM2,500," he said at the closing ceremony of the Federal Territories-level 2025 National Youth Day celebration at the Kuala Lumpur level last night.
For those pursuing SKM Levels 4 and 5, Zahid added that the qualifications are recognised as equivalent to a diploma, enabling them to further their studies in higher education.
"Six universities under the Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN) accept students who have attained SKM Level 5," he said.
The MTUN institutions include Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah, Universiti Selangor (Unisel) and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UMP).
Zahid acknowledged that while the mainstream education pathway, namely SPM and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), is suited for academically inclined students, not all excel in that environment.
"But some have a passion for technical fields. TVET is always ready to welcome them into its institutions," he said.
To support working adults opting for TVET upskilling and reskilling, Zahid said the government has introduced a scheme to ease their transition.
"We will provide a daily allowance to compensate for income loss during their training," he added.
In May 2024, the UP_TVET system, developed by the Human Resources Ministry, was launched to streamline all applications for entry into TVET institutions across 12 ministries and private agencies nationwide through a single channel.

Government confirms no plans to change Bank Rakyat status

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has no intention to alter Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia Bhd's status from a cooperative bank to a commercial bank, according to Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick. He confirmed Bank Rakyat's current standing remains unchanged as a cooperative institution. Any future transition would necessitate approval through multiple channels including member consensus. 'First through a general meeting of members, secondly, Bank Rakyat is also subject to the Central Bank of Malaysia Act under Bank Negara (BNM),' Ewon stated during his parliamentary address. He further clarified that the Malaysia Co-operative Societies Commission would also need to approve such changes. 'What I can confirm is that Bank Rakyat remains a cooperative bank... there are no plans yet in that direction,' he emphasized. This clarification came in response to an inquiry from Dr Radzi Jidin regarding recent media speculation. Separately, Ewon announced ministry plans to establish a regulatory framework for social enterprise accreditation. This initiative falls under Phase 2 of the Malaysia Social Entrepreneurship Action Plan 2029. The accreditation process for social enterprises has been operational since 2019. 'As of August 2025, there are 520 business entities, including MSMEs and cooperatives that have been accredited as SE,' he reported. These accreditations span three distinct levels recognizing different stages of social enterprise development. Regarding veterans' cooperatives, Ewon provided current operational statistics. 'In 2024, a total of 82 veterans' cooperatives were registered with SKM, involving 9,059 members,' he shared. These cooperatives hold accumulated share capital amounting to RM2.5 million. Total assets reach RM10.3 million with earnings valued at RM696,470. Most veterans' cooperatives currently operate on a micro scale. Their business activities span oil palm plantations, agriculture, rental, investment and services. The ministry supports potential collaborations with Koperasi Angkatan Tentera Malaysia Berhad. 'KUSKOP and SKM have no objection if Koperasi Angkatan Tentera Malaysia Berhad intends to collaborate in sharing expertise and business operations,' Ewon concluded. - Bernama

Gov't Has No Plans To Change Bank Rakyat Status To Commercial Bank

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- The government has no plans to change the status of Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia Bhd (Bank Rakyat) from a cooperative bank to a commercial bank, says Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick. He said that for now, Bank Rakyat remained a cooperative bank and any decision to change its status would depend on its members as well as other procedures. 'It involves several levels of approval if it were to transition to a commercial bank, first through a general meeting of members, secondly, Bank Rakyat is also subject to the Central Bank of Malaysia Act under Bank Negara (BNM). 'In addition, part of the process would need to go through the Malaysia Co-operative Societies Commission (SKM). What I can confirm is that Bank Rakyat remains a cooperative bank... there are no plans yet in that direction (to convert into a commercial bank),' he said when winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) for his ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today. He explained the matter after Dr Radzi Jidin (PN-Putrajaya) interjected to seek clarification regarding media reports on the intention of making Bank Rakyat a commercial bank. Meanwhile, Ewon said the Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Ministry (KUSKOP) would establish a regulatory body and appropriate legal framework for the accreditation of social enterprises (SE) under Phase 2 of the Malaysia Social Entrepreneurship Action Plan 2029 (SEMy2030) for the 2026 to 2030 period. He said the SE rating process had been introduced since 2019 and was still being implemented. 'As of August 2025, there are 520 business entities, including MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) and cooperatives that have been accredited as SE under three levels, namely Accredited Social Enterprise ( Basic Social Enterprise (SE.B) and Tunas Social Enterprise (Tunas SE),' he said. On veterans' cooperatives, Ewon said that in 2024, a total of 82 veterans' cooperatives were registered with SKM, involving 9,059 members, with accumulated share capital amounting to RM2.5 million, total assets of RM10.3 million and earnings valued at RM696,470.
