Sensex Today.
The domestic equities market on Wednesday opened in green marginally ahead of the RBI MPC policy. The BSE Sensex rose by 73.2 points to close at 80,781.25 in the opening trade, while the NSE Nifty was trading marginally higher by 11.2 points to trade at 24,661.31.
Among the 30 companies on Sensex, 19 stocks were trading in green. Among the top gainers were Adani Ports, Trent, Bharti Airtel, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and BEL rising by up to 1.72%.
On the other hand, among the laggards were Sun Pharma, Infosys, Eternal, HCL Tech, and Tech Mahindra.
In the broader markets, the midcap and smallcap indices were also down by 0.17% and 0.30%, respectively.
Slippage past 24670 rendered the trend sideways yesterday. Despite bargain hunting lifting Nifty later in the day, momentum failed to sustain. 'Not surprisingly, only about 43% of Nifty 500 constituents closed above their respective VWAP signalling a negative bias. Yet, we believe that the 24450-24850 band needs to be broken for directional trades to emerge, with 24540-727 seen as a sideways range," said Anand James, chief market strategist of Geojit Investments Ltd.

India Becomes Top Smartphone Supplier To US, Electronics Output Hits Rs 12 Lakh Crore

Last Updated: Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced India is now the top smartphone supplier to the US, with electronics manufacturing valued at Rs 12 lakh crore. News18 Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday said India has become the leading supplier of smartphones to the United States, with electronics manufacturing in the country now valued at Rs 12 lakh crore, TOI reported. Speaking at the inauguration of metro projects in Bengaluru, Vaishnaw highlighted that India's electronic production has grown sixfold in the past 11 years. He added that electronic exports have surged eightfold to Rs 3 lakh crore and reaffirmed India's position as the world's second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, TOI noted. 'Our electronic production has grown six times in the last 11 years. Today, electronics manufacturing has touched Rs 12 lakh crore. Electronic exports have increased by eight times… Today, it has grown to Rs 3 lakh crore. India has become the second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world," Vaishnaw said, as quoted by TOI. According to official data cited by TOI, India had only two mobile manufacturing units in 2014; today, there are over 300. Back in 2014-15, just 26% of mobile phones sold in India were made domestically, with the rest imported. Now, 99.2% of phones sold in the country are manufactured locally. The Union Minster Jitin Prasada 'The PLI Scheme for LSEM has already attracted a cumulative investment of INR 12,390 crore, led to a cumulative production of Rs 8,44,752 crore with exports of Rs 4,65,809 crore and generated additional employment of 1,30,330 (direct jobs) till Jun'25," the minister said. Minister further informed Parliament that the country's mobile import demand decreased by 0.02 per cent in 2024-25, from an outstanding 75 per cent in 2014-15. 'PLI Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing has significantly impacted the mobile manufacturing sector in India particularly in transforming India from a net importer to a net exporter of mobile phones. Bharat is now the second largest mobile manufacturing country in the world," the minister said. Minister Prasada informed that the PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT hardware has so far attracted a total investment of Rs 717.13 crore, resulting in cumulative production worth Rs 12,195.84 crore and the creation of 5,056 direct jobs as of June 2025. He further stated that India received USD 4,071 million in foreign direct investment (FDI) in the electronics manufacturing sector over the past five years, starting from FY 2020-21. Of this, USD 2,802 million came from companies benefiting under the Ministry of Electronics and IT's PLI scheme. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. South Korea's Military Shrinks By 20% In Six Years As Male Population Declines

Last Updated: South Korea's military shrank by 20% in the past six years to 450,000 troops, largely due to a sharp drop in the population of males of enlistment age. South Korea's military has shrunk by 20 per cent over the past six years to 450,000 troops, largely due to a sharp decline in the population of males of enlistment age for mandatory service in the country, which has the world's lowest birthrate, Reuters said, citing a report on Sunday. The sharp drop in the pool of eligible men for military service is also leading to a shortage of officers, the defence ministry noted in its report. If this trend persists, it could create operational challenges, the report warned. The report was made to the ruling Democratic Party member of parliament, Choo Mi-ae, whose office released it. South Korea's military strength has been gradually shrinking since the early 2000s, when it had roughly 690,000 troops. The decline quickened in the late 2010s, leaving about 563,000 active-duty soldiers and officers by 2019. North Korea is believed to have an active-duty military of about 1.2 million, according to the latest estimate by the defence ministry in 2022. The population of 20-year-old males declined by 30% to 230,000 between 2019 and 2025, according to government data, the age when most men who pass a physical exam enlist for military service, which is now 18 months long. The military attributes the reduction in service periods to enhanced capabilities, supported by its alliance with the United States and the growth of a defence industry that has emerged as a major arms exporter. In 1953, following the Korean War armistice, able-bodied men served a 36-month military term. In 2025, South Korea's defence budget exceeds 61 trillion won ($43.9 billion), surpassing the estimated size of North Korea's entire economy. Still, the military is 50,000 troops short of the number of troops adequate for maintaining defence readiness, the ministry said. About 21,000 of the shortfall is in the non-commissioned officer ranks, it said. South Korea, one of the fastest-ageing societies in the world, recorded the lowest global fertility rate in 2024 at 0.75, representing the average number of children a woman is expected to have in her lifetime. Its population, which hit a peak of 51.8 million in 2020, is expected to shrink to 36.2 million by 2072, according to a government projection.
