Shahriman denies ‘blowing hot and cold' over collateral for Sapura tower

Shahriman Shamsuddin wants the High Court to wind up Sapura Holdings Sdn Bhd citing a breakdown of mutual trust with elder brother Shahril. KUALA LUMPUR : Sapura Holdings Sdn Bhd director Shahriman Shamsuddin today insisted he was not inconsistent as regards using the group's Sapura@Mines property as collateral to fund its business ventures. Testifying in his petition to wind up Sapura Holdings on grounds of a breakdown of mutual trust with elder brother Shahril, Shahriman said he had objected to using the property as collateral for the development of the group's flagship office tower. In his petition, Shahriman had claimed that his 'strained relationship' with Shahril had been 'exacerbated' by the differing opinions they voiced over Project Apex at a special board meeting of Sapura Resources Bhd (SRB) on Jan 31, 2023. Project Apex was the codename given by SRB for its joint venture with KLCC Holdings Sdn Bhd to develop Permata Sapura, a 52-storey office building in the KL city centre. Lawyer S Rabindra, representing Shahril, then referred Shahriman to the minutes of that meeting. Rabindra: At various board meetings and in relation to loan proposals that we've already gone through, you voiced strong concerns and protested the use of Sapura@Mines as collateral for Sapura Holdings' financial assistance, particularly for Permata. Correct? Shahriman: Yes, for Permata. Rabindra: Yet, at the board meeting on Jan 31, 2023, you were comfortable with Sapura Resources using Sapura@Mines as collateral for new projects. Is that correct? Shahriman: For other projects that were going to yield (returns). Rabindra: So there was a risk, according to you, that using Sapura@Mines as collateral for Permata could lead to a loss of the property, but here, you were quite happy to suggest using the same property for new ventures, despite the same risk. Correct? Shahriman: Not correct. Rabindra: But it is the same risk. There is still the possibility of losing the property. Shahriman: We know the negative risk of Permata. But there were other projects that we could have gone into. Rabindra: I suggest to you that you were blowing hot and cold with respect to the use of the Sapura@Mines property as collateral. Shahriman: I disagree. Shahriman also agreed that, in essence, he had wanted SRB to exit Project Apex, while Shahril wanted to remain in it. Rabindra: I'm suggesting to you that this was a difference of opinion between two directors of a public-listed company about what they see as being in the best interest of the company. Do you agree? Shahriman: Agree. That was a difference of opinion. Rabindra: And this was openly discussed at the Jan 31 board meeting. Correct? Shahriman: Yes. Rabindra: So it essentially came down to a commercial disagreement between two directors on a matter of business judgement based on what is best for SRB? Shahriman: On a matter of business judgement, a difference of opinion, yes. Sapura Holdings is the parent entity of over 40 subsidiaries valued at RM832 million, including the publicly-listed SRB. Both Shahril and Shahriman hold a 48% stake each in Sapura Holdings, with the remaining 4% owned by Rameli Musa. In the petition filed last September, Shahriman claims that an irreparable breakdown of mutual trust and confidence between him and Shahril necessitated the dissolution of Sapura Holdings. However, Sapura Holdings, Shahril and Rameli, all named as respondents, oppose the petition, contending that the company was never intended to be a family business and that dissolution would be neither just nor equitable. The hearing before Justice Leong Wai Hong continues.

Bursa rebounds to close higher on bargain-hunting

KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia picked up momentum in the final hour of trading to close marginally higher, driven by bargain-hunting in energy and telecommunications stocks during the late session, said an analyst. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said the local market mirrored the upbeat key regional bourses on speculation that the US and Chinese leaders may reconnect this week to restart trade negotiations. White House officials said President Donald Trump would speak with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, this week. As for the local bourse, Thong said lingering concerns over trade tensions and their impact on the global economy were causing investors to remain cautious. 'We are hopeful that the negotiations between the US and China will ease tensions and boost sentiment among local investors. 'For the moment, we maintain our weekly FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) target at between 1,490 and 1,520 pending the emergence of fresh catalysts,' Thong told Bernama. Meanwhile, UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Sedek Jantan said sentiment remained cautious following the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD) latest report, which downgraded its 2025 US gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast from 2.2% to 1.6%, citing policy uncertainty and the adverse impact of Trump's renewed tariff measures. This includes a proclamation doubling US tariffs on steel and aluminium to 50%, effective immediately, adding fresh pressure on global markets. Sedek said that despite the modest rebound in the benchmark index, broader market sentiment remained cautious. 'Trading activity was subdued, with total volume easing to 2.4 billion shares, down from 3 billion the previous day, signalling continued investor caution amid persistent global and domestic headwinds,' he said. At 5pm, the FBM KLCI rose 4.72 points, or 0.31%, to its intraday high of 1,507.97 from yesterday's close of 1,503.25. The index thus ended its six-day losing streak to end in positive territory. The benchmark index opened 3.85 points higher at 1,507.10 and thereafter slipped to a low of 1,501.11 in early trade, experiencing choppy trading in the afternoon session before trending upwards towards closing. Market breadth was, however, slightly negative as decliners outpaced gainers 494 to 442, while 450 counters were unchanged, 953 untraded and 18 suspended. Turnover slid to 2.40 billion units worth RM2.03 billion compared with yesterday's 3.04 billion units valued at RM2.20 billion. On the local bourse, heavyweights Petronas Dagangan jumped 96 sen to RM20.96, YTL Corporation perked up eight sen to RM1.88, and CelcomDigi rose 14 sen to RM3.92. YTL Power International and Maxis added nine sen each to RM3.29 and RM3.65, respectively. As for active stocks, TWL added 0.5 sen to 2.5 sen, Tanco eased 1.5 sen to 98.5 sen, Gamuda garnered seven sen to RM4.66, NationGate slid three sen to RM1.43, and XOX Networks slipped 0.5 sen to one sen. On the index board, the FBM Emas Index gained 28.62 points to 11,283.07, the FBMT 100 Index increased 30.22 points to 11,052.94, while the FBM ACE Index decreased 2.16 points to 4,479.65. The FBM Emas Shariah Index advanced 31.5 points to 11,241.65 and the FBM 70 Index added 26.83 points to 16,168.99. Sector-wise, the financial services index eased 4.78 points to 17,757.85, the plantation index declined 15.21 points to 7,203.67, while the industrial products and services index edged up 0.02 of-a-point to 150.1 and the energy index climbed 3.5 points to 702.46. The Main Market volume narrowed to 1.15 billion units valued at RM1.83 billion against yesterday's 1.21 billion units worth RM1.9 billion. Warrants turnover dwindled to 967.1 million units worth RM118.58 million from 1.5 billion units valued at RM201.92 million yesterday. Microsoft says to step up AI-powered European cybersecurity

Microsoft has accused Russia, China, Iran and North Korea of being behind the infiltration of European computer networks for espionage. (EPA Images pic) PARIS : US tech giant Microsoft said today that it would step up its cooperation with European governments against cyber threats, including by deploying AI-powered intelligence gathering. Its new European Security Programme 'puts AI at the centre of our work as a tool to protect traditional cybersecurity needs,' Microsoft vice chairman Brad Smith wrote in a blog post. Aiming to deliver real-time intelligence about cyber threats to governments, the scheme will extend to the '27 EU member states, as well as EU accession countries, members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), the UK, Monaco, and the Vatican,' he added. Microsoft accused the governments of Russia, China, Iran and North Korea of being behind the infiltration of European computer networks for espionage and other purposes. Meanwhile, cybercriminals are expanding attacks using tools such as ransomware, which encrypts data on victims' computers and demands they fork over cash to unlock it again. 'We see 600 million attacks on our customers every single day,' Smith told reporters in a briefing ahead of the blog post's release, calling cyber defence a 'multi-billion-dollar expense for customers across Europe'. 'AI systems can help detect and identify new forms of attack,' Smith wrote in his blog post. However, Microsoft has seen malicious actors using the technology for everything from researching targets to writing code and 'social engineering' – or convincing human employees to facilitate access by hackers. ''Influence operations' by nation-states are increasingly using AI to mislead and deceive, including with convincing 'deepfake' images, audio and video,' Smith added. The company itself 'tracks any malicious use of new AI models we release and proactively prevents known threat actors from using them,' he wrote. Microsoft last month helped police across Europe take down large swathes of digital infrastructure supporting an 'infostealing' network, Lumma, that had been gathering sensitive information like passwords and crypto wallets from victims' devices. In future, members of the company's digital crimes unit will be embedded with Europol's cybercrime specialists in The Hague, Smith wrote, part of a broader increase in collaboration with European security forces. Microsoft's cybersecurity effort is part of a wider push to increase its operations in Europe. The drive comes as trade tensions simmer between the EU and the Trump administration in the US, with many voices questioning European firms' strategic dependence on American-made technology.
