GIMENEZ SCORES IN MEXICO FRIENDLY

GIMENEZ SCORES IN MEXICO FRIENDLY

Yahoo4 hours ago

It was a busy evening of international football for the Rossoneri. Reijnders, Pavlović and Jović played in World Cup qualification, Gimenez featured in Mexico's friendly against Switzerland, while Walker was on the bench for England. Tijjani Reijnders started in the Netherlands' 2-0 victory at home to Finland in 2026 World Cup qualifying. The Rossoneri's centre-midfielder was booked in the 61st minute and then subbed off eight minutes later for Weghorst. Tijjani put in a measured performance: tidy in possession but less impactful in the final third than usual.
Albania and Serbia played out a goalless draw, with two Rossoneri on the pitch for the away side. Strahinja Pavlović played the full 90 minutes and picked up a yellow card in the 17th minute. The Milan centre-back was his usual physical self and limited Albania's forwards. Luka Jović came on for Mitrović in the 76th minute: he didn't have many touches but test Strakosha late in the day.

Mexico lost 4-2 to Switzerland in Salt Lake City, USA. Santiago Gimenez scored for El Tri. El Bebote, who had threatened in the first half, capitalised on a mistake by the defenders and turned it home to make it 1-1 at the start of the second half. The Mexico number 9 played very well: constantly on the move, getting in behind and clinical in front of goal.

Frenkie de Jong expects to sign new Barcelona contract: ‘They want it and I want it'

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong says he expects to sign a new contract with the La Liga champions. The Athletic reported in March that the Netherlands international was in talks with Barcelona over a new deal, with his current terms set to expire in a year. 'I think I will sign a new contract, but you can never say that with a hundred per cent certainty. If everything goes well, then it will happen,' De Jong told Dutch outlet Voetbalzone while on duty with his country. 'They want it and I want it, so normally you can work it out.' Advertisement De Jong made 46 appearances for Barcelona in the 2024-25 season as his side claimed La Liga and Copa del Rey titles, while also reaching the Champions League semi-final, where they suffered a 7-6 aggregate defeat by Inter. Negotiations over a new deal between Barcelona and De Jong's camp began in March, after the club sent a proposal to extend his terms at the start of 2024, but club sources — who asked to remain anonymous to protect relationships — said they did not receive a response at the time. Barcelona signed De Jong from Ajax for £86million ($116.4m) in 2019 and established his position in their midfield immediately. However, as one of the highest earners in the squad, the 28-year-old's contract became a problem for the Catalan club during a period of financial turmoil, club sources added. Manchester United agreed to pay Barcelona a guaranteed fee of €75million (£63million, $75million) for De Jong in the summer of 2022, as reported by The Athletic, but the transfer did not materialise. De Jong later criticised Catalan media for the reporting of his situation at the club, dismissing suggestions he was earning '€40million' and said they 'made up a story'. An ankle injury suffered in April 2024 sidelined De Jong for over six months, and speaking upon his return last year, the midfielder said he wondered 'whether I would ever fully recover'. 'There was uncertainty about how long it would take and whether my ankle would be completely the same as it was before,' De Jong said at the time. The Dutchman has made 259 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 19 goals and assisting 23. ()

Milan meet with Mile Svilar's entourage

Milan are serious in their pursuit of Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar. With Mike Maignan nearing a move to Chelsea, Milan have reportedly shifted their focus on Svilar who is in talks to extend his contract with Roma. Advertisement However, negotiations with Roma have suffered a setback as the Giallorossi's proposal was considered low by the player and his agents. Italian journalist Nicolo Schira reports that Milan director Igli Tare met with Svilar's entourage a few days ago. The Rossoneri are prepared to submit him a contract proposal of 3.3 million euros per year until 2030. Roma must accelerate in their talks if they want to secure the player's long-term future.

We got away with it – Harry Kane admits England lacked quality in Andorra win

England captain Harry Kane admits Thomas Tuchel's side 'got away with it' having put in a sloppy display in Saturday's drab encounter with minnows Andorra. After starting World Cup qualification, and the German's reign, with Wembley wins against Albania and Latvia, things fell flat against the 173rd-best team in the world in Barcelona. Advertisement England were booed by many of the 6,950 travelling fans after a scoreless first half against Andorra, with further jeers greeting the final whistle after Tuchel's men failed to kick on from Kane's 50th-minute goal. The candid head coach felt the Euro 2024 runners-up 'played with fire' due to their lack of 'seriousness and urgency', with the skipper sharing similar sentiments. 'It wasn't our greatest performance,' Kane said. 'I don't think it's one many people are going to remember, that's for sure, but it's three points in the bag. 'But, yeah, for sure we know we can play better in all aspects, both with and without the ball. Advertisement 'It's down to us now to go analyse it, look back and try and learn from it because condition-wise it's going to be very similar to next summer – dry pitch, warm weather, humid. 'We were just lacking quality, looked a bit fatigued both physically and mentally and, yeah, we got away with it because we're a good team and they had a couple of half-chances there where we didn't get punished. But ultimately, it wasn't good enough.' Harry Kane hailed Noni Madueke's 'individual quality' after the Chelsea winger set up his goal against Andorra (Bradley Collyer/PA) Kane has scored in all three matches under Tuchel, his former manager at Bayern Munich, with the latest effort extending England's all-time top scorer's record goal haul to 72. Advertisement Noni Madueke capped a man-of-the-match display by providing the cross for the winner and the captain felt this kind of match cried out for the directness of a talent like the Chelsea winger. 'He was really good today,' Kane said as attention turns to Tuesday's friendly against Senegal. 'I think in these type of games, you need players like Noni who are good one-v-one to sometimes make a difference. 'It's a dry pitch, not easy to move the ball quickly, so sometimes you rely on individual quality and I thought he was probably our best outlet today. Harry Kane's goal was enough to seal a low-key win over Andorra (Bradley Collyer/PA) 'The goal itself was probably our best move of the game in terms of how we wanted to play, more in terms of Curt (Jones) getting on it and playing the forward pass to me, and then obviously the rebound and back across. 'It was probably our best move and we just didn't have enough of that, both with probably the runs and also the quality – a lot of balls kind of overhit, out of play, and it just kind of killed our momentum, especially there in the second half.'
