Akola Medico Cheats Death At Ahmedabad Plane Crash Site

Akola: An Akola medico, Aishwarya Toshniwal, 30, had a brush with death when the Air India flight crashed into the BJ Medical College hospital mess, metres away from her hostel on Thursday afternoon.
Jolted by the explosion, Aishwarya, a second-year oncopathology student at Gujarat Cancer Research Institute Medical College, which shares the campus with the civil hospital, watched with horror leaping flames and smouldering debris from the fifth floor window of her hostel building. The plane had nose-dived into the diagonally opposite building and smoke and fire were spreading and wreckage tossed into the air.
Wrapping herself with a blanket, she suffered burns while navigating her way to the ground through the dark, smoke-filled stairways and corridors.
"This will stay with me for the rest of my life. I've never been so close to death," said Aishwarya, still recovering from the trauma. "For a moment, I thought it was all over," she later told her father, Amol Toshniwal, who runs a cloth store in Akola's Durga Chowk. Instead of panicking, Aishwarya, who was well-versed with every nook and corner of the building, mustered the courage to walk down in pitch darkness, breathless and choking.

Soon after, Aishwarya called her father. "Papa, there has been a tragedy. A plane crashed into our campus," she cried on the phone. Stunned and shaken, Amol shut his shop and rushed home. The family immediately tuned into the news and were horrified by the scale of the crash.
"It was nothing but God's grace," Amol said with tears in his eyes. "She had just returned to Ahmedabad a day ago after celebrating her grandfather's birthday in Akola.
Who could have imagined such a thing," he added.
Aishwarya's mother, Madhuri, as well as her grandparents were in tears on hearing her voice. Her grandfather said, "She came to meet me on my birthday and faced near-death the very next day. We are thankful to God she is still alive." The Toshniwals expressed condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the tragedy.

1 2 Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has resumed a massive drive to remove water hyacinth which has swamped nearly one-thirds of the Ambazar lake as part of its flood-prevention measure and have deployed poclain machines and other equipment. With the civic elections scheduled to be held later this year, flooding could become a major poll issue, especially when memories of the September 23, 2023, floods are still fresh. In case there is a repeat of 9/23 disaster and city areas get inundated, it will hand down a potential ammunition to those aspiring to contest the impending NMC polls to go ballistic against the civic administration and the BJP-ruled state govt. The citizens affected by the 9/23 flood are already unhappy with the slow pace of works like construction of retaining wall along the Nag River. While the officials say the renewed efforts to remove the hyacinth are part of its pre-monsoon preparedness, there could be a political push too to get the drive completed before peak monsoon, said sources. Officials say the thick growth of hyacinth at the overflow point hindered the smooth discharge of water into downstream drains and the Nag River, leading to backflow and urban flooding, especially during the last monsoon. While the NMC has been periodically removing the weed, experts say the root cause needs long-term scientific intervention. The civic body also sought assistance from the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (Neeri) to study and control the hyacinth problem. According to officials, water hyacinth — commonly mistaken for water lilies — covered nearly one-third of Ambazari Lake just a few days ago. However, with intensified efforts, tonnes of the invasive aquatic plant are now being extracted daily. The floating mats of hyacinth became a major concern, especially after recent rains, when they were seen drifting into the Nag River and clogging the flow of stormwater. Kochi: As rain swept through the narrow lanes of Fort Kochi on Saturday night, 30 women cycled through the drizzle, their spirits undampened by the drizzle. The Freedom Night Ride, organized by SheCycling, was more than just a ride — it was a statement of visibility and freedom in public spaces, especially after dark. The participants, aged between 15 and 70, gathered at the iconic St Francis Church before pedalling through the city's historic bylanes and colonial charm. For many, it was not just a ride, but a personal journey toward confidence and independence. Among them was 58-year-old Tanuja Aziz, who recently learned to cycle. Drenched but beaming, she shared how cycling transformed her life. "I never imagined going alone to the market or shops. Now I do it regularly," she said.
