Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound Is a Forgettable Chapter in the Series' Legacy

It looks like 2025 is the "Year of the Ninja." Assassin's Creed: Shadows was one of the big hits of the year's first half, a new Shinobi game is on the way, and Ninja Gaiden fans are being treated to a full trilogy: Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, released in January, Ninja Gaiden 4, arriving later this year and Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, arriving Thursday. However, based on my experience, you might want to skip this installment: It's charming but far from satisfying.
Ninja Gaiden Ragebound is a 2D side-scrolling action game that pays tribute to the original NES Ninja Gaiden trilogy. While the retro graphics are appealing, the gameplay lacks meaningful depth. It feels like a concept-first project where ninjas were added after the fact, with the Ninja Gaiden name slapped on to sell it.
Interestingly, Ragebound acts as a side-story to the original NES title. Ryu Hayabusa learns of his father's death in America and leaves his village, setting up the events of the first game. In his absence, fellow ninja Kenji Muzo stays behind to protect the village. Soon after, a demon army invades. Meanwhile, Kumori, a ninja from the rival Black Spider clan, finds her home base under siege as well. Captured, Kumori tells Kenji to use a mystical dagger to bind her spirit to him.
This dual-character mechanic is Ragebound's central hook. Players control Kenji, who uses a sword, while Kumori aids in spirit form by throwing shurikens. Occasionally, she can take physical form to reach areas Kenji can't access. As the duo progresses, they unlock a powerful screen-clearing magic attack.
As clever as that sounds, it falls flat in execution. Kenji's sword is his only consistent weapon, and Kumori's shurikens are tied to a meter that only fills when Kenji lands hits. At full charge, you might get a dozen throws before it empties again. There's a jump-based guillotine attack that feels vaguely Sonic the Hedgehog-like, bouncing off enemies, but it's mostly used for platforming rather than combat. The moveset is shallow, as are the level designs.

Dotemu
Stages feel repetitive, filled with endless waves of weak enemies that die in one hit. Occasionally, one drops a power-up that lets you instantly kill a larger foe, but these moments don't change the core loop that repeats again and again until you reach a boss.
To the game's credit, boss fights are a highlight. Each has distinct patterns and grows more complex in its second phase. These encounters forced me to be more tactical with dodges and attacks, and a few required multiple attempts due to overcommitting or mistiming. But these fights are the only part of Ragebound that feels like it was designed with care.
The regular enemies are mindless and mostly exist to knock you into pits, which cause instant death. Otherwise, they're laughably easy. With healing talismans and generous checkpoint placement, it's difficult to actually die. In fact, with Kenji's dodge ability, you can run past most of the level without engaging. You'll be healed at the next checkpoint anyway.
Levels are set in various regions of Japan, and while one stage on a building under construction offers a bit of variety, most environments lack creativity or challenge.
The difficulty is also a huge departure from Ninja Gaiden's legacy. The original NES games were notoriously punishing, and the Xbox reboots were even harder. Here, the default difficulty feels like "baby mode." You can tweak settings to remove healing items or increase enemy damage, but that's about it.
The action gets frantic in Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound.
Dotemu
The 2D pixel art is from developer The Game Kitchen, known for the Blasphemous series. The style echoes the NES and SNES era nicely, but the charm fades fast. Unlike Blasphemous, which featured unique enemy designs and animations that oozed personality, Ragebound's enemies feel lazy. They just run toward you, then pop like water balloons when defeated.
With only six to eight hours of gameplay at a price tag of $25, I cannot recommend Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound. It lacks anything of interest other than this side story to the original Ninja Gaiden game, and even then, it's just introducing different ninjas that are fighting monsters. This game was supposed to be a love letter to the original trilogy, but instead, it's more like a bad photocopy of a love letter made by someone who didn't seem to care that much.
Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is available for PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles.

He was larger-than-life — a hero in red and yellow who body-slammed his way into American pop culture. But now, Hulk Hogan has taken his final bow. News of the wrestling legend's passing shocked the world in late July, inspiring an outpouring of reactions and tributes, even one from the president of the United States. To honor the titan of the ring, Fox Nation has unveiled a brand-new special capturing the heart and history of Hulk Hogan's legacy. "He was a broad character with broad appeal, played by a big man who loved this country," "Fox & Friends" co-host Brian Kilmeade said. "His story is heroic and complicated and full of surprises, and we have a great cast of characters assembled here to tell that story." Kilmeade hosts the half-hour-long special that debuted on the streaming platform on Thursday. The story begins with Terry Bollea – Hogan's birth name – playing a bass guitar in his youth. His size and musculature caught attention beyond the music, however, and with a body built for the sport, he was drawn to wrestling early. "He grew up as a wrestling fan. He would sit in the second row… and watch Dusty Rhodes and Superstar Billy Graham. Those were his heroes," said Dave Meltzer, a wrestling journalist whose career dates back to the '70s. Meltzer is one of many personalities featured in "The Life of Hulk Hogan" special. He shared his own reflections on Hogan's life and career, his memories beginning decades ago. As the special explores, coming up in the 1970s worked to Hogan's advantage. The local nature of wrestling at the time made him a "big fish" in a small pond right away. Meltzer had never seen anyone like Hogan. Despite standing tall at 6'7" and weighing in at over 300 pounds, he was still "green" in the sport, but Meltzer knew right away he was destined to become a "big star." It wasn't long before he captured the attention of wrestling icon Vince McMahon, Sr., who was the promoter of the New York territory of the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), which would later become the World Wrestling Foundation (WWF) then World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). McMahon needed a popular hook to promote the up-and-coming Hogan, so he borrowed from a popular TV series at the time. Thus, the idea of the big, blonde all-American hero "Hulk Hogan" was born, and, at the backdrop of the Cold War and Reagan's "Morning in America" messaging, the timing couldn't have been better. Hogan went on to the cinema, facing off against Sylvester Stallone's Rocky Balboa in "Rocky III." He became the face of McMahon's company as it went national, a pop culture icon and an "America First" patriot. The special documents Hogan's tie-in to President Donald Trump decades before he assumed office, the rise of "sports entertainment," and Hogan's role in Trump's 2024 campaign. "He was the biggest name in the WWF and then the WWE… of all time," Fox News contributor Joe Concha said while appearing in the installment. "You will never match Hulk Hogan, Hulkamania and that whole movement," he added. Hogan died in Florida on July 24 after suffering a heart attack. He was 71-years-old. Did you pull six cards in Pokémon TCG Pocket? Here's why

I play Pokémon TCG Pocket every day, and I have since it launched. With somewhere north of 6,000 cards in my collection, it's my most-played mobile game to date — so when I pulled six cards instead of five, it blew my mind. After opening hundreds of packs, I only expected five cards. The sight of a sixth one had me Googling whether it was a bug or something I'd missed. As it turns out, the most recent update (the addition of the Wisdom of Sea and Sky packs) added a slight possibility that players could pull six cards instead. It's like a regular pack plus one card, and that last pull often contains a baby Pokémon like Pichu, Cleffa, or Elekid. The feature is a nod to Pokémon Gold and Silver, just like the pack itself. With Ho-Oh and Lugia as the respective legendaries of the two games, it's no real surprise they make an appearance as the card art — but Gold and Silver also introduced the idea of 'baby' Pokémon, pre-evolutions to existing favorites. Recommended Videos When you draw a sixth Pokémon card, the animation is slightly different, but it took a couple of times before I actually noticed the tweaks. The change is subtle, so you might not realize it until you're staring down at six cards in total. Players have roughly an 8.33% chance to pull a sixth card out of a normal pack. Each of the two packs offers a different set of Pokémon, with the Ho-Oh set offering Magby, Smoochum, and Tyrogue, while the Lugia set offers Pichi, Elekid, and Cleffa. So far, it seems like the six-card draws are the only way to organically obtain a baby Pokémon (not counting Togepi, which can appear in any set). That means the actual chance of drawing some of these cards, like the coveted 1-star Pichu, is close to 1%. If you want to get your hands on them, you'll need to play regularly and take advantage of hourglass draws, too. The good news is that the dev team just awarded players an extra 10,000 Trade Tokens, and you can exchange 60 of these for 60 Pack Hourglasses. You can also exchange 100 Trade Tokens for 1,000 Shinedust for trading with other players, so it's slightly easier to get your hands on the cards you're missing. All in all, you have around a 29% chance to pull a baby Pokémon as your sixth card. Aside from the adorable card art, these picks offer something else, too: the potential for a free ability. While their attacks don't inflict damage, they do give you an edge. For instance, Cleffa can use Twinkly Call to put a random 'mon in your hand, while Magby can use Toasty Toss to attach a fire energy from to a Pokémon on the bench. All of the baby Pokémon only have 30 HP, so they're vulnerable to even weak attacks. They aren't currently able to evolve into higher-stage Pokémon, either, so playing them is a bit of a risk. These are great for early-game rushes, but you need a strategy in place to get them off the field once they've served their purpose. That holds especially true in Pokémon TCG Pocket with its much faster-paced gameplay. This update feels like one of the best ones yet, and while it isn't confirmed, the chance to pull better cards feels slightly higher compared to earlier sets. It's a good time to be a Pokémon fan, especially with Pokémon Legends: Z-A launching soon and Pokémon Champions just around the corner.
