Govt taps Bilawal to engage PTI on security talks

Express Tribune26-03-2025

A day after it was urged to reconvene the top-level security huddle, the federal government on Tuesday tasked Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari with engaging the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), accepting his offer to mediate between the ruling coalition and the opposition.
Speaking on a private TV channel, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's advisor and senior PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah said the government was open to reconvening the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) if Bilawal brought PTI to the table.
"Bilawal Bhutto is already part of the government. If he successfully mediates between PTI and the government and the negotiations yield positive results, it will be a significant success for us," the PM's advisor said.
Though Sanaullah referred to Bilawal as part of the government, it is pertinent to note that the PPP chairman has consistently maintained that while his party supports the PML-N-led government and sits on treasury benches, it is not part of the federal cabinet.
The government's move follows Bilawal's call for a united front against terrorism and his concerns over the absence of key political parties, particularly PTI, from the recently held high-level security meeting.
Addressing PPP workers at the Punjab Governor's House on Monday, he urged the prime minister to reconvene the PCNS session with full political representation, stressing that Pakistan's security challenges required collective responsibility.
While pushing for broader participation, Bilawal also slammed opposition parties for prioritising political disputes over national security.
Directly addressing Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan, he urged PTI to set aside internal grievances and focus on pressing national issues, including terrorism, economic instability and governance failures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
He stressed that national security should not be held hostage to PTI's singular demand for releasing its supremo Imran Khan. He warned that Pakistan's internal divisions were being exploited by external forces and stressed the need for national unity.
Positioning PPP as a bridge between the government and the opposition, Bilawal argued that his party's unique stance – neither fully in government nor opposition – allowed it to facilitate dialogue and work toward resolving key national challenges.
On March 18, the PCNS had approved a unanimous declaration, reaffirming Pakistan's unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorism in all its forms and vowed decisive action against any elements threatening national stability.
The country's top civil and military leadership had reaffirmed its commitment in the first security meeting in parliament during the incumbent PML-N-led coalition government, which was boycotted by the key opposition party, PTI, among others.
The committee had reiterated that no institution, individual or group acting in collusion with hostile forces will be allowed to undermine Pakistan's peace and stability. Expressing regret over the absence of some opposition members, an official statement had said, the committee reaffirmed that consultations on this matter will continue.
During the in-camera session, the military leadership had provided a detailed briefing on the prevailing security situation, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The meeting was informed about ongoing counterterrorism operations, recent threats and the state's comprehensive strategy to ensure internal security.
The meeting of the PCNS was called after security concerns escalated following a string of attacks, particularly in Balochistan, where militants recently hijacked a passenger train and carried out a suicide bombing on a security convoy.
Earlier, terrorists had attacked on Bannu Cantonment in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where 16 terrorists were killed and five soldiers were martyred.
Also, Maulana Hamidul Haq Haqqani - the son of Maulana Samiul Haq and chief of his own faction of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-S) - was among six people who perished in a recent suicide attack at the Darul Uloom Haqqani in Nowshera district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

India's attempt aimed at creating ‘new normal' highlighted

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan's high-level diplomatic delegation in the United States has warned that India's attempts to create a 'new normal' that implied arbitrary and unilateral strikes could lead to disastrous consequences in South Asia's nuclear environment and must be firmly resisted by the international community. A high-level Parliamentary delegation, led by Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, has reached Washington DC after concluding a two-day visit to the United Nations Headquarters in New York, said Foreign Office (FO) Spokesperson Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan on Wednesday in a statement. The delegation met with the UN Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly, the President of the Security Council, representatives of the Security Council's Permanent and Non-Permanent Members, ambassadors of the OIC Group, representatives of the media, civil society, and think tanks, and the Pakistani community. Bilawal urges UN to press India for comprehensive dialogue The visit was part of Pakistan's international outreach to present its perspective on the escalating regional tensions and threat to international peace and security, emanating from India's irresponsible behaviour, unprovoked aggression against Pakistan, belligerent rhetoric, and its unlawful unilateral decision to hold into abeyance the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) - a lifeline for over 240 million Pakistanis. The delegation carried Pakistan's core message of 'Peace with Responsibility.' In these engagements, the delegation drew attention to India's illegal use of force and violations of international law, including the UN Charter and International Humanitarian Law, particularly targeting of civilian areas and killing of innocent civilians, including women and children. The delegation rejected India's baseless allegations regarding the 22 April terrorist attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir without a shred of evidence, and warned against India's weaponisation of water through its unilateral hold on the IWT in violation of international law and treaty obligations. Reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to combating terrorism in all forms and manifestations, the delegation highlighted Pakistan's crucial role and sacrifices in the success of the global counter-terrorism efforts, while also drawing attention of the international community towards India-sponsored terrorism in Pakistan, and its transnational assassination campaign. Cooperation, not politicisation, was required to effectively combat the menace of terrorism, it was underlined. The delegation emphasised Pakistan's responsible, restrained and lawful response to Indian aggression and provocations, underlining that Pakistan seeks peace but will always defend its sovereignty with resolve. The delegation reiterated that durable peace in South Asia hinges on a just and peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, in line with UN Security Council resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people. The international community was urged to uphold international law and the sanctity of treaties, push for the revival and normal functioning of the IWT, and support the initiation of a comprehensive dialogue to resolve all outstanding issues between India and Pakistan, including the core dispute of Jammu and Kashmir. The delegation concluded with a clear message: Pakistan desires peaceful, cooperative relations with all its neighbours based on equality and mutual respect - but will not accept aggression, impunity, or violation of international norms. The delegation comprised the following members: Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr Musadik Masood Malik; Chairperson, Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination and former Minister for Information and Climate Change, Senator Sherry Rehman; Chairperson, National Assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and former Foreign Minister, Hina Rabbani Khar; former Minister for Commerce, Defence and Foreign Affairs, Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan; former Minister for Maritime Affairs, Senator Syed Faisal Ali Subzwari; Senator Bushra Anjum Butt; former Foreign Secretary and Caretaker Foreign Minister, Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani (retired); and former Foreign Secretary, Ambassador Tehmina Janjua (retired). PTI's rigging claims baseless, shameful: Azma

LAHORE: Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari has said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)'s claim of election rigging after suffering a clear defeat by 39,000 votes is extremely shameful and tantamount to denying reality. She stated that according to the FAFEN report, 116 polling agents expressed satisfaction with the electoral process. She added that the people of Sambrial have out rightly rejected and cast away the anti-state narrative of the PTI founder. She said that the people of Punjab now vote for and strongly support Maryam Nawaz's politics of public service, as the Pakistan Muslim League (N) is the only party with a genuine vision for development, stability, and public welfare. Responding to PTI leader Waqas Akram's press conference, Azma Bokhari stated that PTI faced a humiliating defeat in the Sambrial by-election. As per FAFEN's report, presiding officers duly provided Form 45 to polling agents, and out of 121 interviews conducted, 116 polling agents confirmed their satisfaction with the voting process. She noted that the vote share of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) in Sambrial increased from 41% to 59%, while PTI's vote share dropped from 35% to 29%. These statistics are enough to open the eyes of so-called intellectuals and analysts who continue to push PTI's narrative, she said, adding: 'Blaming the police and district administration instead of accepting defeat is a long-standing habit of PTI.' She reiterated that the people of Sambrial have firmly rejected the founder of PTI's anti-state rhetoric. The people of Punjab now vote for Maryam Nawaz's politics of service and continue to support it. This seat has always belonged to the PML(N), and it will remain unbeatable in the future as well, she added. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Pakistan wants to resolve issues with India: Bilawal

Former Foreign Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said Pakistan wants to resolve all outstanding disputes with India. Talking to journalists at Pakistan's consulate in New York, Bilawal said all stakeholders will suffer during a war between Pakistan and India. "Who requested for ceasefire after a war broke out between Pakistan and India, Indian politicians should ask this question from Modi," said the former FM. Bilawal said either US President Donald Trump or Modi is telling a lie, adding, "We want to tell the world that Modi is lying." He said Pakistan will continue its support for Palestine on political and diplomatic fronts. "Our delegation talked in detail with the UN secretary general and he was very receptive," said Bilawal. The PPP chairman said Pakistan will force India morally to refrain from stopping the flow of water. If India stops water for five days, the crops will be destroyed, said Bilawal, adding stopping water is not permissible in any law of the world.
