AMPANG JAYA: An unemployed man has been arrested for damaging a Hindu temple in Taman Sri Ampang here.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said police received a report on the incident today.
"The complainant, a 34-year-old man who is the temple committee secretary, claimed that he saw CCTV footage of an unknown man entering the temple and leaving shortly after about 6am.
"At 8.29am, the complainant saw the same individual entering the temple carrying a hammer, a metal cutter, two machetes and a keris."
He said the suspect allegedly damaged a trishula, a three-pronged weapon with significant symbolism in Hinduism.
He said the complainant claimed he rushed to the temple, but was chased away by the suspect, who brandished a machete and allegedly threatened to decapitate him.
"The complainant called the police for assistance. A police patrol arrived at 8.38am and arrested the suspect.
"The suspect has been identified as a 33-year-old unemployed man who has no prior record."
He said the suspect tested positive for methamphetamines and amphetamines.
He said police seized a hammer, a bolt cutter, a bag, two machetes, a keris and a motorcycle.
"The suspect is believed to have been high at the time of the incident. He claims he heard voices.
"The suspect is expected to be produced at the Ampang Jaya magistrate's court tomorrow to obtain a remand order.
"We have opened investigations under Section 295 and Section 506 of the Penal Code for destroying, damaging or defiling places of worship or sacred objects with the intent to insult a religious group and criminal intimidation."
Under Section 295 of the code, offenders face up to two years in jail or a fine or both. Under Section 506 of the code, offenders face up to seven years in jail or a fine or both.
Azam said police were also investigating the case under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive, Explosive Subtances and Dangerous Weapons Act, which carries up to two years in jail upon conviction.

TAWAU: Five foreigners who rammed a police roadblock while attempting to flee at the Megah Industrial Zone at 8pm were arrested after a 45km high-speed chase last Wednesday. District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspects, aged between 29 and 43, included the male driver, two male passengers, and two female passengers. 'The vehicle was ordered to stop by a team from the Police Patrol Car Unit (MPV) and Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB), who were conducting a roadblock operation. 'However, the driver defied police instructions and attempted to escape by crashing through the checkpoint, prompting our officers to pursue them,' he said. The chase continued through several main roads including Jalan Timur, Kem Pengakap Tiku, Jalan Bunga Raya, Jalan Chong Thien Vun, and Jalan Apas, before it was eventually stopped at Batu 12, Jalan Apas. Upon inspection, police found none of the occupants, including the driver, could produce any identification. The driver did not possess a valid driving licence or road tax. The case is being investigated under Section 26(2) of the Police Act 1967 for fleeing a police checkpoint and Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their duties. Investigations are also being carried out under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for unlawful entry and stay in the country without valid identification or travel documents. The driver is also being investigated under Section 26 and Section 23 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving without a valid licence and road tax. Retiree loses RM108,000 to phone scammers
TANGKAK: A 58-year-old retiree lost about RM108,000 of her savings after receiving a call from scammers impersonating as officers from government agencies. Tangkak OCPD Supt Roslan Mohd Talib said the woman was contacted by individuals claiming to be from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the police. 'The suspects accused her of being involved in suspicious investment and loan activities, and she started to panic. 'The suspects manipulated the victim into believing she was being audited. Out of fear, she followed the instructions given, including transferring money into an account supposedly for audit purposes,' he said here yesterday. The victim ended up making 16 transactions from her account to two bank accounts, believed to be mule accounts. 'She only realised she had been cheated after suffering losses totalling RM108,520. She lodged a police report on Sunday,' said Supt Roslan. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Supt Roslan warned the public not to fall for phone scams, particularly those involving callers posing as enforcement officers or government servants. 'We advise the public to verify suspicious calls before taking any action. Be cautious and always get the latest updates on scams through official platforms like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok pages of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department,' he said. Supt Roslan urged anyone who believes they have been scammed to immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 for early intervention to block fund transfers.

Armed woman and dad-bashing son arrested
KOTA KINABALU: Police have arrested two individuals in separate violent incidents in Tawau, including a man who assaulted his father and a woman caught brandishing a machete while driving. In the first case, a 23-year-old man was detained for assaulting his father, leaving the older man, in his 60s, with serious facial injuries following a suspected misunderstanding at their home in Kampung Pitas, Bombalai. Tawau district police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said the incident occurred at 9.15pm on Sunday. 'Initial investigation revealed the son suddenly punched his father in the face and head. It is still unknown why the attack happened,' he said. The suspect, who lacked valid travel documents, attempted to flee during the arrest but was apprehended after a brief struggle. The man is currently being held for investigation under Sections 323 and 326A of the Penal Code. Earlier the same day, police arrested a 39-year-old woman who caused alarm by driving while wielding a machete. In the 5pm incident, the woman was driving slowly and screaming at bystanders in front of a business premises while brandishing the weapon. Policemen on patrol responded swiftly, stopping the vehicle and seizing the machete. A further search of the vehicle uncovered an axe, said ACP Jasmin. The woman was taken to the police station for further investigation, he said, adding that police are investigating the case under criminal intimidation and are still working to determine her motive.
