Union Agriculture Minister Shivaraja Singh Chouhan on Sunday urged all states and union territories to take immediate and stringent action against the sale of counterfeit and substandard fertilisers In a letter to the chief ministers, Chouhan asked them to regularly monitor fertiliser production and sales, besides conducting sampling and testing of counterfeit and substandard products."Forced tagging of nano-fertilisers or bio-stimulant products, along with conventional fertilisers, should be stopped immediately," he said.Strict legal action, including cancellation of licenses and registration of FIRs, should be taken against culprits, and effective prosecution must be ensured to secure a conviction, he added.States have been directed to develop feedback and information systems to involve farmers and farmer groups in the monitoring process and make special efforts to educate farmers on identifying genuine and counterfeit products.The minister urged all states to launch a statewide campaign in accordance with the above directions to eliminate the problem of fake and substandard agricultural inputs from its roots.He further stated that regular monitoring of this work at the state level would lead to an effective and sustainable solution in the interest of farmers.Chouhan emphasised the need to provide quality fertilisers at the right time, at affordable prices, and of standard quality, as agriculture is the backbone of India's economy."This letter has been issued with the objective of curbing the sale of fake fertilisers, black marketing of subsidised fertilisers, and illegal activities, such as forced tagging across the country," according to an official statement.The Union Minister also highlighted that the sale of counterfeit or substandard fertilisers is prohibited under the Fertiliser (Control) Order, 1985, which falls under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.

Brinda Karat voices concern against Chhattisgarh's approval for mining in Hasdeo region
In a letter to Union Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav, senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat has opposed a recent Chhattisgarh government's approval of diversion of a large forested land in the Hasdeo region of the State for mining purposes. In her letter, the former MP and Special Invitee, CPI(M) Central Committee, wrote there was no public interest involved in the project and it would only lead to exploitation of mineral resources for private gain. A recommendation letter dated June 26, in which the Forest department has approved the proposal for diversion of forest land for non-forestry purpose — coal excavation work in the Kete Extension Coal Block Open Mine Project of the Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam or RNUVL, surfaced online on August 4. In the letter uploaded on government's PARIVESH website, Forest department official from Surguja district Abhishek Jogawat has based the recommendation on a survey done by him. The approval has also faced criticism from the Opposition Congress and environmentalists in the State. Demanding its cancellation, they have accused the ruling BJP of sacrificing the interests of the people of State as well as ecological concerns for the benefit of their capitalist friends, specifically the Adani conglomerate that is the mine developer and operator for RVUNL. Echoing similar concerns, Ms. Karat in her August 6 letter sought Mr. Yadav's intervention to 'reverse the destructive decision of the Chhattisgarh Forest department to give the green signal for the operationalisation of the Kente Extension Coal Project which requires the destruction of 1,742 hectares of dense forest land.' The approval follows the so-called inspection of the site by the Surguja District Forest Officer in June this year, she added. Ms. Karat further wrote that these projects were being taken up ignoring the opinions of the gram sabhas involved and the provisions of the Constitution and legal frameworks that made consent of the gram sabhas mandatory. 'Open cast mining affects a very large geographical area beyond the actual project. So even though human habitation in this specific area is negligible, many villages outside the area will be deeply affected. Earlier, more than 1,500 written objections from local communities were given to the government. But these have been ignored,' she wrote.

1,240 National Highway Projects Worth Rs 7.8 Lakh Crore Underway: Nitin Gadkari
New Delhi: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said 1,240 national highways projects in 29,406 km, costing Rs 7.80 lakh crore, are currently under construction in the country, of which 15,674 km have been completed. These projects are under various stages of construction and are scheduled for completion in a phased manner by the financial year 2028-29, Gadkari said in a written reply to Rajya Sabha. The ministry of road transport and highways is primarily responsible for the development and maintenance of National Highways (NHs) and Expressways. Responding to a separate question, the minister said that during the current Financial Year 2025-26, the government has prepared the annual plan for the development of about 19,555 km of NHs, including about 548 km in the State of West Bengal. He also said a total of 4,557 electric vehicle Public Charging Stations (PCSs) have been installed on the State/National Highways and Expressways in the country. The minister said the government has prioritised the maintenance of the existing national highways network and has evolved a mechanism to ensure maintenance and repair (M&R), including timely repair of potholes on all NHs, through accountable maintenance agencies. NHs' development projects are executed mainly in three modes-- Build-Operate and Transfer (BOT), Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) and Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC). Concession period, including maintenance for projects on Build-Operate and Transfer (BOT), is 15 to 20 years, and on Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) is generally 15 years. The Concessionaire is responsible for the maintenance of the respective NH stretches within the concession period of the project. Only in the case of EPC projects, the Defect Liability period (DLP) is 5 years for the bituminous pavement works and 10 years for concrete pavement works.

CM: TN has double digit growth of 11.19%
Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin said TN has become the fastest growing state in the country overcoming multiple challenges. Citing a Union ministry of statistics report, Stalin said on Wednesday that TN's economic growth rate has touched 11.19%, surging past the previous estimate of 9.69%. State has achieved the double digit growth rate after 14 years, he said after distributing appointment orders to youth recruited by state municipal administration department. "We have reached the milestone after crossing multiple hurdles and slander," Stalin said.
