Malta's PM reveals plans to recognize State of Palestine
Malta will formally recognize the State of Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced on Tuesday.
The decision comes just hours after a similar declaration by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and follows France's recent pledge to recognize Palestine ahead of the UN meeting. In a social media statement, Abela reaffirmed Malta's commitment to lasting peace in the Middle East.
The Maltese government has
faced
mounting internal pressure in recent months to take a clear stance on Palestinian statehood. In mid-July, the right-wing opposition publicly called for immediate recognition.
The Mediterranean island nation, a member of the European Union, has a longstanding history of supporting Palestinian rights and endorsing a two-state solution.
Prime Minister Abela initially revealed plans to recognize Palestine in May, indicating the move would take place during a UN conference scheduled for June. However, the conference was later postponed.
Malta now joins a growing number of European nations backing Palestinian statehood. Ireland, Norway, and Spain formally recognized Palestine as an independent state in May 2024.
The international momentum reflects increasing frustration with the ongoing conflict in Gaza and growing support for diplomatic efforts to establish a sovereign Palestinian state.

Israeli forces kill two in West Bank as Palestinian arrests top 18,000 since start of war - International
Israeli forces shot and killed two Palestinians on Monday during a raid in the town of Qabatiya, south of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank, according to Palestinian sources. The Israeli military also shelled an agricultural facility in the same town, which Palestinian fighters were reportedly using for cover, destroying the structure completely, sources told Al Jazeera. Elsewhere in the West Bank, three Palestinians—including a wounded teenager—were arrested after Israeli troops raided and searched their family homes south of Bethlehem. Seven other Palestinians were detained in Hebron following similar home raids, during which Israeli soldiers vandalized their properties. Israeli forces also carried out raids in Ramallah and several surrounding towns and villages. According to a report released on Sunday by the Palestinian Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, Israel has arrested around 18,500 Palestinians in the West Bank since it launched its genocidal war on Gaza on 7 October 2023. Israeli army and settler violence in the West Bank has sharply escalated since the start of the war, with increasingly deadly operations, particularly in the north. Refugee camps in Jenin and Tulkarem have been the focal point of a months-long military campaign launched by the Israeli army in January. The offensive has killed dozens, demolished more than 600 homes, and displaced thousands, according to Palestinian officials. In July, the United Nations (UN) warned that mass displacement in the West Bank had reached levels not seen since Israel first occupied the territory in 1967. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), at least 6,463 Palestinians were forcibly displaced between 7 October 2023 and 31 May 2025 following the demolition of their homes by Israeli authorities. That figure does not include an estimated 40,000 people who fled three refugee camps in Jenin and Tulkarem since January due to military operations, or the 2,200 displaced by settler attacks and movement restrictions during the same period. According to Palestinian government figures, at least 1,012 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 7,000 injured in the West Bank, including occupied East Jerusalem, since the war on Gaza began. Vietnamese President Visits Arab League Headquarters in Cairo
Mohamed Mandour Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, met Monday with Vietnamese President Luong Cuong at the League's headquarters in Cairo, marking a high-level diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening Arab-Vietnamese ties. President Cuong, who is on an official visit to Egypt, was accompanied by a senior delegation including the head of the Communist Party's Internal Political Committee and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Education. According to Arab League spokesperson Gamal Roshdy, Aboul Gheit welcomed President Cuong and highlighted the importance of boosting cooperation between Vietnam and the Arab League and its member states. Israeli occupation forces assault journalists, cause fire north of Jerusalem
Amir Hagag Israeli occupation forces assaulted a number of journalists on Monday in the town of al-Judeira, northwest of Jerusalem, while the sound and tear gas they fired caused a fire in the neighboring town of Rafat. The Jerusalem Governorate reported, citing the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA), that occupation soldiers fired sound bombs directly at journalists while they were covering events near the town of al-Judeira, causing injuries and panic in the area. A large fire also broke out in agricultural land in the town of Rafat as a result of the bombs fired by the soldiers. In a related development, Israeli settlers continued their attacks against Palestinian civilians in areas south of Hebron. Under the protection of occupation forces, settlers released their livestock to graze on lands planted with seedlings and fruit trees in the villages of Aqwawis and Sha'b al-Batm in Masafer Yatta. Anti-settlement activist Osama Makhamreh told WAFA that settlers deliberately destroyed crops with the aim of seizing citizens' lands for the expansion of settlements.
