Jockey Of The Week: John Velazquez Won Six Stakes During Belmont Festival originally appeared on Paulick Report.
Just as the Belmont Stakes Festival of Racing got underway on June 4, John Velazquez began accumulating stakes wins at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. By the end of the five-day festival, Velazquez had won a total of six stakes including three designated Grade 1 and one Grade 3 for a total of nine wins for the week. The panel of racing experts voted the Hall of Famer the Jockey of the Week for June 2 to June 8.
The weekly honor recognizes jockeys for significant riding accomplishments and who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 1,050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States.

On Wednesday, New York Showcase Day, Velazquez posted a 2 1/2-length win in 1:43.27 aboard Spinning Colors in the Mount Vernon Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile inner turf route for older fillies and mares for trainer Mark Hennig.
Friday was one of Velazquez's single best days highlighted by three graded stakes wins.
Riding for trainer George Weaver in the G1 Ogden Phipps, Velazquez was aboard Dorth Vader. Under the patient handling of Velazquez, Dorth Vader raced in third until the top of the stretch when the 5-year-old took command cruising to a 4 3/4-length win in 1:49.10 for the 1 1/8 miles over a main track labeled as 'sloppy.' The G1 Ogden Phipps is a 'Win and You're In' for the Breeders' Cup Distaff.
Originally scheduled for two miles on the turf, the G3 Belmont Gold Cup was moved to the main track at 1 3/4 miles. Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, Parchment Party drew into the race as a main track only entrant with Velazquez picking up the mount last minute. The 4-year-old colt raced near the back until the field entered the backstretch when Parchment Party began to pick off his opponents to draw off powerfully and win by 8 1/2 lengths in 2:57.86.
Velazquez capped his day aboard 4-year-old She Feels Pretty for trainer Cherie DeVaux in the G1 New York Stakes at 1 3/16 miles on the yielding turf. Off as the overwhelming favorite in the field of seven, She Feels Pretty stalked the pace until the top of the stretch when she engaged Beach Bomb with Luis Saez. At Velazquez's urging, She Feels Pretty gained the upper hand to win by a half-length in 2:00.76.
Velazquez added another stakes win on Saturday aboard 3-year-old A.P. Kid for trainer Todd Pletcher in the off-the-turf Pennine Ridge moved to the main track at one mile. A.P. Kid drew away from his five opponents to post a 6 1/4-length win in 1:36.83.
On Sunday, Velazquez picked up the mount on the 5-year-old mare Ag Bullet from Flavien Prat who had prior riding commitments as a result of the G1 Jaipur being rescheduled from Saturday. Ag Bullet bested the boys with a two-length win in 1:03.62 for trainer Richard Baltas in the 5 1/2-furlong turf test. The race is a 'Win and You're In' for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.
Other nominees for Jockey of the Week included G1 Kentucky Derby hero Junior Alvarado with his first win in the G1 Belmont Stakes, Kendrick Carmouche who won the G1 Manhattan, Dylan Davis with wins in the G1 Acorn and G1 Just a Game, and Frankie Dettori who won the G1 Met Mile.

All eyes on top-rated recruit Bryce Underwood at QB for No. 14 Michigan

Bryce Underwood is ready to have all eyes on him this season, playing quarterback for No. 14 Michigan, hailed as the top-rated recruit in the country. He's also ready to take some hits. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Underwood told two reporters earlier this summer — at a car dealership that leveraged his name, image and likeness to draw fans for autographs — that he has put on 15 pounds of muscle to get bigger, stronger and quicker. "It's made me more explosive," Underwood said. "I feel way more faster." The Wolverines trail four Big Ten teams in the AP Top 25, but Underwood said people should expect a lot from them on both sides of the ball. "Offense and defense that they never seen before," he said. Second-year coach Sherrone Moore, who might name a starting quarterback on Monday, said Underwood's talent and comprehension of the offense under new coordinator Chip Lindsey are what have stood out the most so far from the freshman. "Consistency is the biggest thing," he said. "Don't turn the ball over, command the offense, make plays." Moore will be suspended for the third and fourth games of the season as a self-imposed sanction in response to the NCAA investigation into the sign-stealing scandal that has loomed over the program for two years. The NCAA also suspended Moore for the 2026 opener, fined the school tens of millions of dollars and reduced official visits by 25% this season. Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said the governing body made errors interpreting its bylaws, adding that conclusions were made that were contrary to the evidence. "We will appeal this decision to ensure a fair result and we will consider all other options," Manuel said. Michigan expects to take pressure off Underwood with a potentially dynamic duo in the backfield. Justice Haynes, who started six games last season at Alabama, and sophomore Jordan Marshall, who ran for 100 yards against the Crimson Tide in a bowl game win, are expected to split time at running back to give the team quite a 1-2 punch. "They compete in the weight room every single day, push each other and they just work as hard as they can," Underwood said. Michigan was 8-5 in Moore's debut season, closing with three straight wins, including a fourth in a row against rival Ohio State and over Alabama in a bowl game. The Wolverines are projected to have similar results this year. The Wolverines' over-under is 8 1/2 wins, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Robby Emery, director of character development for Michigan football, has tried to set the tone with coaches and players to control what they can and to let the rest go. "We're really living by this motto of TNT — today not tomorrow," Moore said. Michigan opens with New Mexico on Aug. 30 under the lights at the Big House. The Wolverines travel to play Oklahoma, where Moore was an offensive lineman nearly 20 years ago, in Week 2. Moore will miss a home game against Central Michigan and the Big Ten opener at Nebraska. The Wolverines play rival Michigan State on the road Oct. 25 and close the regular season at home against rival and third-ranked Ohio State on Nov. 29. Michigan is not scheduled to play No. 2 Penn State, No. 7 Oregon or No. 12 Illinois.

Navy football ready to keep momentum going into 2025 season

There are high expectations that come with playing sports at the United States Naval Academy. The Midshipmen football team, coming off a 10-3 record and a win over Army last season, is looking to ride the momentum into this season. Of course, Navy is identified at the end of the year by the result against its military rival Army, in the last game of the regular season. Navy dominated that game 31-13 in Landover, Maryland. This year's game will be at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on December 13. "You know, you follow a season like we had and finish on a high note, so great momentum going into the offseason," Navy head football coach Brian Newberry said. "And you know we had four tough years before that, so there's kind of been a psychological shift." The Hovath effect That psychological shift was ignited by the play of quarterback Blake Horvath, a senior from Ohio. Horvath was named one of the Top 100 college football players in 2025 by Pro Football Network. He is also on the Johnny Unitas Watch List, an award that will ultimately be given to the nation's best quarterback. "I think there's an immense amount of pride that I have for the team, and a lot of people at the school have for this team," Horvath said. "So just being able to be that for other people, I think, is what brings us joy more than anything else, is being that sense of camaraderie that brings everyone together and gets to pack Marine Corps Stadium every Saturday." Last season, Horvath had 1,246 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns, while passing for 1,353 yards with 13 TDs and four interceptions. Navy racked up 10 wins in 2024, becoming the sixth team in the program's history to win at least 10 games. Along with securing the President's Trophy, the Midshipmen defeated Oklahoma in the Armed Forces Bowl. It was the first time Navy beat an SEC team since 2004. The Midshipmen open their season at home against Virginia Military Institute on Saturday, August 30. "It's a blessing to be able to have the season that we had last year and be able to come into this season with all the supporters that we have," Navy offensive lineman Landon Robinson. "It's a blessing, but we got to put in the work to continue to have that happen, so I'm excited to keep working."

Could Shohei Ohtani pitch in relief in October? Here's what it would take

DENVER — Is there a scenario where Shohei Ohtani is pitching in relief for the Los Angeles Dodgers this postseason? 'Absolutely,' pitching coach Mark Prior told the Dan Patrick Show on Wednesday morning, though Prior clarified Wednesday afternoon that the discussions the organization has had about it have been limited solely to clarifying the language of the rulebook and Ohtani's ability to remain in the game as a hitter in such a scenario. Advertisement Major League Baseball's 'Ohtani Rule,' which was written for the 2022 season, specifies that a starting pitcher can remain in the game as a designated hitter even after being removed from the game as a pitcher. That does not apply the same way if the pitcher entered in relief; if Ohtani starts a game as a designated hitter and enters the game to pitch, removing him would mean taking him out of the game entirely and losing the designated hitter. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts added Wednesday that the concept of Ohtani pitching in relief in October has come up 'internally, just sort of exploring options.' While Prior said on the program that the idea of Ohtani pitching in relief 'has been discussed,' those discussions, Prior said, came back in June as Ohtani was nearing his return to a big league mound. Ohtani had communicated to the organization that he would rather complete his build-up as a pitcher in big league games, so the team essentially had him start games as an opener while keeping his bat in the lineup. "Can I see it? Absolutely." 👀 – #Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior on the potential of Shohei Ohtani coming out of the bullpen during the postseason. — Dan Patrick Show (@dpshow) August 20, 2025 'Maybe it was me asking the question because I didn't have a clear understanding of the moment,' Prior said. 'But if we're using him for one inning, let's use him as a starter. We were trying to talk about how does that play as a reliever. When you read the rulebook, as clear as the rulebook can be at times, he has to be in the lineup as a starter/DH.' The door remains open, regardless, that Ohtani could be used as a reliever at some point in October — it would just have to be in a situation where he would be recording the final outs of the game, such as to avoid the team removing his bat from the lineup. Advertisement 'I think at the end of the day if it gave us a chance to win a ballgame, whatever that added value, I think he would be all-in,' Prior said. 'Within reason. Because I do think he cares about winning ballgames. He cares about helping his team win on both sides of the baseball. So I think if it was presented in that situation, maybe he would. … Again, I don't know what that situation would be but in a kind of playoff, must-win, maybe that would.' Ohtani has only pitched one time in relief since coming over to MLB in 2018, and it wasn't in a big league game; he recorded the final three outs for Samurai Japan to close out the 2023 World Baseball Classic after starting the game as a designated hitter. 'There's still a lot of things we have to get to before it even becomes somewhat tangible,' Roberts said. Including, and most importantly, ensuring that Ohtani gets to October healthy as a starting pitcher, with the Dodgers right now essentially having their ideal group of postseason starting options all healthy between Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw. Also relevant is that Ohtani continues to look as formidable as he has on the mound as he has thus far in his return from a second major elbow surgery. Through his first nine starts (23 1/3 innings), he has a 3.47 ERA and has struck out 32 batters while walking just five. Among the measures the Dodgers have taken to monitor Ohtani, the pitcher, and his workload: while he's built up to five innings, he isn't expected to go any further than that, at least for the remainder of the regular season. Roberts and Prior each confirmed that is still the plan on Wednesday, before Ohtani was set to start on the mound against the Colorado Rockies. 'Right now it's five innings,' Prior said. 'Let's just continue to progress and keep getting him innings and starts and go from there. We'll have those discussions later on and Sho will have a lot of input on those decisions. But right now, it's five.' Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms Play today's puzzle
