Small earthquake shakes the New York area. USGS says magnitude was 3.0
The US Geological Survey said the tremor had a magnitude of 3.0.
It hit in the New Jersey suburb of Hasbrouck Heights, less than 8 miles west of Central Park, at a depth of about 6.2 miles.
One resident of New York's Brooklyn borough described it as a very brief tremor, just a slight swaying for a moment.
Nevertheless, social media quickly lit up with people who felt it. The official account of the Empire State Building reported in on the social platform X to say: 'I AM FINE.'
The tremor was much milder than a 4.8-magnitude quake in 2024 that struck in Tewksbury, New Jersey, a little farther west of the city.
A 3.0 earthquake is typically not strong enough to cause any damage, but tremors that mild are somewhat rare in the Northeast.
New York City Emergency Management said there were no immediate reports of major impacts.

NYC air quality worsens again amid Canadian wildfire haze
NEW YORK — Hazy skies and low air quality returned to the five boroughs on Monday, as smoke from Canadian wildfires again created a gray scene in the New York skies. All of New York state and almost all of New England was under an air quality alert from the National Weather Service on Monday afternoon. The warning for New York City extended until midnight. 'Air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including older adults, children, and people with heart or lung conditions,' NYC's emergency department wrote on social media. 'You may notice a faint smell of smoke, and low visibility conditions.' It has become a depressingly familiar story for New Yorkers in recent years. Smoke from uncontrolled wildfires in Canada, most of them in the province of Manitoba, has been carried south and east by common wind patterns. The worst air quality in recent years occurred in June 2023, when the smoke became so thick it created an orange haze over the city. However, the subpar air quality has returned to the city in each of the past two summers as well, including multiple times earlier this year. 'Limit outdoor activity, close windows, use air purifiers if available, and consider wearing a high-quality mask if you must go outside and are in a sensitive group,' NYC Emergency Management warned. New York was hardly alone in dealing with poor air quality on Monday. All of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Delaware, along with the majority of Vermont were also under air quality alerts. _____

Tsunami Watch Issued for Hawaii, West Coast After 8.7 Earthquake Off Russia
Update (Wednesday, July 30th): Modest waves hit Hawaii and California yesterday and in the early hours of the morning, as a result of the earthquake off Russia. Evacuation orders have been lifted in Hawaii; in Southern California, the tsunami advisory has been lifted. See below for some of the wave action documented in Hawaii and California. On Tuesday, at 4:25pm PDT, an earthquake struck 80 miles off the Kamchatka Peninsula. The magnitude 8.7 quake, which reportedly struck at a depth of 46 miles off Russia, prompted tsunami warnings for Japan, Hawaii, Guam, Alaska, and the entire west coast. NOAA documented the quake, and issued the resulting tsunami warnings. According to an alert from the National Weather Service regarding Hawaii: A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS 0717 PM HST TUE 29 JUL 2025 Regarding the West Coast, the NWS reported: THE TSUNAMI ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE COASTAL AREAS OF CALIFORNIA, OREGON, WASHINGTON AND BRITISH COLUMBIA FROM THE CAL./MEXICO BORDER TO THE BC/ALASKA BORDER If you are located in this coastal area, move off the beach and out of harbors and marinas. Tsunami Waves Hit Japan, Russia After Massive Earthquake (Video)
All inhabitants along the Pacific Ocean, from Russia to Japan to Hawaii and the West Coast, were on high alert yesterday, following an earthquake off the Kamchatka Peninsula. The 8.7-magnitude quake was one of the largest on record, the biggest in the region since the devastating 2011 quake (9.0 on the Richter scale) that hit off Japan. As a result of the quake, tsunami warnings, advisories, and watches were issued across the Pacific Ocean's shorelines. Many evacuated, seeking higher ground. However, the tsunami threat was minimal in places like Hawaii and California – a minor surge, ocean level rise, marginal reports of injury or damage. On the other hand, places close to the epicenter of the quake did see significant sea-level surges – locations like Japan and Russia's Kuril Islands. See some footage below of the wave activity. Scenes of destruction were captured in the town of Severo-Kurilsk in Russia's Kuril Islands. 'We have promptly warned the population and carried out evacuation to upland,' said Valery Limarenko, Sakhalin Regional Governor. 'People will stay there until the tsunami mode is canceled. Tentatively, housing stock hasn't been seriously damaged. There are some minor disruptions: Chimneys were destroyed, there are cases of power supply interruption.' Although downplayed, the footage shows a significant inundation of water through buildings. Over in Japan, nearly two million people were ordered to evacuate, solely in the Iwate Prefecture. Aerial scenes from Hokkaido Prefecture show large, yet inconsequential waves pounding the coast. Additionally, at the Fukushima nuclear plant, the site of mass devastation during the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, 4,000 workers were across the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii and California, tsunami threats have been issued, with some being downgraded or canceled. On Tuesday evening, and into the early morning hours of Wednesday, some tsunami surges were documented, but minimal injuries or structural damage were reported.
