Ben Stokes still facing heat from Australia over handshake-gate: ‘Everything's got to stop because England are done'

Hindustan Times7 days ago
The final day of the fourth Test at Manchester between India and England continues to stir debate, not for the quality of cricket but for the drama in the final half-hour. While several former players have offered mixed views on the early handshake initiated by Ben Stokes and England, former Australian cricketer Brad Haddin has come out in strong support of the Indian team's decision to bat on. England's captain Ben Stokes (L) shakes hands with India's Ravindra Jadeja (R) for a draw on day five of the fourth cricket test match between England and India at Old Trafford(AFP)
Appearing on LiSTNR Sport's YouTube channel, Haddin praised the grit and resistance shown by India's batters, particularly Shubman Gill and KL Rahul, who blunted England's attack after being two down for nothing. 'It's interesting at the end of that Test match because India were two for none. So England are up and about. They thought they were going to win the Test. And that was an unbelievable partnership. Gill once again, KL Rahul was outstanding. And as the game went on, and India showed tremendous fight, unbelievable, the application they showed to bat,' Haddin said.
As the match headed into the final hour, with India clearly safe and both Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja closing in on personal landmarks, England made the surprising call to end the match early. Haddin, however, found no fault in India's approach.
'Then, all of a sudden, it got to a situation where England said they can't win, so let's stop the game. So everything's got to stop because England are done playing. I like what India did, mate, they earned the right to stay out there as long as they need to. They had the right to get a hundred,' he added.
The drama began when Ben Stokes approached the crease with an offer to shake hands and call the game a draw, but both Indian batters refused. With five overs left in the day, they chose to continue, chasing personal milestones. What followed was a verbal exchange between the England players and the Indian duo, but both Jadeja and Sundar went on to complete their centuries before eventually agreeing to the draw.
Lloyd opposed India's decision
Not everyone agreed with India's decision. Former England cricketer David Lloyd was particularly scathing. 'There's a facility to end the game. Take the bails off because it's a farce. Would you want to get your (100) if you're on 80, would you want to get your maiden Test match century against law books?' he said on The Overlap. 'I think the umpire, the game, there's a facility in the game to call a stalemate, of which Ben Stokes called the stalemate,' Lloyd added.
But to many, including Haddin, India simply played within the rules and earned the right to stay.

Sachin Tendulkar's Honest Take On Shubman Gill's Captaincy: "There Were Things..."

As the Indian cricketing folklore sings praises for Shubman Gill 's performance and leadership on the tour of England, there are some who dug their observations deeper in order to analyse the potential Gill holds and the weaknesses he has, both as a batter and a leader. Gill scored 754 runs on the tour of England, breaking several all-time records and valiantly helped India draw the series 2-2. As far as his leadership credentials are concerned, the great Sachin Tendulkar had some interesting insights to share. "All in all, a fantastic result. 2-2, things could've been different, but there are no ifs and buts in cricket," said Tendulkar. "Captaincy has a lot to do with how the bowlers are bowling, how disciplined they are, and how long they can persist with their plans," Tendulkar further added. "Sometimes what happens is that if things are not going the bowlers' way, they start experimenting. That is when the captain feels that the fielders he has on the ground are not enough, he needs more, because runs will be coming from everywhere. "He still looked calm and composed, but when partnerships happen, it becomes difficult for any captain, and the priority becomes to dry their runs." Though Sachin feels there were areas in Gill's decision making as a captain that could've been different, overall, the control the India skipper had on the game and his team impressed him. "Overall I felt he controlled the team well. There were areas, things could've been different but, everyone has their opinion. This was his first series and possibly against the most attacking side in Test cricket. I don't think any other team bats the way this England side does," he said. "Shubman batted brilliantly throughout the series, he looked calm and composed, organised," said Tendulkar. "When it comes to quality batting, you've got to have a clear head and a game plan. And he was extemely consistent as far as his thought process is concerned because it reflects on your footwork. If you are not clear in your head, your body doesn't respond accordingly. His body responded brilliantly, he looked so much control he had so much time to play the ball. "There was precision in his footwork. The most important thing that I noticed was the respect to a good ball. Where the tendency sometimes is to push the ball on your front foot even if the ball is not near your foot, he was able to defend there. And consistently defend well on front foot. His ability to leave was very good. Overall, shot selection was very, very good and precise."

Australia Star Sam Konstas, Who Once Had A Spat With Virat Kohli, Named In Squad Against India A

Australia openers Sam Konstas and Nathan McSweeney were on Thursday named in the 'A' squad bound to India to play two four-day matches in Lucknow in September, with an eye on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2026-27. Konstas had replaced McSweeney during the last India-Australia series Down Under but has failed to nail his spot at the top of the order, having endured a disappointing outing in Caribbean even as his side thoroughly dominated the West Indies. The 19-year-old Konstas is the only current Test player to be named in the 'A' side while the other capped players include McSweeney, Cooper Connolly and spinner Todd Murphy. Murphy, who has so far featured in seven Tests, played each of the four matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy during their India tour in 2022-23, which Australia lost 1-2, claiming 14 wickets. Australia's chairman of selectors George Bailey was quoted as saying by 'The subcontinent provides many unique challenges and the opportunity to utilise different skills with bat and ball.' "We hope repeated experiences in these conditions will assist players in developing an effective method and understanding of their game for future subcontinent tours." "For many of these players we remain interested in the development of their short-form cricket as well, but balancing out priorities meant we wanted them back and available for the start of the Sheffield Shield season,' he added. A notable miss in the red-ball squad are Jason Sangha, who scored 202 not out against Sri Lanka A in Darwin last month, and Matthew Renshaw, who too has the experience of playing Tests in India. Sangha, however, has been named in the one-day squad for the three matches to be played in Kanpur. The two four-day matches will be played in Lucknow from September 16-19 and September 23-26, while the three one-day games will be on September 30, October 3 and 5 respectively. Squads: Four-Day matches: Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Jack Edwards, Aaron Hardie, Campbell Kellaway, Sam Konstas, Nathan McSweeney, Lance Morris, Todd Murphy, Fergus O'Neill, Oliver Peake, Josh Phillippe, Corey Rocchiccioli, Liam Scott. One-Day squad: Cooper Connolly, Harry Dixon, Jack Edwards, Sam Elliott, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Mackenzie Harvey, Todd Murphy, Tanveer Sangha, Liam Scott, Lachie Shaw, Tom Straker, Will Sutherland, Callum Vidler.

No IND vs PAK at Asia Cup hockey as Pakistan makes U-turn after applying for visas: Report

The chances of a India vs Pakistan hockey match during the Asia Cup 2025 in Rajgir, Bihar, now looks extremely bleak as the Pakistan hockey team has reportedly made a U-turn after applying for the visas. read more The Pakistan hockey team will not travel to India to take part in the Asia Cup, which will be held in Rajgir, Bihar, from 29 August 29 to 7 September, a media report has claimed. The winner of the Asia Cup will qualify for the Men's FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 in the Netherlands and Belgium, but it seems Pakistan are not willing to take any chance after the recent border conflict between the two nations. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD As per a report in The Hindu, the Indian government was willing to approve the visas of Pakistani hockey players for the tournament, but the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has decided against travelling for the Asia Cup, citing security reasons. No IND vs PAK at Asia Cup hockey? The Bangladesh hockey team has been sent an invitation for the tournament as a result of Pakistan's withdrawal from the Asia Cup. 'In fact, PHF has written a letter to the Asian Hockey Federation on Wednesday, saying that it won't be able to compete in the Asia Cup due to security reasons. We have invited Bangladesh now,' a Hockey India official told The Hindu. The report further added that the Indian government had clarified in July that no Pakistani sporting team would be denied entry into India for international tournaments. Pakistan also applied for Indian visas at the end of July, but things came to a halt after the Pakistan government asked them not to accept any invitation for travel to India without its 'explicit approval.' The latest decision has also put question marks over the participation of the Pakistani hockey team in the upcoming Junior World Cup, which will take place in Chennai and Madurai in November-December. Pakistan hockey team's last visit to India was in 2023 for the Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai. Pakistan's decision not to travel to India, however, is on expected lines as the relations between the two countries have nosedived since the Pahalgam terror attack in April. India's retaliatory action through Operation Sindoor resulted in massive damage to terrorist camps in Pakistan and the Nur Khan airbase in Rawalpindi.
