Marchand, McIntosh dominate as US end turbulent worlds with record

Yahoo3 days ago
Leon Marchand and Summer McIntosh sealed their golden swimming world championships with dominant victories on Sunday's final day as the United States signed off with a relay record.
Eight days of competition in Singapore wrapped up with French superstar Marchand and 18-year-old Canadian sensation McIntosh underlining their supremacy.
Marchand, who won four individual golds and was the face of his home Paris Olympics a year ago, added the 400m individual medley crown to his 200m medley title this week.
The 23-year-old arrived in Singapore with a lighter programme in an effort to smash Ryan Lochte's 2011 200m IM world record -- and he did just that.
Marchand on Sunday cruised to victory in the 400IM, powering to the wall in 4min 04.73sec, more than three seconds ahead of Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita (4:08.32), with Russian Ilia Borodin (4:09.16) third.
Not to be outdone, McIntosh was similarly emphatic in winning the women's 400IM for her fourth gold in Singapore, to go with triumphs in the 200m medley, 200m butterfly and 400m freestyle.
The world record holder led from start to finish to romp to victory in a championships-record 4:25.78, with Australia's Jenna Forrester and Japan's Mio Narita sharing silver (4:33.26).
McIntosh's only defeat of the championships came on Saturday when she finished third in the 800m freestyle, with the American Katie Ledecky reigning over that event once more to underline her enduring quality aged 28.
The US team were battling acute gastroenteritis all week and faced flak from Olympic greats Michael Phelps and Lochte.
But they silenced the doubters by breaking their own world record in winning the women's 4x100m medley relay.
The Americans were victorious in 3:49.34, beating their previous record of 3:49.63 from Paris a year ago. They also set a mixed 4x100m freestyle world record on Saturday.
The US ended a turbulent week top of the pile with nine golds, ahead of Australia with eight and France and Canada on four -- all by McIntosh.
American three-time Olympic gold medallist Bobby Finke hit back, saying the criticism was "weak" and "stupid".
"Someone wants to say our swimmers are entitled, that's just the dumbest thing I've personally ever heard," world record holder Finke said after winning bronze in the 1,500m freestyle.

China's 12-year-old schoolgirl Yu Zidi -- whose presence at the championships at such a young age has ignited debate -- was just out of the medals in fourth in the 400m medley.
Yu was fourth in all three of her individual events and looks set to become a superstar of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
She goes home with a relay bronze from earlier in the week, and with it a slice of history as the youngest medallist ever.
Australia's Meg Harris beamed from ear to ear after joining compatriot Cam McEvoy as a 50m freestyle champion.
A day after McEvoy won the men's sprint, Paris Olympics silver medallist Harris powered home in 24.02sec to beat Chinese pair Wu Qingfeng (24.26) and Cheng Yujie (24.28).
Harris said becoming an individual world champion was "the dream I have been dreaming of the whole time".
"This is why I swim," said the 23-year-old.
Tunisia's Ahmed Jaouadi added the 1,500m freestyle world title to his 800m crown.
Jaouadi grabbed gold in 14min 34.41sec, ahead of Germany's Sven Schwarz (14:35.69) and American Finke (14:36.60).
There was a Russian victory in the men's 50m backstroke, with world record holder Kliment Kolesnikov dominating for gold in a championships-record 23.68sec.
Russian swimmers are competing as neutrals because of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
The Russians won the men's 4x100m medley relay from France and the United States.
Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte sealed a career fourth women's 50m breaststroke world crown.

German great Mueller signs with MLS Whitecaps

Bayern Munich and Germany forward Thomas Mueller has signed with Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps, the Canadian club announced on Wednesday. The 35-year-old has signed through the end of the 2025 MLS season with an option for 2026, Vancouver said. Mueller announced earlier this year that he would be departing from Bayern Munich - his home for 25 years. His tenure included 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League triumphs. "I'm looking forward to coming to Vancouver to help this team win a championship," Mueller said in a statement. "I've heard great things about the city, but first and foremost I'm coming to win. "I've had great conversations with Axel Schuster and Jesper Sorensen, and now I can't wait to play in front of the supporters and to see all of the fans come out to BC Place as we head towards the playoffs." Mueller arrives at a Whitecaps team currently second in the Western Conference, one point behind leaders San Diego but with one match in hand. "He not only brings a winning pedigree and exceptional football intelligence, but also a tireless work ethic that will elevate the entire team," Whitecaps chief executive Schuster said in a statement. "Thomas is a natural leader whose passion for the game is infectious. This is a statement signing by our club and our ownership -- a transformative moment for our club and our city. We are proud to welcome Thomas to Vancouver." Restricted mainly to a substitute's role in the 2024-25 campaign, Mueller made 49 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals. He retired from international duty in 2024, having won the World Cup with Germany in 2014. He finished his international career with 131 caps, scoring 45 goals. There had been brief speculation that he would land with Los Angeles FC, but the Whitecaps announcement came on the same day that LAFC were expected to confirm the signing of South Korean star Son Heung-min. rg/bb/ea

Waterloo says 'high likelihood' unapproved LiveBarn streams were active since May

The City of Waterloo says there is a "high likelihood" that unscheduled LiveBarn streams at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex (WMRC) ran from May 1 to July 23. City staff were first made aware of the issue on July 23, when it was discovered that a LiveBarn camera meant for streaming minor hockey games was active outside scheduled times, livestreaming footage of children taking part in summer camp activities within view of the camera. A release from the city on Wednesday says the stream is only available to subscribers but, according to LiveBarn, none of the footage was downloaded or shared. The city says the WMRC was the only facility affected in Waterloo. It says other groups, outside of children's summer camps, may have been recorded during the extended period, too. The city says it has contacted all relevant renters of the space and the guardians of campers who may have been impacted. LiveBarn cameras remain offline in all Waterloo arenas while the city works with the Waterloo Minor Hockey Association and the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario. LiveBarn confirms unauthorized livestreaming A LiveBarn spokesperson confirmed livestreaming cameras filmed summer camp programs at: The Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex in Waterloo. Hespeler Arena and Dickson Arena in Cambridge. The Lions Arena and Grand River Arena in Kitchener. The City of Waterloo says according to its contract with LiveBarn, the livestreaming company is responsible for any information recorded through the camera. "The agreement states that LiveBarn has all responsibility for the cameras and associated equipment, including the operation and use, and signage," the city said in an emailed statement sent to CBC last month. The Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner has been notified of the livestreaming issue. "We are in the early stages of gathering information to determine next steps and cannot share additional details at this time. We can follow up with you when there are further developments," said an emailed statement from the privacy commissioner's office to CBC in July. The commissioner said it's not necessary for those impacted to file a complaint, but they can if they want to.

'A perfect spot for him' - Tony Meola endorses Tim Weah's reported move to Olympique Marseille, suggests USMNT player wanted out of Juventus

Meola says Weah pushed for a transfer Says positional inconsistency is motivation Marseille a competitive destination with familiar league WHAT HAPPENED With Tim Weah reportedly a transfer target for Olympique Marseille, former USMNT star Tony Meola endorsed the potential move away from Juventus, especially joining a team with Champions League aspirations. 'Marseille has spent some money over the last two years,' Meola said on the CBS Sports Golazo America podcast. 'This could be a fit... I'm interested to see where Roberto De Zerbi thinks he's going to play. Does he think he's going to play as a wing back because he plays in like a 3-4-3? Does he think he's going to play a little bit higher up the field when he does play with four. Is he a fullback? Is he a winger in that group? "So maybe and he plays on that right side like a right winger so you know... so it's a team that has spent some money and over the last couple years have said that they want to compete at the top of the table and be in Champions League." WHAT MEOLA SAID Meola noted that Weah appeared to be advocating for the move despite playing significant minutes at Juventus last season. 'It seems like he sort of now pushing for this move," Meola said. "There's a couple things that could happen. The messaging he got from Igor Tudor is not the messaging he wanted to hear. He didn't like the situation he was in last year, where he was every week we're just trying to figure out where the hell Timothy Weah was going to fit in and where he was going to play." Meola suggested that Weah was unhappy at Juventus, and wanted to make a move to what he considers a perfect destination. 'I feel like this is more Timothy Weah talking about he wants to move and all of this stuff - the rumors are that he is interested in moving and that he's basically spoken to the club about moving," he said. "I feel like it's coming more from him, which leads me to believe that he's just not happy with what's happening at Juve. It's just a massive club but I still go back to, it's a club where he had really good success last year and was on a great pathway until the initial injury albeit with a different manager at the time. "But it still looked like he was finally settling into a club - remember he won a Coppa Italia the year before... So he's got a nice little history at the club but it just seems like he wants out at Juve and this seems a perfect spot for him.' THE BIGGER PICTURE Weah signed for Juventus in the summer of 2023 from LOSC Lille, and has since made 78 appearances for the club, contributing to 14 goals across all competitions. WHAT'S NEXT? Weah is expected to sign with Olympique Marseille on loan with a €14 million obligation to buy.
