Lake Charles man dies in Jeff Davis Parish boating accident

JEFF DAVIS PARISH, La. () — A Lake Charles man has died after a boating accident on Sunday, authorities said. The body of Danny Harrison, 71, of Lake Charles, was turned over to the Jefferson Davis Parish Coroner's Office. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents received a call around 8:30 p.m. Sunday about a boater that was fatally struck by an engine prop while he was in the water. Investigators said Harrison was operating a 16-foot vessel with a 40-horsepower hand tiller outboard motor when he hit an object in the water and was ejected from the vessel. The unmanned vessel then ran in circles when it struck Harrison in the water. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Harrison was wearing a personal flotation device, but the evidence collected suggests he was not wearing a kill switch lanyard. A kill switch lanyard attached to the operator is required for anyone operating a vessel less than 26 feet with a hand tiller outboard motor over 10 horsepower that is designed to have an engine cut-off switch while the motor is running and the vessel is underway, officials said. East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore said in April that the victims' family was satisfied with the plea deal. 'I'm sorry to the family. I'm sorry to cause them so much pain,' Murphy said in court Tuesday. Murphy pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter and first-degree feticide in connection with the deaths of Kaylen Johnson, 24, and Kaden Johnson, 2, ahead of an April trial. He originally faced two counts of first-degree murder. NCAA says online abuse related to sports betting declined during this year's March Madness

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Online abuse related to sports betting decreased during the NCAA's March Madness basketball tournaments compared with the prior year, but people involved in the competition still received more than 3,000 threatening messages, the NCAA said Tuesday. The NCAA hired Signify Group to monitor messages directed at athletes, coaches, game officials, selection committee members and others with official roles in the tournament. Signify used both artificial intelligence and human analysts to confirm the threats and, when necessary, report them to law enforcement. Overall, abuse related to sports betting was down 23%, the NCAA said in a news release. The men's March Madness bracket was notable this year for the scarcity of upsets, with all four No. 1 seeds advancing to the Final Four and Florida, a popular pick to win it all, claiming the national title. On the women's side, three top seeds made the national semifinals and No. 2 seed UConn, among the pre-tournament favorites, won the championship. The NCAA's analysis found that overall, abusive statements directed at people involved in the men's tournament increased by 140% — much of it directed at the selection committee and coaches — while abuse related to sports betting was down 36%.
