The Chicago Cubs aim to salvage a split of their road trip Thursday afternoon when they play the decisive game of a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays.
After Toronto took the opener 5-1 on Tuesday, Chicago prevailed 4-1 on Wednesday. That puts the Cubs at 2-3 on their six-game trip and 11-12 since the All-Star break.
The Cubs are scheduled to start left-hander Matthew Boyd (11-5, 2.45 ERA), who will be looking for his first win against his original major league team. Boyd is 0-3 with a 4.46 ERA in seven career starts against the Blue Jays, but he has not faced them since 2021.
Toronto right-hander Max Scherzer (2-2, 4.21 ERA) is slated to face the Cubs for the first time since 2022. He is 5-2 with a 2.82 ERA in 11 career starts against Chicago.
The Cubs emerged from their win with an injury to catcher Miguel Amaya, who took a nasty spill crossing first base on an infield single. He was removed from the field on a cart.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said that Amaya had a sprained left ankle and will need a stint on the injured list. X-rays were negative. Amaya was activated from the IL on Tuesday after he had been out since late May with a strained left oblique, and he was in his first game back when he got hurt again.
'It's swollen up pretty good already,' Counsell said postgame of Amaya's ankle. 'Bad luck, unfortunately, and we're going to miss him.'
When Amaya returned from the IL, the Cubs elected to carry three catchers in case there was an injury to one of them. Reese McGuire, who took over on Wednesday, and Carson Kelly will be Counsell's options unless the club adds another catcher to take Amaya's roster spot.
Matt Busch hit a solo homer and a sacrifice fly for the Cubs on Wednesday while Matt Shaw hit his eighth homer since the All-Star break.
The Blue Jays had only two hits in the loss but did score a run in the sixth to end Cade Horton's scoreless streak at 28 1/3 innings. Horton struck out a career-high eight and allowed one hit in 5 2/3 innings.
'This is the hardest team to strike out in baseball,' Counsell said. 'And so, what he did to a very good lineup is just a continuation of what we have seen over this past month. He was awesome. We've had some superlatives with him on each start, and this was maybe the best one.'
Horton gave credit to Amaya's work behind the plate.
'I think we had a really good game plan,' Horton said. 'And you hate to see what happened to him. Just adding him to our lineup and having him behind there -- he's a special player, great teammate.'
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit an RBI double for Toronto and is batting .376/.447/.683 with seven homers and 19 RBIs in 25 games since the All-Star break.
The Blue Jays could have George Springer back soon after he cleared concussion protocol. He has been out since July 28, when a fastball brushed his shoulder and hit his batting helmet. He is scheduled to begin a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday.
'I had days where I felt good and days where I did not,' Springer said. 'Probably three or four days ago, I had my first great day. It's about small victories. Over the past three or four days, I feel like I have had a lot of small victories, and had another one today. I get to go and start the (minor league rehab) process, and we'll see what happens.'

Jays lead the AL and reinforcements are coming

TORONTO – The Toronto Blue Jays are the top team in the American League standings and lead the major leagues in several statistical categories. As good as Canada's lone big-league squad has been this season, the club is set to get even better. Reinforcements will soon be on the way for the Blue Jays, who beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 on Thursday in the rubber game of a three-game interleague series. Outfielder/designated hitter George Springer — one of the team's top performers this season — will likely return at some point during a three-game series against the Texas Rangers that starts Friday night. 'He's been right in the middle of everything this year,' said Blue Jays manager John Schneider. 'And not just with his performance, but I think with what we're doing on the bases and with what the dugout feels like and things like that. The veteran slugger has been taking batting practice in recent days and was scheduled to serve as DH in a tune-up game for Triple-A Buffalo on Thursday night. Over 101 games, Springer has a .291 average, 18 homers, 57 RBIs and an on-base and slugging percentage of .889. He has primarily served as DH this season but can still be slotted into the outfield as needed. 'There's probably benefit to getting him in the outfield a little bit more with how we're built right now … (but) I think he's done really well in the DH spot,' Schneider said. 'I want to keep that going.' Story continues below advertisement Newly acquired starter Shane Bieber could also join the team later this month. He was tabbed to start Friday night in what could be his final rehab appearance for the Bisons. Bieber has been out for over a year after undergoing elbow surgery. Once activated, the 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner could give the Blue Jays a front-of-the-rotation weapon. In addition, top pitching prospect Trey Yesavage was recently promoted to Triple-A and could be in the mix for a late-season call-up. Starter Alek Manoah (elbow) is also rehabbing with the Bisons and could return to Toronto this season as well. The Blue Jays improved their American League-best record to 71-51 with their latest victory. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning off Matthew Boyd to make a winner of Max Scherzer (3-2), who worked seven-plus innings. 'I was just fighting the whole entire at-bat looking for a pitch to hit,' Guerrero said via interpreter Hector Lebron. 'It happened that he left that pitch hanging and then I could connect.' The Blue Jays improved their AL-best home record to 40-20. Toronto leads the major leagues in hits (1,116), batting average (. 268) and on-base percentage (. 337). Photo by Tony Avelar / The Associated Press The Blue Jays are the hottest ticket in town and it's not even close — now that the red-hot, first-place team is riding a sellout streak of 13 consecutive games at the Rogers Centre and is drawing massive ratings numbers for their corporate sister, Sportsnet. Create Account Buck Martinez is back, adding another welcome and familiar touch to the game coverage and the pictures and production from the first-rate Sportsnet once again look spectacular. With the roof open for the first time in the last three games, the stunning drone shots on Thursday's exhilarating 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs once again put a punctuation on how special the dome looks with a full house these days. So how does that momentum build? Cue the latest disruption for the fan base — another Apple TV game on Friday when the Jays open a three-game weekend series against the Texas Rangers and interest, one that arrives when interest in the first-place team is arguably as high as it has been in a decade for a regular season game. The timing is never great for the Apple TV interruption, but for three of the four Jays appearances on the streaming service certainly could be seen as rally killers for Canadian TV audiences. The first appearance came on the opening weekend of the season, essentially robbing Sportsnet of a potentially massive prime time Friday night audience. Another Apple TV date came immediately after the Jays had finished up a sweep of the New York Yankees to seize first place in the American League East. And now this. This is not a knock on the Apple TV production, it needs to be said. The slickly produced shows are designed to attract a younger audience and are not only mandated to do so but have paid for the rights in a national deal with Major League Baseball. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. As well, the Jays fan base is not the only one to endure the interruption of their regularly scheduled baseball programming — it's a league-wide thing. But with the Jays as hot as they are right now — and following the electrifying effort of starter Max Scherzer and the dramatic Vlad Guerrero Jr. home run for Thursday's win to take two of three from the Cubbies — it would have been a virtual lock that Sportsnet would have drawn well over a million viewers on Friday. Read More It has to be particularly frustrating for Sportsnet execs, given the undeniable buzz and momentum around the team right now, storylines that are well told on the broadcasts. The Apple TV crew will be all over the narrative of the Jays elevating from a last-place team to one with the best record in the American League and no doubt chronicle the recent Guerrero heroics. The problem, of course, is that a good portion of the regular audience has no interest in paying a streaming service to hear those stories, especially when they're already Sportsnet subscribers.
