We gear up for digital banking expansion: saib CEO

Zawya17-02-2025

Egypt - Afdal Naguib, CEO and Managing Director of Bank saib, has said that the world is witnessing significant advancements in digital banking transactions. He noted that the Egyptian government and the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) have played a major role in expanding financial inclusion and increasing reliance on technology, encouraging several banks to establish fully digital branches. However, these banks are still awaiting regulatory adjustments and procedural frameworks, such as Digital KYC and electronic signatures, to operate at full capacity and compete globally.
He emphasised that saib's strategy for the coming period is to prepare for this shift, with a primary focus on completing the bank's technological infrastructure and aligning with global information security standards. Once these objectives are met, the bank will develop new digital banking products.
Syndicated loans
Naguib highlighted that bank saib maintains a strong presence in the syndicated loans market, as both an arranger and a participant in existing financing deals. The bank is committed to attracting top talent in this sector to sustain its growth.
As of November 2024, saib's syndicated loan portfolio amounted to EGP 2.7bn and $380m, distributed across key sectors of the Egyptian economy. The bank aims to increase this div in 2025, particularly in financing projects that align with Egypt's economic strategy, including renewable energy and sustainable financing for national projects.
Small and medium enterprises
The bank successfully met the CBE's mandatory 25% SME lending requirement over a year ago and is now exploring new financing products and methods to support small businesses. Additionally, saib is actively participating in the securitisation portfolios of consumer finance companies, extending its role beyond lending to include banking and financial advisory services.

Retail banking
Retail banking is a top priority for saib, according to Naguib. He pointed out that the bank entered the retail banking sector in 2019, significantly later than its peers. However, despite this late entry, SAIB has achieved impressive growth rates and introduced a diverse portfolio of retail banking products.
Over the past five years, the bank's retail portfolio has grown to EGP 17.844bn, while maintaining high credit quality standards. Naguib emphasised that saib is constantly developing innovative products that stand out in the market and revealed that the bank is preparing to launch a new loan product with a positive impact on the sector.
Geographical expansion
The bank has prioritised modernising and upgrading its branches while simultaneously opening new locations to increase its geographical presence. By November 2024, saib had expanded to 44 branches, with plans to add four more in 2025,while continuing to renovate and upgrade existing branches.
Regarding ATMs, saib has significantly expanded its network from 40 machines to 154, ensuring broad geographic coverage and further expansion plans.
Mortgage financing
As part of its collaboration with the Social Housing Fund, SAIB has provided EGP 1.116bn in mortgage financing to 7,000 clients under CBE's mortgage finance initiatives. The bank's share in the 3% subsidised mortgage initiative for low- and middle-income groups stands at EGP 256m.
Digital transformation
Furthermore, saib is executing a comprehensive digital transformation strategy that focuses on developing existing digital banking services based on customer needs. This aligns with Egypt's vision for digital transformation and the transition toward a cashless society.
The bank has expanded its internet and mobile banking services, launching phase two of these platforms in September 2020. Currently, over 60,000 customers use saib's mobile banking services. Additionally, in May 2022, the bank launched phase two of its online banking platform for businesses, which now serves more than 3,500 corporate clients.
Instant payments network
saib was among the first banks to join Egypt's Instant Payments Network in March 2022, allowing customers to execute real-time transfers 24/7.
To further enhance its digital offerings, saib has completely upgraded its ATMs across branches and various governorates. The bank has also launched a new version of the SAIB Wallet mobile payment app and introduced 'Hala Cash' for electronic transactions.
Additionally, the bank has enhanced its customer service centre and introduced saib PayBand, a wearable payment device linked to credit and debit cards.
Moreover, Naguib confirmed that saib is currently upgrading its banking application to align with the latest advancements in financial technology. These developments are expected to improve service quality, expand the bank's product range, enhance customer satisfaction and trust, and reduce wait times at branches by facilitating faster transactions through digital channels.
Sustainable finance
Also, saib places great emphasis on sustainable finance, which plays a crucial role in ensuring long-term financial stability and fostering economic, environmental, and social sustainability. The bank has allocated EGP 894m to support sustainable finance initiatives.
Corporate social responsibility
The bank has updated its CSR policy to align with current developments and address societal needs. saib focuses on initiatives that improve living standards, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment, while also prioritising environmental protection.
Moreover, saib actively supports healthcare and education initiatives, women's empowerment, and economic development projects. The bank has continued its 'El Azzouma' initiative for the sixth consecutive year in partnership with the Egyptian Food Bank, as well as a collaboration with Misr El Kheir Foundation to support the operation of five community schools in underprivileged villages under the 'Decent Life' initiative.
Additionally, saib has been sponsoring kidney dialysis supplies at Qasr Al-Aini Hospital for a year and working with the Mervat Sultan Foundation on a comprehensive eye examination program for children across various governorates.

EBRD supports Egypt with first private-to-private electricity contracts

Energy market reform is taking a major step forward in Egypt as the government approves the first bilateral power purchase agreements between private generators and consumers. As part of a pilot of the private-to-private (P2P) rules, developed with technical support from the EBRD to the Egyptian Electric Utility and Consumer Protection Regulatory Agency (Egypt ERA) and approved last year, four renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 400 MW have been approved to contract directly with end-consumers of electricity. The four approved projects are: KarmSolar, which will develop a 100 MW solar plant to supply electricity to Suez Steel. AMEA Power, which is building a solar facility of the same size to serve BEFAR Group and the Suez Canal Container Terminal. TAQA PV, which will install 100 MW of hybrid capacity (solar and wind) to power operations at Ezz Steel. Enara, developing a hybrid plant to deliver 100 MW to the El Alamein Silicone Products Company and Helwan Fertilizers. The P2P rules set out the conditions under which generators can use the power grid to sell electricity directly to consumers, a major departure from the existing single-buyer model and a significant step forward in Egypt's efforts to liberalise its electricity market – a goal set out in the 2015 Electricity Law. This approach introduces competition into the electricity sector, expands consumer choice and promotes private investments in renewable energy. It also introduces a path for Egyptian businesses, especially those that are energy-intensive and focused on the export market, to sign agreements directly with renewable energy producers that are increasingly required to prove their low carbon product credentials, for example green hydrogen destined for the European market. Furthermore, given the electricity generation under these contracts will be entirely privately financed, the P2P scheme represents an important route for Egypt to scale up electricity production without the need for government contracts. Mark Davis, the EBRD's managing director for the southern and eastern Mediterranean region, said: 'This milestone shows how the right regulatory framework can unlock private investment and drive the energy transition. By enabling companies to procure green electricity directly from producers, Egypt is opening new opportunities for industry and enhancing its competitiveness. We are proud to have supported EgyptERA in designing this pioneering scheme and will continue working closely as projects move towards implementation.' Dr Mohamed Mousa Omran, the chairman of EgyptERA, said: 'This pilot marks an important step towards a more competitive electricity market in Egypt. By enabling direct agreements between producers and consumers, we are creating space for the private sector to play a greater role in meeting the growing demand for clean energy in Egypt. This is essential for accelerating the deployment of renewables at scale and achieving our long-term energy goals.' The EBRD's technical support is generously funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), a key partner for the Bank in many of its ongoing policy engagements that aim to decarbonise the energy sectors of its countries of operation. This work is being delivered under the EBRD's Renewable Energy Programme, which is currently supporting 16 countries in their development of market-based mechanisms to mobilise private investments. To date, activities under this programme have delivered over 8,500 MW of renewable energy capacity being awarded in 8 countries.

Egypt central bank likely to cut rate by additional 400 bps in 2025

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) is expected to cumulatively cut rates by 725 basis points (bps) amid a careful unwinding in 2025, according to Deutsche Bank. In its May meeting, the central bank opted for another rate cut, coming in line with the lender's expectation of 100 bps. Therefore, the policy rate was lowered to 24%, marking the second consecutive cut this year, leading to a cumulative easing of 325 bps. The remaining 400 bps is likely to be distributed in equal parts (i.e., 200 bps) over the third and fourth quarters, Samira Kalla, Economist, Deutsche Bank, wrote in a report. "Overall, this would take the policy rate to 20% by year-end," she said. Meanwhile, economic activity posted a strong recovery of 4.3% in Q2 of the fiscal year (FY) 2025, compared to 2.3% a year ago and 3.5% in Q1 2025. Economic activity is forecast to recover further to 3.9% in FY 2024/25, driven by a gradual recovery in domestic demand and a pick-up in private investments, Kalla said. However, the growth is predicted to remain below its long-term average due to continued challenges, including weaker manufacturing, disruptions in the Red Sea, and fiscal consolidation. On the other hand, FY 2025/26 is expected to witness stronger growth momentum, following a boost in domestic demand, as inflation and financial conditions are anticipated to see a significant easing. Further progress on the divestment of state assets should support private-sector activity as well, Kalla said, adding growth is expected to reach 4.5% in 2026.

Egypt Launches Standardised Reporting Framework for Startups and Investors

Egypt's Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (MSMEDA), backed by World Bank, has collaborated with several venture capital firms and the US-based platform to introduce a standardised portfolio reporting framework for startups and investors across the country. Led by Foundation Ventures, the initiative includes participation from Algebra Ventures, Sawari Ventures, Shorooq Partners, Endure Capital, Camel Ventures, DenVC, LoftyInc Capital, DisrupTech Ventures, and the Climate Resilient Africa Fund. The aim is to establish common metrics, reporting timelines, and formats, addressing the longstanding issue of inconsistent data practices within Egypt's startup ecosystem. Although Egypt's startup scene has expanded significantly in recent years, inconsistent reporting standards remain a key challenge. Startups frequently contend with producing varied reports to meet different investor requirements, while venture capital firms face difficulties in assessing portfolio performance due to the absence of unified benchmarks. The initiative seeks to simplify reporting processes for both general partners (GPs) and portfolio companies through a centralised data platform designed to enhance transparency, reliability, and operational efficiency. 'We are excited about enhancing Egypt's investment attractiveness by providing the necessary transparency to encourage foreign direct investment,' said Mazen Nadim, Managing Partner at Foundation Ventures. Following a competitive selection process, was chosen to develop and operate the platform. The company is working in partnership with Egyptian GPs to tailor the system to local requirements and workflows. The platform is expected to be fully implemented by the end of the second quarter of 2025, with the first comprehensive ecosystem report anticipated by mid-2026. By introducing a unified reporting framework, the effort is expected to ease administrative burdens for startups, provide greater clarity for investors, and strengthen Egypt's position as a destination for regional and international venture capital.
