Private sector firm says significant copper-gold mineralization discovered in Pakistan's southwest
KARACHI: The National Resources Limited (NRL), a private sector company involved in exploring and mining minerals in Pakistan, has discovered significant copper-gold mineralization in the southwestern Balochistan province, the firm said on Tuesday.
NRL, a subsidiary of Fatima Fertilizer, Liberty Mills Limited and Lucky Cement, was awarded a lease in October 2023 for an area that contained two known porphyry prospects with strong exploration potential. Over 15 months, NRL had identified 18 new prospects, one of whom, 'Tang Kaur,' had rapidly progressed to an 'advanced drilling stage.'
'NRL has completed 13 diamond drill holes (3,517 meters), all of which intersected significant porphyry-style alteration, sheeted and stockwork quartz vein sets, and sulfide mineralization,' the statement said, quoting Muhammad Ali Tabba, Chairman NRL and CEO Lucky Cement Limited as he addressed the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum 2025.
'Assay results from the first six drill holes (1,500 meters) confirm strongly mineralized, near-surface zones with downhole intervals ranging from 48 to 148 meters, using a 0.2 percent copper cut-off grade and up to 10 meters of internal dilution. The average grade of the intercepts ranges from 0.23 percent to 0.48 percent copper, 0.09 to 0.14 g/t gold, and 1.30 to 6.21 g/t silver, resulting in a copper equivalent of 0.28 percent to 0.56 percent. The mineralized system remains open to the north, east, and at depth.'
Tabba said advanced drilling at Tang Kaur was scheduled for May 2025.
Additionally, NRL has acquired a lead-zinc exploration license adjacent to a well-known deposit, where a Bankable Feasibility Study had already been conducted, he said. A comprehensive metal value chain was also being studied to assess the feasibility of downstream processing.
'NRL is actively working with the Government of Baluchistan and the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) to secure two additional Copper-Gold Exploration licenses in Chagai, Balochistan supported by a dedicated $100 million exploration fund,' the statement added.
'We have also signed MOU with Oil and Gas Development Company to work on newly acquired leases together. Looking ahead, NRL plans to bring additional national and international investors into the project as required.'
Pakistan is hosting ministers and officials of private mining companies from Saudi Arabia, China, the United States and a host of other countries for a two-day minerals summit in the capital today, Tuesday, as it eyes international investment in its natural reserves estimated to be worth $6 trillion.
Grappling with a prolonged macroeconomic crisis, Pakistan hopes to tap into its vast reserves of minerals and natural resources to turn its fortunes around. The country is home to one of the world's largest porphyry copper-gold mineral zones, while the Reko Diq mine in southwestern Balochistan has an estimated 5.9 billion tons of ore. Barrick Gold, which owns a 50 percent stake in the Reko Diq mines, considers them one of the world's largest underdeveloped copper-gold areas, and their development is expected to have a significant impact on Pakistan's struggling economy.

Minerals to be ‘real game changer' for Pakistan's economy— finance minister
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said on Saturday that the country's minerals sector would prove to be the 'real game changer' for the national economy in the years to come, reiterating the government's ambitions to ensure export-led growth. His comments came following the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum 2025 hosted by the government in Islamabad in collaboration with its partners from Apr. 8-9. The summit was aimed at attracting foreign investment in the country's mining sector and saw participation from major international companies including Canada-based Barrick Gold and government officials from the United States, Saudi Arabia, China, Turkiye, the United Kingdom, Azerbaijan and others. Pakistan is home to one of the world's largest porphyry copper-gold mineral zones, while the Reko Diq mine in southwestern Balochistan province has an estimated 5.9 billion tons of ore. Barrick Gold, which owns a 50 percent stake in the Reko Diq mines, considers them one of the world's largest underdeveloped copper-gold areas, and their development is expected to have a significant impact on Pakistan's struggling economy. But despite rich reserves of salt, copper, gold and coal, Pakistan's mineral sector contributes only 3.2 percent to GDP and 0.1 percent to global exports. The country is now aiming to tap into this underutilized potential. 'So, 2028 onwards when we talk about whether we have an exportable surplus or not, from traditional sectors textile is going to remain absolutely critical for us as we go forward,' Aurangzeb said while speaking to members of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce. 'IT services [also] as we go forward and minerals, as we go forward,' he added. 'This [minerals sector] is going to be the game changer, the real game changer.' Aurangzeb said the minerals summit hosted by Pakistan was reflective of the country's economy heading in the right direction. He said around 300-400 delegates from several countries attended the conference with a keen interest in investing in Pakistan's minerals. 'These are all manifestations that we have to take this forward,' the minister said. Reiterating the government's resolve to ensure export-led growth in the economy, Aurangzeb called upon all economic sectors to export their products to earn Pakistan valuable foreign exchange. 'Every single sector has to export,' he said. 'No one has taken the responsibility that only textile has to export or any other has to.' The finance minister noted that Pakistan's auto manufacturers have started exporting their products, saying there were markets for Pakistani exporters in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and African countries.

Pakistan, Turkiye sign offshore bidding pact for joint oil and gas exploration
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Turkiye this week signed a joint agreement to participate in an offshore oil and gas exploration bid round in Pakistan, the press information department said in a statement. The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum 2025 by Pakistani Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik and Turkiye's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar. Under the agreement, leading Pakistani exploration and production (E&P) companies — Mari Energies Limited, Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), and Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) — will partner with Turkish state-owned enterprise Türkiye Petrolleri Anonim Ortaklığı (TPAO) to jointly bid for offshore blocks. 'This bid round is a significant opportunity for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country's upstream energy sector,' the press information department statement said. 'We believe that this strategic collaboration [with Turkiye] will bring much-needed FDI to Pakistan and pave the way for the sharing and deployment of international technologies, expertise, and skillsets to explore and exploit the untapped potential of Pakistan's offshore region.' Pakistan's offshore consists of two distinct geological basins, Makran and Indus, which together cover an area greater than 282,623 sq km. In a major policy shift aimed at revitalizing Pakistan's energy sector, the government in February announced the auction of 71 oil and gas exploration blocks, 40 offshore and 31 onshore, while also unveiling plans to deregulate fuel prices. These measures are expected to enhance domestic energy production, attract foreign investment, and introduce competitive pricing in the petroleum market. Then Federal Minister for Petroleum Musadik Malik made the announcement at the Annual Oil and Gas Conference in Islamabad in February, highlighting the urgent need to expand exploration efforts. He said Pakistan had drilled only 18 offshore wells in the past 60 years, far behind regional peers such as India and Bangladesh, which have made significant discoveries in offshore fields. To bridge this gap, the government was now offering 40 offshore blocks for bidding, providing investors with an opportunity to tap into the country's largely unexplored maritime energy reserves. Additionally, 31 onshore blocks had been made available to expand domestic oil and gas production.

Barrick's Reko Diq project in Pakistan aims for $2 billion international financing
KARACHI: Barrick Gold's Reko Diq copper and gold project in Pakistan intends to lock in upwards of $2 billion in financing from international lenders, with term sheets signed by early Q3, its project director for the mine told Reuters on Tuesday. The funding will support the development of the Reko Diq mine, one of the world's largest underdeveloped copper-gold deposits, which is hoped to generate $70 billion in free cash flow and $90 billion in operating cash flow. Barrick Gold and the governments of Pakistan and Balochistan own the project jointly. The financing for phase one of the project, which is expected to start production in 2028, is being discussed with multiple lenders. In an interview with Reuters at the Pakistan Minerals Investment Forum 2025, the Reko Diq's Project Director, Tim Cribb, said the mine is looking at $650 million from the International Finance Corporation and International Development Association. Cribb added that the mine is also in talks with the US Export-Import Bank for $500 million to $1 billion in financing, as well as $500 million from development finance institutions including the Asian Development Bank, Export Development Canada, and Japan Bank for International Cooperation. 'We expect to close the term sheet in either late Q2 or early Q3,' said Cribb. He said railway financing talks are underway with the IFC and other lenders, with infrastructure costs estimated at $500-800 million, with roughly be $350 million as initial cost. A recent feasibility study has upgraded the project's scope, with phase one throughput increasing to 45 million tons per annum from 40 million, and phase two throughput rising to 90 million tons per annum from 80 million. The mine life has been revised to from 42 years to 37 years due to the rising throughput, although the company believes unaccounted-for minerals could extend the life to 80 years. The cost of phase one has also been revised upwards to $5.6 billion from $4 billion. The World Bank plans to invest $2 billion annually in Pakistan's infrastructure over the next decade. The lenders are expected to secure offtake agreements, with potential clients including countries in Asia such as Japan and Korea, as well as European nations like Sweden and Germany, which are looking to secure copper supplies for their industries, Cribb said.
