Sex workers' collective calls for bar to be shut

A sex workers' collective is calling for a new Queenstown bar featuring strip shows to be shut down as it is not operating under an "adult entertainment" liquor licence.
The Ultimate Man Cave Seek — 40% owned by controversial Christchurch-based strip club chain Calendar Girls — opened last Friday in underground Church St premises formerly occupied by the Seek nightclub.
Promotions for the venue's first two nights depicted two strippers around a pole and promised "lap dancers, private rooms, karaoke, gaming — whatever you desire we're here to provide".
However, Calendar Girls founder James Samson said the bar was primarily a sports tavern, which only had Calendar Girls strip shows, lap dances and pole dancing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 9pm.
Early this year, Christchurch-based Alan Samson Ltd, whose sole director is James Samson's mother, Vicki Samson, bought 40% of Seek Night Club Ltd with the intention of buying the remaining shares over 18 months.
Mr Samson is barred from owning a company after being jailed on drugs charges.
Seek Night Club Ltd then applied for an adult entertainment liquor licence, which attracted a total of 71 written objections.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council confirmed "there is currently no date set for a hearing".
In its application, Seek Night Club Ltd said when it reopened it would remain a tavern until its adult entertainment liquor licence was granted.
Sex workers union Fired Up Stilettos chairwoman Bianca Beebe said "we were really surprised to learn they're able to reopen on an expired tavern licence, particularly since the police objected very strongly to the idea you can operate a strip club on a tavern licence".
Though that licence had expired, "you're allowed to continue operating your licence if you have already applied for a renewal" — which had been in train since mid-last year, the council confirmed.
A tavern licence permits "entertainment", which Ms Beebe said she thought was being used as a loophole to allow Calendar Girls to run strip shows at the venue.
"Unfortunately, neither in statutory or case law does it define what entertainment is."
She said the situation was "making a mockery of all of Queenstown's restrictions, and honestly I don't understand how every business owner who has a legitimate licence isn't furious".
"I would ask if Queenstown council wants to be a joke.
"Seek/Calendar Girls were told they cannot operate a strip club on a tavern licence, and here they are explicitly advertising for and operating a strip club under a tavern licence."
Ms Beebe questioned whether the council was going to be played for a fool, "or are you going to do something about this?"
Queenstown Mayor Glyn Lewers said his regulatory team was preparing a report for the district licensing committee on whether the venue could operate under its existing tavern licence due to the "entertainment" provision.
"There is case law that defines what a tavern is, but there's nothing that talks about entertainment that we can see.
"From my point of view, there is a grey area.
"Look, they might be testing the limits on 'entertainment' with respect to a tavern, but I'm not the decision-maker here."
Asked if lap dancing and nude dancing were normal entertainment in a tavern, Mr Lewers said "I might be old school".
"[For me] it's turning up for a jug with your mates with a bit of pool and watching a bit of sport on TV and the occasional meat raffle."
Asked if council could apply some urgency to its decision-making , he responded: "look, like with all legislation from central government, they've got timeframes to meet".
As for the adult entertainment licence application, "we'll prepare a report and take into account all the submissions".
"That report will then go to the district licensing committee, and if the applicant wants to pursue that licence, that will go to a hearing and that hearing will be made public, and it will be on our website."
Mr Samson, however, said he would now withdraw the application for an adult entertainment licence.
Last September, a petition trying to stop Calendar Girls coming to Queenstown was launched by a dancer from existing local strip club Soho.
Spurred by concerns over Mr Samson's link to Calendar Girls and over the chain's alleged "labour exploitation", it attracted 1724 signatures before it was pulled by its host website.

Tingjun Cao to be sentenced for murder of Christchurch real estate agent Yanfei Bao

Photo: NZME/George Heard Chinese national Tingjun Cao will today be sentenced for the murder of Christchurch real estate agent Yanfei Bao. Cao lured the 44-year-old to a Hornby home under the pretence of wanting to view the property before attacking her, putting her in the boot of his car and killing her on a remote rural road near Lincoln on 19 July, 2023. He buried her in a shallow grave along the treeline of a farm in Greenpark where police found her remains almost a year later. Missing Christchurch real estate agent Yanfei Bao Photo: RNZ / NZ Police Bao's husband Paul Gooch reported her missing the day she vanished after discovering his wife had not collected her daughter from an after-school programme, had not come home for lunch and calls to her phone went unanswered. Police found Bao's phone in grass beside the Christchurch Southern Motorway two days later. Cao was arrested at Christchurch Airport in the days after her disappearance with a one-way ticket to Shanghai. He was initially charged with Bao's kidnapping but the charged was later dropped. Cao was charged with murder in September 2023. A jury found the 54-year-old guilty following a seven-week High Court trial, during which he sacked his defence lawyers and represented himself with the help of a trio of interpreters. Justice Lisa Preston repeatedly warned Cao about asking irrelevant questions, making meandering and repetitive statements, and accusing witnesses of lying. The prosecution described the case against Cao as an "absolute slam dunk" with compelling and overwhelming evidence demonstrating his guilt. An abundance of digital data placed Cao and Bao together at the time of her disappearance and death and, ultimately, where her body was found. DNA also linked the pair to the Hornby property from which Bao disappeared. Cao's palm print was found on her broken cellphone, including on the internal battery, and there was a photo of a naked woman's body taken by Cao's phone and later deleted. His defence centred around a conspiracy and alternative perpetrator named Mr Tang, who Cao was unable to prove existed. Cao claimed police officers had lied, fabricated, planted evidence and doctored images and videos to frame him. In delivering his closing argument, he regularly turned and spoke to the glass panes of an empty dock and at other times rambled through measurements and minutiae which were difficult to link to his innocence or the case. Following the guilty verdict Gooch yelled at Bao: "You might want to get a refund on that plane ticket you scum bag." Photo: The Press / Peter Meecham Outside court, Gooch detailed the enormity of his family's loss. "Coming to terms with this devastating loss has been an incredibly challenging journey, especially considering the complete lack of remorse displayed by the individual responsible," he said. "His actions throughout this trial have highlighted a profound absence of humanity." Detective Inspector Nicola Reeves paid tribute to Bao's family. "This was no ordinary case and it will leave a lasting impact on all staff involved including myself," she said. "We would like to acknowledge the strength of Yanfei Bao's family who have endured a terribly distressing experience. "Our thoughts are with Yanfei's family and while the verdict has been reached, this is just one part of the healing process. I acknowledge the strength they have shown and, while the outcome does not bring Yanfei back, I hope they take some comfort knowing that the person responsible will be held accountable." Justice Preston will sentence Cao at the High Court in Christchurch. The Sentencing Act contains a presumption convicted murderers will be sentenced to life imprisonment unless such a sentence is manifestly unjust. If sentenced to life, Cao would spend no less than a decade behind bars, but Justice Preston could also engage section 104 of Sentencing Act allowing judges to impose a non-parole period of at least 17 years for particularly egregious murders. Remarkables Park villas in high demand

An artist's impression of Queenstown's Kawarau Villas. PHOTO: SUPPLIED A two-level apartment development in Queenstown's Remarkables Park appears to be hitting the sweet spot with the market. Launched last September, the first 39-unit stage of Kawarau Villas is already under construction at 7 Juniper Pl, right below the Remarkables Park shopping centre. The second stage, comprising 38 units, officially launched last month, and already nearly half of the 77 released homes are under contract, Bayleys' residential projects GM Gavin Lloyd says. "We believe this is the fast-selling project in Queenstown." Prices in this stage range from $850,000 to $1.05million — they're mostly three-bedders with just one two-bedder left to sell. Lloyd says the development — which will be 120 units all up — has attracted a wide range of buyers, from owner-occupiers, including first-home buyers, to investors who are particularly attracted by the 365-days-a-year visitor accommodation consent. Described as "contemporary living with alpine charm", Kawarau Villas is said to have "a sleek and minimalist Nordic-inspired design" that combines luxury with functionality. Each terrace home comes with a private backyard and a carpark. There are four typologies — the sole two-bed option is 67sqm and the three-bed options range from 82-86sqm. The developer's Auckland-based Tony Gapes' Redwood Group, which also developed Frankton's Five Mile shopping centre, central Queenstown's The Alex Apartments and Arthurs Point's Coronet Peak Alpine Villas.

Evergreen acquires REDD, celebrates $1 billion revenue milestone

Evergreen has reached its 100th managed IT services provider acquisition milestone with the addition of REDD, an Australia-based business, to its Lyra Technology Group portfolio. REDD, headquartered in Brisbane, will continue to operate independently as part of Lyra Technology Group, Evergreen's collection of managed IT services providers. The company was established in 2016 by Nigel Heyn, and under the leadership of Heyn and Chief Executive Officer Brad Ferris, REDD has grown through a focus on technical expertise and business management. Brad Ferris will remain CEO, and the business will retain its existing operations, following the model Evergreen applies in its portfolio which prioritises decentralisation. Global expansion Evergreen currently operates in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. The company is exploring expansion into Ireland as well as the Nordic and Benelux regions. Details of the acquisition were not disclosed by either party. Craig Fulton, M&A Advisor at Evergreen, commented: "Nigel and Brad's leadership and values align closely with Evergreen's long-term vision. In becoming part of the Evergreen network, REDD is positioning itself for continued success while contributing valuable insights to peers across the portfolio." Ferris provided his perspective on the development, saying, "REDD has always been built on a commitment to exceptional service, strong relationships, and a culture that puts people first. That doesn't change. What excites us about joining Evergreen and Lyra is the opportunity to stay true to who we are while being bolstered by a global network of like-minded businesses. This partnership enhances our ability to deliver for our clients, share best practices, and tap into a deep pool of expertise — all while preserving the team, culture, and values that make REDD unique." Financial milestone and recognition Evergreen has also been recognised as the first Pax8 partner to generate over $1 billion in IT services revenue. In addition, last month Evergreen Vice President Sydney Hockett was named to CRN's Women of the Channel list. The company recently hosted its first Evergreen Elevate event, designed as a free opportunity for managed service providers to obtain strategic insights relating to exit strategies. Ramsey Sahyoun, Co-Founder and M&A Partner at Evergreen, said, "When we started this company seven years ago, we hoped to replicate the Berkshire Hathaway model and build the best home for MSPs. I'm proud that we've stayed committed to that vision, to our decentralized operating model, and to our permanent hold strategy. It's been a rewarding journey, and we are grateful for the MSP business owners that have trusted us with their companies." Stakeholder and partner perspectives Lloyd Wolf, Founder and former CEO of Wolf Consulting, which was the first managed IT services provider acquired by Evergreen in December 2017, commented on his experience: "Selling the ownership of my business was one of the biggest decisions of my life. I first met Jeff Totten, CEO of Evergreen, in the fall of 2017. He shared with me his vision of building the best home for businesses and their leaders, retaining our employees and taking care of them, and investing in continued future growth – all while operating in a decentralized model that would allow the business to maintain its culture and independence. This approach and model were very different from any other buyer I had met. I was excited that I had found the permanent home for my business and employees. Since then, Evergreen and Lyra Technology Group have truly executed the vision Jeff originally shared with me. From Wolf Consulting to REDD, I couldn't be more proud of Evergreen's and Lyra's growth and success." Lane Brannan, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Americas, at Pax8, also congratulated the business: "It's been impressive to witness the growth and revenue milestones Evergreen and Lyra have achieved over the last few years. While obtaining a billion dollars of revenue is an impressive achievement alone, it also signals the critical role and impact MSPs have in driving technology adoption within the SMB market. We look forward to fueling our strong partnership with Lyra and congratulate them on this significant milestone." Evergreen continues to emphasise its practice of a permanent hold strategy and a decentralised operating model in the managed IT services sector, as it further expands its international presence and portfolio.
