China supports Cambodia-Thailand border peace via ASEAN Way
The Chinese Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Beijing's backing for resolving disputes through dialogue under the ASEAN framework.
A ministry spokesperson stated that the ceasefire demonstrates the effectiveness of peaceful negotiations.
'China upholds a just and fair position, supports Cambodia and Thailand in enhancing communication and resolving differences, supports advancing political settlement through the ASEAN Way,' the statement read.
The remarks followed the outcomes of the Extraordinary Meeting of the General Border Committee held in Kuala Lumpur.
Cambodia and Thailand agreed on a ceasefire monitoring mechanism and follow-up measures during the meeting.
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Tea Seiha and Thailand's Acting Defence Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit co-chaired the discussions.
Malaysian officials, including Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, attended as observers.
China's Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing, and US Ambassador Edgard D. Kagan were also present.
'Cambodia and Thailand held an extraordinary GBC meeting and reached understanding on the implementation arrangements, monitoring mechanism and follow-up matters of the ceasefire, laying the foundation for realising an effective ceasefire and cementing lasting peace between the two sides,' the statement added.
China pledged to continue supporting peaceful resolutions to regional conflicts. - Bernama

Trump and Putin to meet to discuss Ukraine peace deal in Alaska
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end of the war in Ukraine on August 15 in Alaska, Trump said on Friday. Trump made the announcement on social media after he said that the parties, including Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, were close to a ceasefire deal that could resolve the three-year conflict. Addressing reporters at the White House earlier on Friday, Trump suggested an agreement would involve some exchange of land. "There'll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both," Trump said. In his evening address to the nation, Zelenskiy said it was possible to achieve a ceasefire as long as adequate pressure was applied to Russia. He said he had held more than a dozen conversations with leaders of different countries and his team was in constant contact with the United States. Putin claims four Ukrainian regions – Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson – as well as the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which he annexed in 2014. His forces do not fully control all the territory in the four regions. Ukraine has previously signalled a willingness to be flexible in the search for an end to a war that has ravaged its towns and cities and killed large numbers of its soldiers and citizens. But accepting the loss of around a fifth of Ukraine's territory would be painful and politically challenging for Zelenskiy and his government. The U.S. and Russia were aiming to reach a deal to halt the war in Ukraine that would lock in Moscow's occupation of territory seized during its military invasion, Bloomberg News reported earlier on Friday. Tyson Barker, the U.S. State Department's former deputy special representative for Ukraine's economic recovery, said the peace proposal, as outlined in the Bloomberg report, would be immediately rejected by the Ukrainians. "The best the Ukrainians can do is remain firm in their objections and their conditions for a negotiated settlement, while demonstrating their gratitude for American support," said Barker, a senior fellow with the Atlantic Council. Under the putative deal, according to Bloomberg, Russia would halt its offensive in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions along current battle lines. TRUMP AND PUTIN The last time Alaska hosted a high-stakes diplomatic gathering was in March 2021, when senior officials from the administration of Democratic former president Joe Biden met with top Chinese officials in Anchorage. The get-together involving Biden's top diplomat Antony Blinken and his then Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi quickly turned into a stunning public clash in front of the cameras, with both sides leveling sharp rebukes of the others' policies that reflected the high tension in bilateral ties. Since his return to the White House in January, Trump has moved to mend relations with Russia and sought to end the war. In his public comments he has veered between admiration and sharp criticism of Putin. In a sign of his growing frustration with Putin's refusal to halt Russia's military offensive, Trump had threatened to impose new sanctions and tariffs from Friday against Moscow and countries that buy its exports unless the Russian leader agreed to end the 3-1/2 year conflict, the deadliest in Europe since World War Two. It was unclear by Friday evening whether those sanctions would take effect or will be delayed or cancelled. The administration took a step toward punishing Moscow's oil customers on Wednesday, imposing an additional 25% tariff on goods from India over its imports of Russian oil, marking the first financial penalty aimed at Russia in Trump's second term. Trump says will meet with Putin 'very shortly'
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said Friday he would meet "very shortly" with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, and suggested that a deal between Moscow and Kyiv could involve swapping territory held by the two sides. Tens of thousands of people have been killed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, with millions forced to flee their homes in eastern and southern Ukraine. Putin held consultations Friday with the leaders of China and India to seek support ahead of the summit with Trump, who has spent his first months in office trying to broker peace in Ukraine without making a breakthrough. "I'll be meeting very shortly with President Putin. It would have been sooner, but I guess there are security arrangements that unfortunately people have to make," Trump said at the White House. The US president also said "there'll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both" Ukraine and Russia and that the issue would be discussed soon, without providing further details. The Kremlin said Putin had updated Chinese President Xi Jinping on "the main results of his conversation" with US special envoy Steve Witkoff, who visited Moscow earlier this week. Xi expressed support for a "long-term" solution to the conflict, the Kremlin said. China's Xinhua state news agency quoted Xi as having told Putin: "China is glad to see Russia and the United States maintain contact, improve their relations, and promote a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis." Three rounds of talks between Russia and Ukraine have failed to yield a breakthrough and it remains unclear whether a summit would bring peace any closer. Putin has resisted multiple calls from the United States, Europe and Kyiv for a ceasefire. He has also ruled out holding talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy at this stage, a meeting the Ukrainian president says is necessary to make headway on a deal. Putin has named the United Arab Emirates as a potential location for the talks, but this was not confirmed by Washington. The summit would be the first between sitting US and Russian presidents since Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva in June 2021. Trump and Putin last sat together in 2019 at a G20 summit meeting in Japan during Trump's first term. They have spoken by telephone several times since January. South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa said he spoke to Zelenskyy Friday, a day after he had a call with Putin to discuss "peace process efforts." The South African government has been criticised at home and abroad for initially refusing to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but has always maintained it holds an unaligned position and in April hosted Zelenskyy in Pretoria. Donetsk governor Vadym Filashkin said Friday that families with children would be evacuated from 19 more villages in the region's east, where Russian forces have been advancing. The villages, home to hundreds of people, are all within about 20 miles (30 kilometres) of the front line.

"Tianjin summit will be a gathering of friendship": China welcomes PM Modi for SCO Summit
New Delhi [India], August 8 (ANI): China has officially extended a welcome to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, which will be held in Tianjin at the end of this month. Addressing a press briefing in Beijing on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made this announcement, expressing optimism that the gathering would strengthen regional cooperation. The Ministry of External Affairs has not yet issued a statement on the Prime Minister's visit. The development comes amid tariffs imposed on India by United States President Donald Trump for buying Russian oil. 'China welcomes Prime Minister Modi to China for the SCO Tianjin Summit. We believe that with the concerted effort of all parties, the Tianjin summit will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship and fruitful results, and the SCO will enter a new stage of high-quality development featuring greater solidarity, coordination, dynamism and productiveness,' the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated. China will host the SCO Summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1 this year and leaders of over 20 countries, including all member states of the SCO, and heads of 10 international organisations will attend relevant events as per the Chinese Ministry spokesperson. Prime Minister Modi last visited China in 2018 on two occasions. First, during the month of April for the India-China Informal Summit at Wuhan, and later in June for the 18th meeting of the Council of Heads of State of SCO in Qingdao. Prime Minister Narendra Modi last met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in October 2024 on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. During their meeting, both leaders welcomed the agreement on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. They agreed that the Special Representatives would meet at an early date to oversee the management of peace and tranquillity in border areas and to explore a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question. This meeting occurred shortly after the disengagement and patrolling agreement, and the resolution of issues that had arisen in the India-China border areas in 2020. It was a highly anticipated meeting between PM Modi and President Xi, as it came at a pivotal moment in India-China relations, during a time when there was a border standoff between India and China that began in eastern Ladakh along the LAC in 2020, sparked by Chinese military actions. PM Modi also assured India's full support to China's 2025 SCO presidency during the meeting. the SCO was established in the year 2001. Apart from India the other countries in the bloc are China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan,Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Iran and Belarus. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers' meeting in Qingdao in China in June this year. Earlier this year, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, along with fellow Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers, called on Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin. During the meeting, Jaishankar apprised Xi of the recent development of bilateral ties and conveyed the greetings of President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Xi.
