Diogo Jota: Liverpool's emotional Anfield tribute to late star and brother

The Australian6 days ago
It marks the first match at Liverpool's home since the Portuguese forward tragically passed away in a car accident last month.
Liverpool legend Phil Thompson was joined by Bilbao's club president Jon Uriarte and they laid down a wreath of flowers each just before kick-off.
One wreath was for Jota and the other for his brother Andre Silva, who was in the car with him and also died at the scene.
At the same time, tens of thousands of Liverpool fans in attendance chanted Jota's song.
Pre-match proceedings were disrupted earlier in the day when the fire alarms went off, leading to Liverpool's famous ground being evacuated.
The alarms have been since proven to be false and first went off just over an hour before the game started.
A club statement read: 'Shortly before 3:50pm there was a false alarm in the Anfield Main Stand, leading to supporters in that area of the stadium to be temporarily evacuated.
'Fans are now being let back into the Main Stand and there is no expected delay to KO.
'Thank you for everyone's co-operation.' That led to everyone in the ground having to leave before coming back in to pay tribute to Jota.
The club also have a special programme dedicated to Jota, which includes various pictures of him on the cover, and a caption that reads: 'Forever our number 20'.
The Reds have also already announced that his number is being permanently retired by the club.
And at Anfield, it was a sight to behold as the stadium was covered in thousands of Jota flags and shirts.
In the programme, there is a special message from Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, which reads: 'He will always be with us.
'I always come back to the fact that we have to look after Diogo's family, his parents, and that's the main thing.
'You think about so many different things, and it's difficult to process. 'You can't imagine the pain, the feeling that they have. That's why we try to be there as much as we can, and for each other as well.' Ahead of the game, there were Jota scarves and flags everywhere, while several murals have popped up all over the city.
The football world is still reeling from the tragic death of Jota and his brother Silva on July 3 in Spain.
The duo were travelling to get the ferry to Merseyside when they were involved in the fatal car crash.
The forward's teammates have marked a lot of pre-season by re-creating a celebration dedicated to Jota's love of FIFA and online games.
In the match itself, the Reds went 2-0 up inside the opening five minutes thanks to goals from Darwin Nunez and Rio Ngumoha.
They are now 4-1 up with an own goal from Alex Padilla and Harvey Elliott adding gloss to the scoreline.
But the LaLiga side have pulled one back through Gorka Guruzeta. The two teams play each other in a second friendly at Anfield on Monday, which kicks off at 8pm.
The Reds kick-off their Premier League title defence next Friday in the opener, live on talkSPORT.They welcome Bournemouth to Anfield on what is sure to be another emotional night. Football

Liverpool spend big to hold off Arsenal, City in Premier League title fight

Liverpool have splashed out to defend their Premier League title as champions but face stiff competition from an Arsenal side desperate to shake off their tag as nearly men and a rejuvenated Manchester City. After storming to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title in Arne Slot's first season in charge, Liverpool have looked to build from a position of strength during a summer marked by tragedy. Portuguese forward Diogo Jota was killed in a car accident alongside his brother last month, plunging the club into mourning. Tributes to Jota will continue throughout the season with "Forever 20" -- his shirt number, which the club have now retired -- printed on Liverpool's jerseys. The Reds have already spent £260 million ($350 million) on Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. However, after the departures of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, they are not yet done in strengthening their forward line and are expected to launch a fresh bid for Alexander Isak, with Newcastle demanding a British transfer record fee for the Swedish striker. Liverpool's rivals will hope Wirtz and Ekitike take time to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League after shining in Germany's Bundesliga, while there are defensive doubts for Slot's men to answer. The Dutch coach said his side need to defend better after leaky performances in pre-season were followed by defeat in the Community Shield to Crystal Palace on Sunday after twice blowing the lead. - Can Gyokeres fire? - After finishing second for the past three seasons, Arsenal are longing for their first title in 22 years and have backed Mikel Arteta with another near £200 million investment in the transfer market. Spanish international Martin Zubimendi will be the new anchor of the midfield, while the signings of Christian Norgaard, Cristhian Mosquera, Noni Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga add depth to the squad. But Arsenal's season is likely to be defined by whether Viktor Gyokeres proves to be the answer to their need for a prolific striker. The Swede struck 97 times in 102 games during two years at Sporting Lisbon, but the 27-year-old failed to make a breakthrough in the Premier League during his previous experience in England. After coming up short at Brighton, Gyokeres scored 41 goals in 121 games in England's second tier with Coventry and Swansea. "He's a player that, when you leave him with the space one against one, he's going to destroy you," said Arteta of his new striker. City were dethroned last season after an unprecedented run of four consecutive titles as the wheels came off for Pep Guardiola's men without Ballon d'Or winner Rodri. The Spaniard has been ruled out till September due to a setback in his return from a serious knee injury, but City have refreshed their squad with the additions of Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki. After a first trophyless season since 2016/17, City expect to be back in the fight for the title. - World champions Chelsea - Chelsea were the last side other than City and Liverpool to lift the title back in 2017 and showed they are a coming force once more by winning the Club World Cup in the US last month. The Blues finished fourth, 15 points behind Liverpool last season, but their transfer policy of investing heavily in scores of young prospects is beginning to bear fruit. Joao Pedro made an instant impact with three goals in three games at the Club World Cup after a £55 million move from Brighton and could solve Chelsea's need for a world class goalscorer. Manchester United have transformed their forward line with the signings of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo after finishing 15th last season. Beating United in the Europa League final was not enough for Ange Postecoglou to keep his job as Tottenham manager and former Brentford boss Thomas Frank has taken over in north London. Promoted trio Leeds, Sunderland and Burnley are aiming to avoid a worrying trend for the competitive balance. For the past two seasons all three promoted clubs have gone straight back down as the gap between the riches of the Premier League and the second tier continues to grow. kca/nf/gj

‘Disappointing' scenes as fans disrupt Diogo Jota tribute before Liverpool's loss in Community Shield

A tribute to former Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva was disrupted on Sunday when some fans at the Community Shield match failed to observe a moment's silence. Before the game between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium both teams and their staff stood silently to commemorate the brothers, who died in a car accident in Spain in July. A minority of Palace fans broke the silence, eliciting a strong response at the other end of the field as well as from other Eagles supporters who tried to silence those not respecting the tribute. Referee Chris Kavanagh was then forced to blow his whistle to signal the end of the tribute, well short of the planned minute. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was shocked by the reaction. 'Yes, I am disappointed. That is the only thing I can say. I don't know who did that but there was plenty trying to shush it down, but obviously that doesn't help it,' he said after the match. 'You can't control it (with) how many fans were here today. Was it 80,000 people? So, yeah, it is disappointing to hear that, but if that person or those persons can go home and be happy with themselves, then…' Liverpool manager Arne Slot later played down the incident after the match. 'I don't think this was planned, or that this was the idea of the fan that made some noise,' he said. 'Maybe he wasn't aware of the fact that it was the minute of silence. 'And I think then the fans of Palace were trying to calm that person or those persons down ... They tried to calm him down, but that was a bit noisy as well. And then our fans reacted, 'Hey, what's happening here?'' Crystal Palace won the match on penalties after an entertaining 2-2 draw. The Community Shield is seen as the traditional curtain-raiser for the top-flight season in England and is played between the defending league champion and the winner of the FA Cup. It was Liverpool's first major game since the death of Jota, who was 28. The brothers died when the Lamborghini they were in veered off a road and burst into flames near the northwestern city of Zamora. The Premier League champion has made a number of tributes to Jota following his death, including retiring his No. 20 jersey. Liverpool supporters began to applaud Jota when Sunday's game reached the 20-minute mark and that applause quickly erupted into cheers as new signing Jeremie Frimpong scored to put the Merseyside club 2-1 ahead. New recruit Hugo Ekitike had put Liverpool ahead inside four minutes after he and record signing Florian Wirtz combined beautifully before the Frenchman produced a superb finish. But Palace deservedly levelled in the 17th minute, Jean-Philippe Mateta sending Alisson the wrong way from the penalty spot after Virgil van Dijk brought down Ismaila Sarr. Frimpong then put Liverpool ahead again minutes later. The Eagles posed a threat on the counter and kept themselves in the game, although Ekitike spurned two decent chances to extend Liverpool's lead in the early stages of the second half. Palace's England forward Eberechi Eze then tested Alisson with a low shot before the Londoners equalised again with 13 minutes to play, Sarr slotting past the onrushing Alisson. Palace nearly grabbed a winner at the end, with Mac Allister perhaps fortunate to have a VAR referral for handball in the box go his way before Justin Devenny nearly scored in added time. Devenny scored the winning spot kick to give Palace the spoils after Mohamed Salah ballooned the Reds' first penalty and Dean Henderson then saved efforts from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott. 'I love it, I love the big moments, I love being in that pressure moment,' said Henderson, who also saved an Omar Marmoush penalty as Palace won the FA Cup, their first major trophy, against Manchester City in May. Palace's celebrations last season soon turned into a court battle for the club after they were demoted from the second-tier Europa League to the third-tier UEFA Conference League. European soccer's governing body found Palace in breach of multi-club ownership regulations because of their ties to French club Lyon through American businessman John Textor. - with AP

Dropping big cash on a running back who gets sidelined with injury early or investing heavily in a tight end who struggles to find his role in a new offensive scheme can quickly leave coaches scrambling to recover.
