NASCAR adds an optional caution flag in latest effort to make its All-Star Race interesting
NASCAR announced the format for the 2025 edition of the race on Wednesday and this year's iteration includes an optional caution flag that can be thrown before lap 220 of the 250-lap race.
The caution is a 'promoter's caution' and 'will be in the mix to reshape the race's complexion,' according to the release on NASCAR's website. The caution has to be thrown before lap 220, but can't be thrown after lap 200 if a caution for a wreck or debris happens after that lap.
Simply put, the optional caution has been added in an attempt to save what could be a boring race. The May 18 race is at the 0.625-mile North Wilkesboro Speedway. The quality of short-track racing in the Cup Series has declined precipitously since the current car was introduced in 2022 because of its low horsepower and higher downforce characteristics.
With a high likelihood of a boring race with difficult passing, the caution could be used to bunch the field in the hopes of an exciting late restart.
'The NASCAR All-Star Race continues to evolve as one of the most fun and innovative events on our calendar,' NASCAR vice president John Probst said in a statement. 'Returning to historic North Wilkesboro Speedway for the third year in a row allows us to honor our sport's roots while pushing the envelope with fresh competitive elements. The introduction of the Manufacturer Showdown brings a new layer of intensity and pride for our OEM partners, and fans can expect even more strategy, teamwork and drama on race day.'
That manufacturer showdown will include an equal number of Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota teams. The automaker with the lowest total finish among its cars will win the competition.
The optional caution is the latest gimmick among many in recent All-Star Race history. Previous All-Star races have featured option tires and final restart orders calculated based on a driver's average finish in the earlier stages. The continued attempts to make the All-Star Race relevant underscore that the race might have outlived its usefulness and that NASCAR could be better served with an off weekend for its teams instead of a race featuring participants who race each other in 36 points events per season.
The 250-lap race is also 50 laps longer than the 2024 race was. Drivers who won a race in 2024 or 2025, have won an All-Star Race before or who have won a Cup Series title before are automatically entered into the event. The drivers who don't fit that criteria will race each other in a 100-lap qualifying race earlier in the day. The top two finishers from that race will qualify for the main event along with the driver who received the most votes from fans to compete in the All-Star Race.

Sure, These Comics Can Make You Laugh. But Can They Hit a Jump Shot?
It took a moment for Dan Yang to register exactly whose fist he had bumped one Sunday afternoon earlier this year. Mr. Yang, a comedian, was lacing his sneakers before his weekly pickup basketball game, nonchalantly greeting the other players as they entered the gym. He extended a pound to Ben Marshall, a writer and performer for 'Saturday Night Live,' then did the same to a newcomer in a Hawaiian shirt shuffling a few steps behind. 'But I did a double take,' Mr. Yang said, 'because it was Adam Sandler.' Whether he knew it or not, Mr. Sandler had joined these hoopers in their happy place: a musty, subterranean gym where New York's buzzing comedy scene and pickup basketball underworld collide. This weekly, invitation-only session, known simply as the Sunday Game, is populated almost entirely by professional funny people from all corners of the comedy landscape — stand-up comedians on their way up, comics past their primes and, as in the case of Mr. Sandler, industry A-listers. EV Sales Are Exploding on Carvana With These 3 Models Leading the Way
EV Sales Are Exploding on Carvana With These 3 Models Leading the Way originally appeared on Autoblog. Nearly one in 10 Carvana sales are electric vehicles in Q2 2025 Carvana has been making headlines over the past couple of years with its significant stock rebound, but fewer may be aware of its noteworthy gains in electric vehicle (EV) sales during the same period. EVs accounted for nearly one in 10 Carvana sales during Q2 this year, a surge jump-started by an expanded inventory. More specifically, EV and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales increased from 2.3% of Carvana's retail unit sales to 9% between Q2 2023 and Q2 2025, the company's highest mix to date. While SUVs have passed sedans and hatchbacks as the dominant EV and PHEV purchase types over the past two years, Tesla's Model 3 was Carvana's top-selling battery electric vehicle (BEV) model during Q2. Tesla's Model Y and Model S took second and third place in top BEV sales, followed by Chevrolet's Bolt EV and Nissan's Leaf. On the PHEV side, Jeep's Wrangler Unlimited 4xe, Wrangler 4xe, and Grand Cherokee 4xe ranked first, second, and third in sales. Chrysler's Pacifica Hybrid and Chevrolet's Volt filled out the rest of the top five PHEVs. From Q2 2023 to Q2 2025, Carvana's electric and PHEV unique make/model count grew from about 55 and 40, respectively, to over 90 and 85. In terms of percentage growth, the retailer offered 66% more EV make/model combinations in Q2 2025 than in Q2 2023, and PHEV options doubled over the same period. SUVs were the most preferred class for EV and PHEV Carvana customers, followed by sedans and hatchbacks. In Q2 2025, nearly 44% of all Carvana EV and PHEV sales were SUVs, up from 24% during Q2 2023. Christina Keiser, Executive Vice President of Strategy at Carvana, said in a release: 'Last quarter, nearly 1 in 10 vehicles we sold was an EV or PHEV – a significant shift from just a couple of years ago. The widening selection of electrified SUVs has been especially powerful, offering buyers greater variety in one of the most sought-after body styles.'Amazon's car market ambitions don't stop at Slate Auto Amazon appears eager to follow in the footsteps of Carvana's recent success with the expansion of its Autos platform at the start of August, which now includes certified pre-owned and used listings. The platform's listings are currently limited to Los Angeles, with plans to expand to additional cities across the U.S. in the upcoming months. Amazon Autos previously just sold new Hyundai vehicles, but participating Los Angeles dealers can now list non-Hyundai units. Fan Jin, global leader of Amazon Autos, echoed some of Carvana's sentiments: 'This expansion is driven by strong interest from our dealer partners. By including certified pre-owned and used vehicles, we're meeting dealer demand for broader online reach while offering customers a wider selection of high-quality vehicles.' Final thoughts Despite EV sales being mixed during 2025, the segment's growth on Carvana, including PHEVs, is playing a central role in supporting the online retailer's comeback after a stock crash lasting from 2022 to 2024. The upcoming expiration of the $4,000 federal EV tax credit on September 30 is likely to impact this growth. Still, demand should remain strong, as COX Automotive predicts that 90% of all vehicle shoppers will have an EV on their list by Sales Are Exploding on Carvana With These 3 Models Leading the Way first appeared on Autoblog on Aug 15, 2025 This story was originally reported by Autoblog on Aug 15, 2025, where it first appeared.
