Owen Farrell to captain Lions against First Nations and Pasifika XV
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Owen Farrell will lead the British and Irish Lions in their last midweek game of the Australian tour on Tuesday against the First Nations and Pasifika XV in Melbourne.
It will be the 20th time Farrell has played for the Lions and his first starting appearance since being drafted into the 2025 squad late as injury cover by his father Andy Farrell, the head coach.
The former England captain went on as a second-half replacement against the AUNZ invitational XV on July 12 in his first game since early May. It'll be the first time on four tours that he'll be captaining the Lions in a game.
The Lions are 6-0 so far on the tour Down Under, including a 27-19 victory over the Wallabies in the first test at Brisbane on Saturday night.
Leading into the test series, the Lions beat Super Rugby franchises Western Force,Queensland Reds, Waratahs and Brumbies and an Australia-New Zealand invitational XV.
After the First Nations and Pasifika XV game, the Lions will turn their attention back to trying to clinch the test series in Melbourne on Saturday night. The third test is in Sydney on Aug. 2.
Owen Farrell will play at inside center in a midfield partnership with Jamie Osborne of Ireland.
Scotland scrumhalf Ben White will combine with England flyhalf Fin Smith in the halves.
Blair Kinghorn will return from injury to play fullback in an all-Scotland back three with Darcy Graham and Duhan van der Merwe.
Jac Morgan, the only Welshman left in the 44-man squad, will start on the blindside flank in the tour game in a backrow that also includes young England No. 8 Henry Pollock.
Three days after being involved in the 23-man squad for the first test, backrower Ben Earl and inside backs Alex Mitchell and Marcus Smith will sit on the bench for the tour game. Garry Ringrose is returning from injury to take a spot on the replacements bench.
Andy Farrell said the match gave all Lions players 'another opportunity to put their hand up for selection for the final two tests.'
'The coaches' minds are open when it comes to selection, they have to be with so many players performing and pushing for places.'
The First Nations and Pasifika squad was selected from players with Indigenous, Fijiian, Samoan, Tongan, Maori and Cook Islands heritage and will be guided by Toutai Kefu, who won a World Cup with Australia and is head coach of Tonga.
Flyhalf Kurtley Beale, who played for Australia against the Lions in the 2013 series, will lead the team which also includes Wallabies contenders Taniela Tupou, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Seru Uru, Filipo Daugunu and Andy Muirhead.

Sam Stosur has announced the birth of her second child with partner Liz, sparking a flood of congratulatory messages for the Aussie tennis champion. Stosur took to Instagram on Wednesday night to announce the arrival of a baby girl called Emmeline Grace. "And beautiful chaos reigns once again," Stosur wrote alongside a photo of the new bub. "Evie is beyond happy to have a little sister and we are over the moon. We love you so much little Emmy." Aussie tennis great Rennae Stubbs led the well-wishes, writing: "Just another gorgeous baby girl for me to love endlessly! Emmy your Auntie Nae Nae can't wait to meet you!! Sam and Liz, I'm so happy for you both and Evie, you're going to be the best big sis ever! Love you all." Retired Russian tennis player Elena Vesnina wrote: "She is precious. Congratulations Sam!!!" While Aussie player Maddison Inglis commented: "So beautiful!!!! Can't wait to meet her." Fellow Aussie great Alicia Molik added: "Congrats Sam Liz and Evie." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Samantha Stosur (@samstosur) Stosur and Astling had their first daughter Evie five years ago. On that occasion it was Astling who carried Evie, but this time around it was Stosur who gave birth to Emmy. Stosur is a legend of Australian tennis, famously winning the US Open singles title in 2011 when she beat Serena Williams on her home court. She reached World No.4 in singles that same year, and was World No.1 in doubles in 2006. She also won six grand slam titles in doubles - four in women's and two in mixed - including the Australian Open mixed title in 2005 and women's title in 2019. The 41-year-old is now the captain of Australia's Billie Jean King Cup team, helping mentor some of the country's best young talent. Sam Stosur's brave move after keeping relationship secret Stosur has been in a relationship with Astling since 2016, but she admitted she was initially too scared to go public because of what the reaction would be like. After she won the 'Spirit of Tennis' award at the Newcombe Medal ceremony in 2019, she realised she wanted to show her partner the proper recognition she deserved, but hadn't done so in her acceptance speech. 'I was in the car park at the end of the night and something just didn't feel right because I'd thanked all these people who were obviously very, very important to me, but not my partner,' she said at the time. 'And she is a huge part of what I've been able to do. And who I am now. "And that just didn't sit well with me. And I thought, 'Do you know what? Bugger this, I just want to thank her and I want to do this'. So that's why I put it on Instagram. As you get older and you're more mature and you reflect more on things and I thought, you know what, this is who I am.' You've just accepted this award, thanked all these people and the person who is really with you every single day, the person you have the most candid and open discussions with who you want to spend the rest of your life with, you can't mention them on stage?," she added. 'I was like, 'Nah, that's ridiculous, I don't want to do that anymore'. We were walking back to the car to come home and I said, 'I want to do this' and I think I hit send at 3am or something.' Don Garber on Lionel Messi's MLS All-Star Game absence: 'We should have known earlier'
MLS commissioner Don Garber says he is 'managing' whether star Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba could receive one-game suspensions for skipping the All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 23 in Austin, Texas. MLS released an updated All-Star roster about eight hours before the game, which didn't list both Inter Miami players, who stayed in South Florida instead of traveling for the exhibition. It's unclear when Inter Miami communicated Messi and Alba wouldn't travel for the match, leaving much of the conversation on the day of the exhibition around whether MLS would suspend its biggest star despite his massive workload during the 2025 season. Inter Miami has not responded to multiple requests from USA TODAY Sports this week seeking comment on Messi's All-Star absence. 'Yeah, we should have known earlier. We should have addressed it earlier. No doubt about that,' Garber said during his midseason press conference before the All-Star Game at Q2 Stadium when asked by USA TODAY Sports why an announcement of Messi's absence didn't come earlier in MLS All-Star week. Garber believes the MLS All-Star Game is a 'real priority' for players, fans and team owners and executives, who all convened in Austin to discuss several issues like altering the MLS calendar, improving rosters and the MLS/Apple TV partnership before the match. Garber also said he was told Messi and Alba did not practice as Inter Miami held a training session on Wednesday ahead of their next match against first-place FC Cincinnati on Saturday, July 26. An announcement on a possible suspension for Messi and Alba could come as early as Thursday, July 24. 'Miami has had a schedule that is unlike any other team. Most of our teams had a 10-day break. Miami hasn't. We had Leo playing 90 minutes in almost all the games that he's played. We have to manage through that as a league. [At] the same time, we do have rules, and we have to manage through that as well,' Garber said. 'So, we would have loved to have Leo here. We'd have loved to have every player that was selected for the All-Star team here. And after this All-Star Game, we'll figure out what needs to happen this weekend.' Messi, the Argentine World Cup champion, has played every minute for Inter Miami during a nine-game stretch lasting 35 days, from the FIFA Club World Cup opener on June 14 to the club's last match on July 19. Overall, Messi has played more than 2,000 minutes in 22 of 23 matches since April 2 with his only game off on April 30. Inter Miami has also played more games than any club in MLS with 34 matches across all competitions in 2025, excluding five preseason matches played in Las Vegas, Peru, Panama, Honduras and Tampa, Florida. They have played 21 matches during the MLS regular season, while other clubs have played 23 or 24 matches. They've also played seven matches in the Concacaf Champions Cup and four matches in the Club World Cup. 'I was told this morning that neither Jordi or Messi practiced today. Jordi came off with an injury in the last game, and we'll have to manage through what Miami is going to say about that,' Garber added. Messi, 38, was the oldest player named an MLS All-Star in 2025. He joined Inter Miami in June 2023, and won MLS MVP in 2024 despite missing the 2024 All-Star Game and two months due to his Copa America ankle injury. Inter Miami is in ongoing negotiations to re-sign Messi, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the 2025 season. Along with addressing the impact bought to MLS by David Beckham, the former L.A. Galaxy star and Inter Miami co-owner, Garber said 'MLS wouldn't be today what it is today with Leo Messi, either.' 'I don't think any of us realized what impact this player would have on our league, on our global exposure, on our credibility, on creating the thrills and just unique experiences that he's done over just the last couple of weeks, scoring multiple goals in multiple games, playing 90 minutes over the last four or five games, not wanting to come out of the game,' Garber said of Messi. 'He's an incredible competitor, and he's performing at a really high level. So, we are perceived very differently globally, because Leo Messi is in our league.' Sharks 'error' that could see Blayke Brailey join QLD Origin players at rival club
The Cronulla Sharks have been called out over a 'grave error' around Blayke Brailey that could see the star hooker join the Perth Bears as one of the club's first marquee signings. Queensland Origin stars Cameron Munster and Tino Fa'asuamaleaui have also emerged as the main targets for Mal Meninga's Bears in what could be a massive coup for the NRL's newest franchise when they enter the competition in 2027. Brailey still has one more year left on his current deal with the Sharks but will be free to negotiate with rival clubs on November 1 if he doesn't agree an extension with Cronulla before then. However, it's understood contract talks between Brailey and the Sharks have hit an impasse, with the player's representatives wanting a five-year extension and Cronulla reportedly only offering him three years on top of his current deal. The situation has left the door open for Perth to pounce on Brailey, who has emerged as the NRL's most in-form hooker and a future NSW Origin star. The Sharks No.9 is outperforming Origin hookers Harry Grant and Reece Robson, and Fox League's James Hooper says Cronulla's delay in agreeing an extension could cost them. 'The black, white and blue have made a grave error. They've just been a little slow out of the gates, and I'd even go as far to say they have probably lowballed him,' Hooper told NRL 360 on Wednesday night. 'If he's available come November 1, I'd suspect many clubs, possibly someone like the Perth Bears, would pay up to $1 million to try and land his signature. Because you can build a club around him.' League journalist Michael Caryannis described Brailey as 'the most in-form player of the competition' and said the Sharks will be desperate to tie him down to the club as soon as possible. "He's a Shire boy, he's a (club) junior, he wants to stay and I think they'll get the deal done," he told SEN radio on Thursday. "But they (Cronulla) have just got to be careful that if it gets to November 1, another club will offer him $1 million and the Sharks won't get to that." Hooper says he doesn't think Cronulla's offer for Brailey is 'anywhere near where it needs to be', considering he would almost certainly command a seven-figure sum if he hit the open market. 'I'd say it's around $650,000, something like that. I don't think it's anywhere near where it needs to be,' Hooper said. RELATED: Kevvie vows to act as three stars consider walking away from Kangaroos Madge spills family detail that has Walsh and Broncos primed for finals Panthers fans divided after Ivan Cleary forced to axe grand final hero Maroons stars emerge as marquee targets for Perth Bears Titans skipper Fa'asuamaleaui has links to Meninga, who signed him at the Gold Coast and coached him at the Kangaroos. Tino is on a long-term deal at Gold Coast worth around $1.2 million per year but has clauses in his contract that enable him to negotiate with rival clubs on November 1, which works in favour of Meninga's Bears. The Maroons star is settled with his family in Queensland though, but has asked the Titans to outline their vision for the future after the club's well-publicised struggles in 2025 that look set to cost Des Hasler his coaching job. Perth would probably have to offer Tino a massive deal worth upwards of $1.4 per season to prise him away from the Gold Coast, but it would be a huge coup if Meninga could pull off the marquee signing. The Perth coach is also said to have Queensland skipper Munster firmly in his sights, but a move for the Maroons Origin hero is slightly more complicated. The Melbourne five-eighth still two years remaining on his Storm contract after this season, and would need to be granted an early release if he wanted to join Perth. Munster is also settled in Melbourne and it would take a similarly massive offer to entice him to join the Bears.
