Google brings AI Mode to Search in India: How it works and what it offers
Google has rolled out its AI-powered search feature, AI Mode in Search, in India from June 24. Already in testing in the US, the feature is now available in India as a Labs experiment. Initially offered in English, AI Mode aims to change the way people use search by accepting longer, more complex questions and returning AI-generated answers backed by links to credible sources, Google said.
What is Google's AI Mode in Search
Powered by Google's multimodal AI model (Gemini 2.5), AI Mode in Search allows users to speak a query, upload an image, or snap a photo using Google Lens and ask questions based on what they see. This includes practical use cases such as identifying a plant and asking how to care for it or uploading an image of a household item to ask how to fix it.
Available on the Google app for both Android and iOS, AI Mode also pulls in data from Google's Knowledge Graph along with real-time local and shopping information to offer more relevant answers.
Google's AI Mode in Search: How it works
Google said its AI Mode in Search is designed to tackle complex, multi-step questions that would normally require several individual searches. Whether it's comparing smartphones, planning a trip, or understanding how to complete a home improvement task, the tool uses the multimodal AI model to provide rich summaries with follow-up prompts and links for further reading.
For instance, instead of searching multiple times for indoor play ideas, a question like 'How can I keep my 4 and 7-year-old kids active indoors without spending much?' can yield detailed, practical suggestions in one go.
According to Google, early users are already asking questions that are two to three times longer than traditional queries, indicating a shift towards more natural and exploratory search behaviour.
Behind the scenes, AI Mode uses a method known as 'query fan-out', breaking down a single complex query into parts and running simultaneous searches across the web. This helps deliver more detailed and complete responses than standard keyword-based searches.

MoSPI gets real with artificial intelligence: Surveys to use chatbots
The statistics ministry is integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations, with AI-enabled chatbots becoming part of key surveys, to provide accurate and up-to-date data to policymakers to help them make evidence-based policy decisions, the minister said. "To facilitate self-compilation by enterprises in the web-portal based Capex survey, an AI-powered chatbot has been integrated into the portal," Rao Inderjit Singh, minister of state (independent charge) for statistics and programme implementation, told ET. "This chatbot assists respondents by providing guidance on the concepts used across various sections of the survey questionnaire," he explained. The Capex survey tracks capital expenditure trends of private enterprises. The ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI) uses AI and machine learning-enabled chatbots for the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE) as well. It is also introducing new surveys and updating existing ones to better reflect present-day economic and social realities, Singh said. The idea is to leverage technology to provide timely data to help the government bring in policies to improve quality of life of Indians and realise Viksit Bharat 2047. The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) methodology was revamped in January. Under the new framework, reports are released monthly, with rural data included in quarterly releases. Annual reports will follow the calendar year rather than the earlier July-June cycle. "The updated PLFS design will allow (with state participation) generation of annual district level estimates for most districts across India. It is also planned to release ASUSE results quarterly instead of annually," Singh said. The MoSPI is set to launch two new surveys from July - National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) and Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey (DTES). NHTS aims to assess the spatial origin destination matrix for different transportation modes and influencing factors affecting the mode, destination choice, the price elasticity of travel demand by mode. The railway ministry and the government will use this data for transport planning, Singh said. DTES will gather information on trip purpose, mode of transport, accommodation, final destination within the country, and tourism-related expenditure.

Evolving from being online learning platform to AI-powered one: Udemy CEO
Hugo Sarrazin, chief executive officer of Nasdaq-listed skills development platform Udemy believes that artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing in a fundamental shift in the way online learning is delivered. In his first media interaction since he took over the role in March, he tells Shivani Shinde in Mumbai about AI in learning, and how significant a market India is for the company. Edited excerpts: How is AI impacting online learning and how is it different compared to a few years ago? Online learning is a very interesting space. It was a great innovation 15 years ago — it changed access, allowed us to reach remote villages around the world, and created an economy for instructors. But it didn't really change the modality — how people learn. At best, it was only as effective as a large classroom setting. What excites me now is that AI represents a turning point. With AI, we can finally change the learning modality. It allows us to personalise the learning experience, and that's a massive opportunity. How does AI impact Udemy? Udemy is a marketplace that brings together learners and creators. On the learner's side, we're evolving from being just an online learning platform to becoming an AI-powered reskilling and upskilling platform. That may sound like a small shift, but it represents a major transformation. We're no longer just offering content — we're building complete learning journeys with assessments, personalised learning paths, labs, videos, and even role plays. AI powers all of this. In fact, we have one of the largest AI-powered role play offerings in the industry. On the content creation side, AI has unlocked a wide range of tools — whether generating images, designing curricula, or translating content. We're focused on simplifying the entire workflow for instructors, making it much easier for them to create high-quality content. What are some of the trends you are seeing from learners on Udemy? Obviously, everybody wants to know how to use GenAI, prompt engineering and ChatGPT, but more importantly companies are asking us to create some basic AI fluency for everybody in organisations. We are having this conversation in India as well, where this AI is now going across the IT department. Second is tool-specific queries, like how one uses Excel with AI or Adobe and others. But surprisingly, there is also a whole category around softer skills. In the age of AI, how do I become a leader or what is my role as a leader? How significant is India as a market for Udemy? India is a very important market for us. We have about 17 million learners and 9,000 instructors here, and offer around 24,000 courses in Indian languages like Hindi, Tamil, Urdu, and more. Our offerings are tailored to local needs — both for individuals and large enterprises. India is a country that deeply values education. We see strong ownership of learning journeys, especially on the individual side. For example, we recently launched the 'Career Accelerator' programme, which helps learners take charge of their careers. There's a stronger signal from India than many other markets, largely due to this culture of learning. We're also seeing growing demand for skilling and upskilling —some of it coming from gaps in traditional university education, which often doesn't cover fast-evolving, job-relevant skills. Since Udemy is a marketplace, we're able to provide access to the latest, in-demand content, helping learners stay ahead. Interestingly, in India our corporate and individual users are equal. How are you different compared to competitors? Since we are a marketplace, what we offer is better. We are early to publish. Second differentiator is that we are becoming more than an online education company, or a reskilling company. Hence, the experience is more complete. Some of the others just give content. With Career Accelerators, we are personalising experience. Two, we are going to continue to localise. We have recently partnered with Mumbai Indians. We are looking for ways to create ties so that we can kind of talk to learners and people in a way that is adapted to their requirements. Three, we are going to recruit instructors, as we need to cover more Indian languages. We are well positioned to do that. The other area is partnerships with entities locally. That is another area we are looking at.

US judge rules Anthropic's use of books for AI training is fair use: All you need to know
A US federal judge has ruled that Anthropic's use of copyrighted books to train its artificial intelligence system falls under fair use, but found the company in breach of copyright law for storing pirated digital copies of millions of titles. The decision, issued late on Monday by District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco, marks a significant development in ongoing legal battles over how AI companies use copyrighted material. The lawsuit, brought by authors Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson, alleges that Anthropic used pirated versions of their works without permission or compensation to develop its Claude large language model. Filed as a proposed class action last year, the case is among several facing AI developers, including OpenAI, Meta, and Microsoft, by authors and publishers over the unauthorised use of creative works in training datasets. Judge Alsup sided with Anthropic on the central claim, ruling that the company's use of the books during AI training was 'exceedingly transformative' and therefore protected under the doctrine of fair use. He wrote, 'Like any reader aspiring to be a writer, Anthropic's LLMs trained upon works not to race ahead and replicate or supplant them, but to turn a hard corner and create something different.' However, the judge drew a line at the company's storage of over seven million pirated books in a so-called 'central library,' which he said went beyond acceptable limits of fair use. He found this action constituted copyright infringement and scheduled a jury trial in December to determine potential damages. Under US copyright law, damages for wilful infringement can reach up to $150,000 per work. Anthropic, which is backed by tech giants Amazon and Alphabet, has yet to issue a statement on the ruling. In previous court filings, the company argued that its AI training methods were legally permissible and promoted innovation. It also asserted that the source of the training data, whether obtained from legitimate or pirated sources, was irrelevant to the issue of fair use. Judge Alsup rejected that argument, expressing scepticism over the necessity of using pirated materials. 'This order doubts that any accused infringer could ever meet its burden of explaining why downloading source copies from pirate sites that it could have purchased or otherwise accessed lawfully was itself reasonably necessary to any subsequent fair use,' he wrote. The ruling represents the first time a court has directly addressed the fair use defence in the context of generative AI, a legal area still largely unsettled. It highlights the growing tension between copyright holders and AI firms over how creative works are sourced and used in machine learning. The case will now proceed to trial in December, where a jury will determine how much Anthropic must pay for its unauthorised storage of copyrighted material. (With inputs from Reuters)
