broke away from the George VI Ice Shelf, one of the massive floating glaciers attached to the Antarctic Peninsula ice sheet.

'We seized upon the moment, changed our expedition plan, and went for it so we could look at what was happening in the depths below,' says expedition co-chief scientist Dr Patricia Esquete from the University of Aveiro, Portugal.
'We didn't expect to find such a beautiful, thriving ecosystem. Based on the size of the animals, the communities we observed have been there for decades, maybe even hundreds of years.'

Pausing their work in the Bellingshausen Sea, the team reached the site of the vacated iceberg on 25 January, becoming the first to investigate an area never before accessible to humans.
They carried out the first detailed study of the geology, physical oceanography and biology beneath such a large area once covered by a floating ice shelf. The ice that calved off of the sheet was approximately 510 square kilometres - exposing an equivalent area of

Using Schmidt Ocean Institute's
remotely operated vehicle
, ROV SuBastian, the team observed the deep seafloor for eight days and found flourishing ecosystems at depths of 1,300 metres.
Large corals and sponges were discovered supporting an array of animal life, including what the team suspect to be several new species - though it will take years to determine this.

Deep-sea ecosystems typically rely on nutrients from the surface slowly raining down to the seafloor, the Schmidt Ocean Institute explains.

However, these Antarctic ecosystems have been covered by 150-metre-thick ice for centuries, completely cut off from surface nutrients.
Ocean currents also move nutrients, and the team says that currents are a possible mechanism for sustaining life beneath the ice sheet. The precise process is still a mystery, however.

is a normal occurrence for ice shelves. But climate change is accelerating the process, causing the ice sheet to shrink over the last few decades.
'The ice loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet is a major contributor to sea level rise worldwide,' says expedition co-chief scientist Sasha Montelli of the UK's University College London (UCL).

Only occasional mutters among marine biologists break the thick silence. Somehow, this livestream of sea life in the South Atlantic has Argentines hooked. The researchers behind this remotely operated vehicle filming lifeforms 4,000 metres undersea told The Associated Press on Monday that they never expected their wonky deep-sea expedition to become such a social media sensation. The video feed has attracted more than 1.6 million views a day on YouTube, dominated TV news broadcasts and even sparked a national conversation about the defunding of Argentine science under libertarian President Javier Milei. 'It was a huge surprise for us,' said expedition leader Daniel Lauretta. 'It's something that fills our hearts because we want to spread the word.' Orange starfish and hairy crabs have viewers hooked Outfitted with high-definition cameras and state-of-the-art sensors, the roving robot captures the enigmatic organisms of Mar de Plata's submarine canyon with exceptional clarity and detail for the first time. The region, where the warm current from Brazil meets the cold current coming up from the Falkland Islands, is known for its little-studied biodiversity. In dives lasting around eight hours a day, the camera encounters an array of surprising creatures lurking in the inky depths off the coast of Buenos Aires: An orange starfish so bright it drew comparisons to Patrick of 'SpongeBob SquarePants' cartoon fame, a sea cucumber viewers nicknamed 'sweet potato', and a deep-sea crab that looked like a hairy spider. Often peaking at some 50,000 simultaneous viewers, the livestream from the deep-sea research vessel kicked off last week and runs until 10 August. Schmidt, the Schmidt Ocean Institute Foundation, use the vehicle to map the underwater gorge, collect samples and identify scores of new species at a depth below the reach of sunlight. 'Argentines are very passionate about everything that happens in Argentina,' said Georgina Valanci, 40, her eyes fixed on floating translucent fish while crocheting on Monday. 'I think it represents a bit of the pride that something like this is being done in our country.' Shining a light on slashed research funding Most Argentine researchers on the expedition come from Conicet, Argentina's leading scientific funding and research body. And the livestream is shining a light on the institute's work at a moment when its funding is under attack. President Milei has taken his bureaucracy-slashing chainsaw to Argentine research projects and grants, curbing science spending as a part of a broader drive to eliminate Argentina's chronic fiscal deficit and bring down inflation. State-backed science organisations have lost 4,000 positions in the last year and a half, a combination of layoffs, frozen contracts and resignations over poor working conditions and low pay. Conicet suffered a 21 per cent budget cut in real terms last year. Salaries for Conicet researchers have lost 35 per cent of their value. Many warn that the measures are setting off a brain drain. Seizing on the surge of public excitement about Conicet, researchers have called for a 48-hour nationwide strike on Wednesday to draw attention to their plight. Although Milei has not commented on the livestream, his allies have expressed disdain. 'They should livestream an offshore drilling operation instead,' said Alejandro Álvarez, an official in Milei's government, referring to growing crude production in Argentina's Vaca Muerta shale formation, an oil boom that Milei hopes can help revive the nation's crisis-stricken economy. 'It's a beautiful process of wealth creation and natural resource exploitation that will make Argentina greater." In the meantime, Argentines seem content to be mesmerised by orange starfish.

These mostly invisible pieces of plastic have been found everywhere from the top of mountains to the bottom of oceans, in the air we breathe and the food we eat. They have also been discovered riddled throughout human bodies, inside lungs, hearts, placentas and even crossing the blood-brain barrier. The increasing ubiquity of microplastics has become a key issue in efforts to hammer out the world's first plastic pollution treaty, with the latest round of UN talks being held in Geneva next week. The effects that microplastics and even smaller nanoplastics have on human health is not yet fully understood, but researchers have been working to find out more in this relatively new field. The most prominent study looking at microplastics in brains was published in the journal Nature Medicine in February. The scientists tested brain tissue from 28 people who died in 2016 and 24 who died last year in the US state of New Mexico, finding that the amount of microplastics in the samples increased over time. The study made headlines around the world when the lead researcher, US toxicologist Matthew Campen, told the media that they detected the equivalent of a plastic spoon's worth of microplastics in the brains. Campen also told Nature that he estimated the researchers could isolate around 10 grammes of plastic from a donated human brain -- comparing that amount to an unused crayon. Speculation 'far beyond the evidence' But other researchers have since urged caution about the small study. "While this is an interesting finding, it should be interpreted cautiously pending independent verification," toxicologist Theodore Henry of Scotland's Heriot-Watt University told AFP. "Currently, the speculation about the potential effects of plastic particles on health go far beyond the evidence," he added. Oliver Jones, a chemistry professor at Australia's RMIT University, told AFP there was "not enough data to make firm conclusions on the occurrence of microplastics in New Mexico, let alone globally". He also found it "rather unlikely" that brains could contain more microplastics than has been found in raw sewage -- as the researchers had estimated. Jones pointed out the people in the study were perfectly healthy before they died, and that the researchers acknowledged there was not enough data to show that the microplastics caused harm. "If (and it is a big if in my view) there are microplastics in our brains, there is as yet no evidence of harm," Jones added. The study also contained duplicated images, the neuroscience news website The Transmitter has reported, though experts said this did not affect its main findings. - 'Cannot wait for complete data' - Most of the research into the effects microplastics have on health has been observational, which means it cannot establish cause and effect. One such study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine last year, found that microplastics building up in blood vessels was linked to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke and death in patients with a disease that clogs arteries. There have also been experiments carried out on mice, including a study in Science Advances in January which detected microplastics in their brains. The Chinese researchers said that microplastics can cause rare blood clots in the brains of mice by obstructing cells -- while emphasising that the small mammals are very different to humans. A review by the World Health Organization in 2022 found that the "evidence is insufficient to determine risks to human health" from microplastics. However many health experts have cited the precautionary principle, saying the potential threat microplastics could pose requires action. A report on the health risks of microplastics by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health published this week ahead of the treaty talks said that "policy decisions cannot wait for complete data". "By acting now to limit exposure, improve risk assessment methodologies, and prioritise vulnerable populations, we can address this pressing issue before it escalates into a broader public health crisis," it added. The amount of plastic the world produces has doubled since 2000 -- and is expected to triple from current rates by 2060.
