Former Michelin-starred restaurant owner in Japan arrested after food poisonings
OSAKA: Members of a family who run a formerly Michelin-starred restaurant in western Japan were arrested on Monday (June 16) for ignoring an order to temporarily shut down the establishment after a spate of food poisonings, Kyodo News Agency reported.
Hirokazu Kitano, 69, along with his son Hirotoshi Kitano, 41, and his wife Noriko, 68, have all been involved in the operation of the traditional Japanese-style restaurant Kiichi in Kawachinagano, Osaka Prefecture. It is alleged they violated the Food Sanitation Act.
According to the prefectural government and other sources, the restaurant was handed a two-day business suspension order on Feb 15 after 33 customers experienced vomiting and diarrhoea following meals at the restaurant or after consuming "bento" boxed meals sold earlier that month.
Norovirus was detected in some of the people, which a local public health centre determined was linked to food poisoning.
Then, 23 more people who ate at the restaurant between Feb 22 and 24 fell sick and norovirus was again detected, prompting authorities to order the restaurant to close indefinitely from March 2.
Subsequent investigations found that the business had continued to sell bento boxes during the initial suspension order. - Bernama/Kyodo

EAIC: Penang DOF Committed To Improving Effectiveness Of MCS Management Enforcement
GEORGE TOWN, June 16 (Bernama) -- The Penang Department of Fisheries (DOF) will enhance monitoring aspects, standard operating procedures (SOP), and the effectiveness of MCS (Monitoring, Control & Surveillance) enforcement in the state's waters following recommendations from the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) regarding the issue of trawler incursions from Zone B to Zone A. Its director, Zarina Zainuddin, said her department acknowledges and takes the feedback seriously, and therefore several steps have been, are being, and will continue to be taken to address the issue. "This includes increasing the frequency of monitoring visits by management to enforcement bases to ensure tasks are carried out according to SOP and standing instructions, with two surprise inspections conducted on April 22 and July 26, 2024. "Additionally, periodic inspections are also conducted from time to time to ensure staff attendance, adherence to work ethics, and the execution of duties according to the Captain Order guidelines," she said in a statement today. She explained that internal audits of the Enforcement Log Management are also conducted continuously to ensure daily records are maintained according to regulations, along with improvements to the record-keeping system to enhance the transparency and orderliness of operational information. Additionally, Zarina said that her department also organised comprehensive SOP reinforcement courses and training involving all enforcement officers, in line with EAIC's recommendations to ensure understanding and compliance with regulations are continuously improved. "The review of the SOP regarding the acceptance of complaints accompanied by video evidence has been implemented to expedite and streamline the investigation process. The Penang DOF is now filing police reports and opening investigation papers for each complaint related to violations of the Fisheries Act 1985, specifically involving the encroachment of trawlers into Zone A. "Throughout last year, the Penang DOF received seven video-recorded complaints regarding the encroachment of fishing areas by trawler boats in Zones B1 and C. As a result, 13 trawlers were investigated, and enforcement actions were taken, including the issuance of fines amounting to RM6,000 fines and court charges," she said. She also said that the DOG detained seven tugboats in Zone C, with a total fine and fish auction proceeds amounting to RM41,200, while further actions such as the suspension of Vessel Licenses and Fishing Licences for one year, complete equipment seizure, a five-year prohibition on vessel transfer, and court charges have been carried out.

Fadhlina hits out at politicising students' squabble in Terengganu
PUTRAJAYA: Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has condemned the actions of some quarters who politicised the recent fight involving two students at a school in Terengganu. She also denied allegations linking the mother of one of the students involved as being related to her. "The slander linking one of the mothers of the students involved with me is irresponsible and malicious. I have never known the individual," she said in a statement here on Monday (June 16). Fadhlina said the Education Ministry through the Terengganu Education Department had taken action on this case in accordance with the Bullying and Misconduct Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) currently in force. As a follow-up step, she also instructed the ministry's Integrity Unit to conduct further investigations into the incident. "I am closely following the development of this issue and want it to be resolved immediately. The ministry does not compromise with bullying and other misconduct. Strict action must be taken against anyone who is guilty," she said. As reported by Sinar Harian, Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB) managing director, Syaiful Azmen Nordin, said the discovery of bodies is not an isolated incident but has occurred almost monthly since dredging and widening works began on Nov 1, 2022. 'So far, we have handed over more than 10 bodies to the police and fire department for further investigation,' he was quoted as saying. Aside from the grim finds, the team has also encountered severe pollution, having retrieved various heavy waste items such as refrigerators, lorry tyres, bed frames, mattresses, sofas and even motorcycles from the riverbed. 'I honestly don't understand how a fridge ends up in the river,' he said, describing the current level of pollution as severe and a challenge to the dredging efforts.
