Making room for Penang tourism
THIRTEEN new hotels have opened in Penang since August 2023 to meet growing demands of the state's tourism industry, with seven more expected to begin operations soon.
Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the 13 hotels had contributed 2,311 rooms to the state's capacity for visitors' accommodation.
The new rooms comprise 1,670 at 11 hotels in the northeast district, 298 at a southwest district hotel and 343 at a hotel in north Seberang Perai.

Wong was responding to a question from Heng Lee Lee (PH-Berapit) on the increase in hotel developments, at the state assembly sitting in George Town.
Meanwhile, state infrastructure, transport and digital committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said land reclamation of the 930ha Silicon Island, off Penang's southern coast, would take 10 to 15 years.
He said reclamation works, which had begun in September 2023, were being carried out in two phases.
Phase one involves the reclamation of 510ha while phase two covers 420ha.
'As of April 30 this year, 60ha of land, equivalent to 6.5% of the project, had been reclaimed,' he told the assembly.
In response to questions from Muhamad Kasim (PN-Telok Bahang), Zairil (PH-Tanjong Bungah) said no land acquisition was involved.
However, he said land acquisitions in Permatang Damar Laut would be needed for construction of phase one of the Pan Island Link 2A (PIL2A) highway connecting Batu Maung to Silicon Island.
'It involves 13 land lots, 17 residential houses, two business premises, one welfare home and one place of worship.
'The land acquisition process was approved by authorities on May 8 last year and gazetted on July 11 last year under Section 8 of Land Acquisition Act 1960,' he said.
Zairil disclosed that owners of the premises had received compensation based on valuations by the Valuation and Property Services Department.
'A majority of the stakeholders received compensation of over RM1.5mil for each lot of land.
'Three individuals received ex-gratia payments of RM43,500 each.
'The total compensation for land acquisition under PIL2A amounted to RM24,154,948.73, with ex-gratia payments totalling RM130,500,' he added.
Mohamad Kasim had asked about the land reclamation progress of Silicon Island, the number of residents involved in land or property acquisition and the compensation they received.
Silicon Island, previously known as Island A, is being developed by Silicon Island Development Sdn Bhd.
The developer also oversees the design and management of Phase 1 reclamation works via turnkey contractor SRS TC Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gamuda Bhd.

He said besides being determined to defend its six current seats, the party is also aiming to recapture Sri Tanjong and Elopura, whose representatives left to join Warisan, with an overall target of between eight and 10 seats. However, he added, this would depend on the party's strategy as seat negotiations and candidate selection have yet to be finalised. The DAP National Policy Director also confirmed he would not be contesting in PRN17, saying he wanted to focus on his duties as Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament and as a Deputy Minister at the Federal level. Moreover, Chan said, Tawau DAP had younger, capable leaders ready to be promoted. 'DAP has always had a team of new-generation leaders. I am already considered part of the veteran generation in Sabah and I will not be holding two seats at once. We (must) be fair,' he said. 'Sometimes it's said PH will contest 25 seats, sometimes 23. I don't know myself. Heated debate over 13MP housing budget
A WAR of words broke out between Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan and RSN Rayer regarding the housing budget for the Indian community under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Takiyuddin (PN-Kota Baru) questioned why there was none allocated for the Indian community, particularly estate workers without homes, under the plan. 'And since there is a master plan for Chinese new villages, I also want to ask why there is no master plan for the development of the Indian community, especially for the plantation workers, who we know do not have their own houses,' he said. Rayer (PH-Jelutong) stood up to interject, saying that Takiyuddin was factually wrong about the allocations for the Indian community. He then cited the Standing Orders against Takiyuddin for allegedly trying to mislead Parliament. Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah (BN-Paya Besar), who was standing in to chair the proceedings, reminded Rayer to respect the Standing Orders and to allow Takiyuddin to explain his remarks. Rayer then accused Takiyuddin of ignoring allocations in the 13MP, stating that funds would be provided to repair dilapidated homes for the Indian community. Takiyuddin denied Rayer's accusation, repeatedly saying: 'I never said that ... listen properly.' Takiyuddin said he had inquired about a development plan for the Indian community, particularly for estate workers without homes. Earlier, another commotion broke out when Rayer expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of action against Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang), who raised racial issues while linking them to the May 13, 1969 racial riots during the 13MP debate session last week. Awang then stood up to say that he had yet to receive the letter submitted by Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul regarding the matter. However, Johari said he would make a ruling after receiving a written explanation from Awang over the matter.

Mihas eyes stronger global reach

Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said Mihas 2025 will feature more than 2,300 booths across 14 industry clusters. 'These 14 clusters include education, Muslim-friendly hospitality and tourism, food technology and packaging, pharmaceutical and medical, franchise, Islamic art and crafts, and logistics. 'Mihas has continuously increased participation and footfall, which reflects the support from international partners,' he said during the Mihas foreign mission networking hi-tea at the Matrade exhibition hall yesterday. Reezal Merican said the achievement had helped them lead Mihas internationally. He said Matrade had launched Mihas in Dubai last year and would expand it to Shanghai this year. 'Hopefully next year, we will organise Mihas in the European region, where Malaysian halal businesses can showcase their businesses internationally. 'The global halal market is currently worth over US$3.5 trillion (RM14.8 trillion). It is expected to reach US$5 trillion (RM21.2 trillion) by 2030,' he added. Matrade deputy chief executive officer Abu Bakar Yusof said Mihas 2025 will feature a special Asean and Gulf Cooperation Council pavilion. 'The six GCC member states are experiencing rapid growth, making it timely for Malaysia to explore ways to contribute and create better market opportunities for businesses from both regions. 'Malaysia has sustained a strong position with more than 200 partners, and we are moving up in the ranks of trade globally,' he said. Abu Bakar also urged foreign traders to utilise the new Madani Digital Trade platform, an artificial intelligence-based system that helps match Malaysian halal exporters, especially small medium enterprises with international buyers to support genuine cross-border deals. Meanwhile, Matrade director of halal, food and beverage and agro-based section Yusram Yusof said Malaysia has led the overall global Islamic economy indicator ranking for 11 consecutive years in the halal industry. 'The halal industry stands in the top 10 among other industries, contributing RM161bil to this year's gross domestic product,' he said. Last year, Malaysia's halal exports were valued at RM61.8bil, marking a 15% increase from the previous year. 'The sector supports more than 350,000 jobs nationwide and is anchored by 14 halal parks, which have attracted RM3.8bil in investments and are home to over 300 companies. He also said Malaysia has come up with a comprehensive halal ecosystem. 'If there are good strategies in place, we can meet the target set by our Prime Minister to achieve RM80bil halal export,' he added. Recently, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan, said Malaysia hoped to achieve RM80bil halal export. Mihas 2025, themed 'Pinnacle of Halal Excellence', will be held from Sept 17 to 20 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre.
