Police suspects Maoist-miners nexus

Hans India18 hours ago
Bhubaneswar: Following the recent recovery of over 9 tonnes of explosives and 4,000 detonators from Kandhamal district, the Odisha police on Monday said it was suspecting a nexus between the Maoist groups and mining companies.
Additional Director General (ADG), Anti-Naxal Operation, Sanjeev Panda said the explosives recovered from Tumudibandha area on Saturday night resemble another dump of such materials from a Maoist camp in Gumma Reserve Forest last month, where 600 detonators of the same brand were recovered.
'We strongly suspect that the explosives being procured for mining explosion activities are getting diverted to the Maoists. There appears to be a nexus between them, and the police have been investigating the matter,' the ADG said. The materials were stored unlawfully and may have originated from commercial mining firms operating in the region, he said. A report from Phulbani said that Tumudibandha police seized explosive materials including 4,000 detonators, 276 kg of gelatin sticks, 100 kg of apex buster, 43 packets of wire and batteries. The police also seized two vehicles, Rs 4 lakh in cash and six mobile sets. Three persons were arrested in this connection, said SDPO of Balliguda Ramendra Prasad.
The explosive materials were seized while conducting a check at Rampur Square on the night of Independence Day, he said. Earlier this year, Maoists allegedly stole a large cache of explosives from a stone quarry in Sundargarh district. Joint combing operations by Odisha and Jharkhand forces and CRPF later recovered the stolen material from Saranda forest in the neighboring State.
The investigation is ongoing, with police examining procurement records and supply chains linked to mining operations in Kandhamal and surrounding districts, police said.

'Under this action, complaints were registered in 64 cases in July and 105 people were accused. As many as 956 accused persons have been arrested in 400 cases so far this year,' a statement from the Home Department, quoting Sahay, said. To return the valuables including the stolen goods seized from the accused in the state to their owners, the police department, in coordination with courts, has organised 761 events across the state in July under 'Tera Tujko Arpan' programme and goods worth over Rs 25 crore were returned to their owners. FIR against criminal for threatening & extorting farmer

Kolhapur: A criminal on police records was booked on Monday on the charge of threatening and extorting a farmer from Sangli's Retre Dharan village on Aug 1 while he was transporting cattle for sale. The farmer transporting four cows to Kolhapur for sale was stopped by the accused, who claimed to be gau rakshak, in the Shiroli police station area. "He falsely accused the farmer of heading to slaughter the cows and demanded Rs 1.5 lakh to let him go. The farmer paid part of the amount in cash and Rs 30,000 online, after which the accused allowed him to leave," an officer said. MLC Sadabhau Khot, president of Rayat Kranti Sanghatana that is part of the BJP-led alliance, visited the police station to register a complaint against the accused. "Several farmers have been intimidated by the accused and others, warning them not to file complaints or they would face harm or even murder. Given the accused's history as a criminal and the potential threat to witnesses, I personally oversaw the registration of the case," Khot said. The case under sections 351(2) and 352 has been registered. Sunil Gaikwad, assistant police inspector, said, "We have registered a non-cognizable offence now. We are going to charge the accused for extortion under Section 383 of BNS. We will arrest him once we get more details from the complainant."
