Intellectually disabled teen charged with murder
TANAH MERAH : A teenager with intellectual disability was charged in the magistrates' court here today with the murder of a senior citizen.
Tuan Izmal Firdaus Tuan Muda, 18, nodded after the charge was read to him before magistrate Tun Faez Fikhrie. No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
He was charged with murdering Shamsudin Mohamed, 60, at the side of the road next to a grocery store in Kampung Buluh, Gual Ipoh, here between 6pm and 6.30pm on June 19.
The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of not less than 30 to 40 years and a minimum whipping of 12 strokes, upon conviction.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Siti Hajar Mazlan while the accused was unrepresented.
The court set Sept 2 for mention of the case.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — Facing questions over actions against online sex work, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail today highlighted police's response towards 'swinging' activities and child sexual exploitation. Saifuddin said the police have recently uncovered a case where children as young as 12 were being exploited online to sell images of themselves. 'Some even dropped out of school because the income they were earning was higher than their parents' salaries,' Saifuddin said during Question Time here. Saifuddin said the ring started after a 12-year-old girl created a website with four of her friends, and a WhatsApp group where their child sexual exploitation materials were shared grew to 762 members. He did not state whether the members of the group involved adults or minors. However, he stressed that cases involving children could not be tackled by enforcement alone and required wider involvement. 'This shows how serious the issue is. When dealing with cases involving 12-year-olds, we must involve other agencies as well,' he said. Saifuddin was responding to Jerai MP Sabri Azit, who had asked whether the police are acting against 'swinger' — where consenting adults swap their partners, usually spouses, for sex. In reply, he said that depending on the circumstances, five laws may apply on such situations: the Penal Code, the Communications and Multimedia Act, the Sexual Offences Against Children Act (if minors are involved), the Film Censorship Act, as well as Shariah enactments. He cited a case in August 2024, where police from the D7 anti-vice and gambling prevention unit detected websites promoting such activities, which later led to a raid on a luxury condominium in Kuala Lumpur. 'Among those arrested were public and private university students, civil servants and foreigners. The case has since been charged under Section 372 of the Penal Code and is ongoing,' he said. Saifuddin added that while legislation and enforcement are important, building strong family and community values was equally necessary to address such crimes.

(Bernama pic) CYBERJAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's recent bust of a smuggling syndicate masterminded by several senior armed forces officials was greatly aided by the Johor regent's connections, says MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki. He said Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who is Tunku Mahkota Johor, had given his full cooperation in the matter, to help eradicate smuggling through the borders. 'We received a lot of information from Tunku Mahkota Johor's networking,' he said at an anti-bribery students' convention at Multimedia University here today. MACC recently arrested and remanded 10 people, including five senior armed forces officials and two online journalists for suspected involvement in a smuggling syndicate. The others were a company manager, an administrative assistant for the Malaysian Medical Association and an Indonesian woman. They were arrested in the Klang Valley in an operation by MACC with the aid of the police. The smuggled goods reportedly included drugs, cigarettes and other contraband from neighbouring countries, with an estimated monthly value of RM5 million. More than RM63,000 in cash, and drugs, weighing equipment, liquor and imitation firearms were seized.

GOF foils bid to smuggle 33,000kg of white rice into Kelantan

(PGA pic) PETALING JAYA : The General Operations Forces have seized 33,000kg of white rice, believed to have been smuggled from Thailand into Kelantan yesterday. GOF's Southeast Brigade commander Nik Ros Azhan Ab Rahman said a trailer carrying 660 sacks of rice was stopped in front of a school near Jeli, Kelantan, at 12.45am during Op Taring Bravo 4, Harian Metro reported. 'The seized goods have been handed over to the Kelantan branch of the National Rice Regulatory Division for further action. The case is being investigated under Section 20 of the Control of Padi and Rice Act 1994 (for unlawful possession of padi orrice),' he was quoted as saying. In a separate raid on Wednesday, GOF's Battalion 8 seized 20 boxes of Diamond Gold facial soap worth RM360,000 from a car at the Lan Bundle illegal jetty in Rantau Panjang during Op Taring Wawasan. Nik Ros said the 18-year-old driver was suspected of delivering the products to the local market. The case is being investigated under Section 7(1)(E) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984.
