Destructive protest: Five learners arrested for classroom fire in Gauteng

A fire broke out at Thuto-Lefa Secondary School in Munsieville, Krugersdorp, on Wednesday, destroying two mobile classrooms.
The Gauteng Department of Education said the fire broke out on school premises on Wednesday afternoon.
'It is alleged that the incident may be linked to learner dissatisfaction with recent timetable changes introduced by the school,' said Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education.
'The objective of this adjustment is to ensure the completion of the academic syllabus and to provide adequate revision time ahead of upcoming preliminary examinations.'
He said police are investigating circumstances surrounding this incident. Subsequently, five learners, four learners in Grade 10 and one in Grade 9 were arrested.
'It is deeply concerning that opposition to academic planning may have been expressed through such a destructive act,' said Mabona.

Meanwhile, Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane, has strongly condemned the incident.
'Burning a classroom is not a form of protest, it is a criminal act that robs learners of their right to quality education. We will not tolerate such destructive behaviour, and those responsible must face the full consequences of the law,' said Chiloane.
The Gauteng Department of Education said it will work with the school and relevant stakeholders to ensure that learning continues with minimal disruption.

Groenewald said that following a prison raid, they try to determine which officials were involved in smuggling contraband and disciplinary action is taken. 'Since I became the minister, 155 officials' services were ended with Correctional Services because they were part of contraband smuggling,' Groenewald said. 'We do identify the hotspots, and if you look at some annual statistics, more than 40,000 cellphones have been confiscated,' Groenewald said. He said that they are cleaning their facilities because the more contraband they can get rid of, the more proof they have that they are doing their job well. 'So we will continue with that, we will even increase the raids, and the people must understand that it is prohibited, and we will act accordingly,' Groenewald said. On overcrowding, Groenewald said they have admitted it is a huge problem. In Parliament, he has responded several times. They also account to the Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services in Parliament. 'Our main problem is actually when it comes to remand detainees. We have people in our facility who are awaiting trial for more than 10 years. There are six of them. Now that is part of the criminal justice system. There are ways, in terms of legislation, where we can request and go back to court, but it's not very successful,' Groenewald said. He also said they have about 3,000 remand detainees who could not afford the bail of R1,000 or less. 'There's a process trying to establish a bail fund where we can try to do that,' Groenewald said. Additionally, about 26,000 foreigners are in correctional facilities. Approximately 13,000 are remand detainees.

Addressing concerns about his recent MMC appointment in the context of these longstanding allegations and purported association with a 'Construction Mafia,' Zungu stated: 'My appointment as MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services was made by the Executive Mayor, following internal council deliberations. The Office of the Executive Mayor would be better placed to comment on this.' Providing context to his involvement with Citydev Construction, Zungu gave a nuanced account: 'In 2017, we were introduced to this private company by the then Ward Councillor of Ward 122, as they were undertaking bond housing in Lehae. I was the chairperson of the business forum at the time. Initially, I supplied materials for them and was later appointed as a social facilitator.' Zungu explained: 'We worked very well until I was elected Ward Councillor of 122 after the previous councillor passed away. I then resigned from the business forum to focus on my councillorship. Politics within the ANC then kicked in.' He concluded with a warning about internal party conflict: 'In short, all this has been a fabrication and is meant to tarnish my name from members within the ANC.' While the Hawks investigation has been handed to the Director of Public Prosecutions, no charges have been filed to date, and Zungu's legal status remains unchanged.
