No objection if Arvind Kejriwal's passport renewed for 10 years: Delhi court

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Wednesday said it had "no objection" if the passport of former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, an accused in the Delhi excise policy cases, was renewed for 10 years.
Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh passed the order in the alleged scam-related corruption and money laundering cases, being probed by the CBI and the ED respectively, considering that Kejriwal would have to take formal permission of the court before travelling abroad.
"Presently, the applicant is not seeking any permission to travel abroad, obviously as he may not be planning to travel abroad in the immediate near future, but that too cannot come in the way of granting permission to the applicant for renewal of the passport for complete 10 years.
After all the bail conditions already prescribes that the applicant shall not travel abroad without formal permission of court," the order said.
The judge added, "The applications preferred by Arvind Kejriwal for renewal of his passport is allowed and this court has 'no objection' if the passport ... of the applicant, namely, Arvind Kejriwal is renewed for 10 years as per rules."
Both the CBI and the ED opposed Kejriwal's plea.
While the ED said the renewal of passport should be not granted for a full 10 years, the CBI said the norms followed in different courts of CBI relating to such matters was that the renewal permission was granted for five years.
The judge, however, clarified that the order should not in any manner fetter the discretion of the passport authorities in its grant or refusal of the renewal under the Indian Passports Act and the relevant rules.
Kejriwal's counsel argued that his passport expired in 2018 and he has moved the application seeking its renewal for 10 years.
The money laundering case stems from the CBI's FIR, which was lodged after Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena recommended a probe into the alleged irregularities in the implementation of the policy.
According to the CBI and the ED, irregularities were committed while modifying the excise policy and undue favours were extended to the licence holders.
The Delhi government implemented the policy on November 17, 2021, and scrapped it by the end of September 2022 amid allegations of corruption.

SC stays trial against former Haryana IAS officer in Manesar land case
The Supreme Court has stayed trial proceedings against former Haryana IAS officer Rajeev Arora in the Manesar land deal, investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The former IAS officer had petitioned the apex court after his revision petition challenging his summoning by a special CBI court was dismissed by the Punjab and Haryana high court on May 15. A special CBI court had on December 1, 2020 ordered that the former IAS officer be summoned to face trial for committing offence under section 120-B read with 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the Manesar land matter. However, on a revision petition filed by Arora, the Punjab and Haryana high court on December 14, 2020 had stayed the operation and implementation of the order of the special CBI court. Rejecting the challenge to the special CBI court's December 1, 2020 order, the HC on May15 said it found no illegality or infirmity in the order passed by learned special CBI court in summoning the petitioners. An apex court bench headed by chief justice BR Gavai, however, on May 29 ordered that notice be issued to the respondents and 'proceedings qua the petitioner (Rajeev Arora) shall stand stayed till the next date of hearing.' During the trial court proceedings on Friday, Special CBI judge, Rajeev Goyal while referring to the apex court's order of May 29 ordered that proceedings against all the accused persons except Rajeev Arora shall commence. The special court in its June 6 order noted that it is, therefore, seen that all the accused except accused Dhare Singh, Kulwant Singh Lamba, DR Dhingra and Rajeev Arora, have been ordered to be charge-sheeted qua the offences as detailed in the order December 1, 2020. The court said that now arguments need to be advanced on charges in respect of accused Dhare Singh, Kulwant Singh Lamba and DR Dhingra. Learned defence counsels seek time to prepare the arguments. Learned senior public prosecutor Harsh Mohan Singh submits that charge-sheet may kindly be framed against the accused persons who have already been ordered to be charge-sheeted vide order dated December 1,2020. 'I am not able to accept the submission made by the senior public prosecutor as it will not be appropriate to frame charge-sheet before considering the case concerning framing of charges in respect of accused Dhare Singh, Kulwant Singh Lamba and DR Dhingra. In case, the court after hearing contentions of the said accused persons and senior public prosecutor for CBI, concludes that charges are required to be framed against said accused persons as well, then a consolidated charge-sheet qua all the accused persons shall be framed and in my opinion, it will be more appropriate if such a course is adopted, for framing charge-sheet in a piecemeal manner is not desirable. As such, to come up on July 10, 2025 for arguments on charge qua accused Dhare Singh, Kulwant Singh Lamba and DR Dhingra,'' ordered the special court.

Filmmaker Manish Gupta Booked For Stabbing Driver Over Salary Dispute: Report
Mumbai police filed an FIR against filmmaker Manish Gupta after his driver Mohammad Lashkar accused him of stabbing him during an argument over pending salary on June 5. Mumbai police have filed an FIR against filmmaker Manish Gupta after his driver accused him of stabbing him during an argument over pending salary. The incident reportedly took place on the evening of June 5 at Gupta's residence in the Sagar Sanjog building, located in Versova. The police registered the case the next day, on June 6. The complainant, 38-year-old Mohammad Lashkar, had been working as Gupta's driver for the past three years, drawing a monthly salary of ₹23,000. According to the FIR, Lashkar often received his salary late. In May, his salary was not paid at all, and on May 30, he was fired from the job. On June 3, Lashkar called Gupta and asked for the pending amount. Gupta allegedly told him that he would be paid only if he returned to work. Believing this, Lashkar resumed work on June 4. However, he still did not receive his salary. The situation turned violent the next day. Around 8:30 p.m. on June 5, while both were at Gupta's Versova office, Lashkar once again asked about his pending salary. This reportedly angered Gupta, who began shouting at him. He then allegedly took a kitchen knife and stabbed Lashkar on the right side of his torso. Despite being injured, Lashkar managed to leave the office and called out for help. A nearby driver and the building's watchman came to his aid. Lashkar then took an auto-rickshaw to Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle West, where he received treatment. Once his condition stabilised, Lashkar went to the Versova police station and filed a complaint. Based on his statement, Manish Gupta was booked under sections 118(2), 115(2), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These include charges of causing grievous hurt using a dangerous weapon and using insulting words likely to cause a breach of peace. So far, no arrest has been made. The investigation is ongoing. Manish Gupta is known for directing films such as Rahasya and The Stoneman Murders. As of now, he has not made any public statement about the incident. Filmmaker , who is known for his work in movies like 'Section 375,' 'Rahasya,' and '420 IPC,' has allegedly been booked for stabbing his driver with a knife under Section 118 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to a PTI report. Reportedly, the incident took place earlier this morning, following a dispute over the driver's salary. The injured driver, Rajibul Lashkar (38), is undergoing treatment currently for his injuries. A mid-day report states that the Versova police have confirmed the incident and are currently probing to know the truth. "When they contacted the filmmaker regarding the matter, he termed all the allegations as false and fabricated and stated that he is willing to cooperate with the investigation. The police are checking CCTV footage to verify the facts,' said an officer from Versova Police Station, as reported by mid-day. Reportedly, when attempts were made to reach out to Manish Gupta, he directed the reporter to speak with his lawyer, Dinesh Tiwari, who said all claims against the filmmaker have no ground and are just a scheme to make money. He said, 'The allegation against my client Mr. Manish Gupta, is baseless and false, and is nothing but an attempt to extort money from my client. The complainant Mr. Rabijul has a past criminal record, he has previously defrauded a bank and has a criminal case pending against him. The complainant Mr. Rabijul, guided by many of his relatives/friends, has fabricated the entire issue as a pressure tactic to extort money from my client.
