New officers sworn in to serve North Las Vegas, Clark County School District
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — New officers took their oaths Thursday, set to join two Las Vegas valley police departments.
The North Las Vegas Police Department (NLVPD) and Clark County School District Police Department (CCSDPD) welcomed their newest recruiting class Thursday at CSN's Horn Theatre. More than a dozen new officers earned their badge and took the oath to protect and serve.
'It's really a huge accomplishment,' said Ucia Alfaro, a new NLVPD officer. 'We've been waiting for 6 months, you know. It's paid off. We're here.'
'A lot of us weren't sure if we were going to get here because of how tough it is, but we all pulled through, and we're here now,' said Ernest Campos, another new officer. 'After six months of excruciating work, it's great. It all paid off in the end. It was hard, but right now, standing here, it feels great.'
Ucia Alfaro was the only woman in her recruiting class. An 11-year Army reservist serving the country, Alfaro will now serve her community.
'They tell me 'You're one of the boys now, ' so it's really nice to hear that from them,' said Alfaro. 'They definitely accepted me and invited me into their group.'
The new recruits went through 24 weeks of training that they say pushed them to their limits physically and mentally, including training involving tasers and 'OC' or oleoresin capsicum, also known as pepper spray.
'I would rather get OC sprayed than get tasered again,' said Officer Campos. 'The taser really put me out. I was on the floor, and it hurt for a few days.'
They also completed more than 1,000 hours of instruction in the basic knowledge, skills, and abilities required of a police officer, as well as advanced subjects such as tactics, use of firearms, and emergency vehicle operations.
Officials say the recruits include Spanish speakers, veterans, and Las Vegas natives. Those recruits say they strive to reflect the community they serve and strengthen trust in law enforcement.
'I know a lot of us really want to change the way people see police officers,' said Campos. 'Give us a chance. Let us prove ourselves to you guys that we do mean to help people.'
The newly minted police officers will go on to complete anywhere from 17 to 23 weeks of field training. The hiring process will begin again for NLVPD in September, with the academy beginning Oct. 6. More on that process is available on the Join NLVPD website.

Hermoso left out of Spain's squad for Women's European Championship
Mexico's Tigres Jennifer Hermoso, center, and Margaret Williams-Purce, left, and Miranda Freeman from NJ/NY Gotham FC from U.S., fight for the ball during a CONCACAF Women Champions Cup final soccer match in Monterrey, Mexico, Saturday, May 24, 2025. (AP Photo/Jorge Mendoza) MADRID (AP) — Spain's squad for the Women's European Championship does not include Jenni Hermoso, the player who was kissed without her consent by the former president of the Spanish soccer federation in the awards ceremony of the 2023 World Cup. The kiss led to a guilty verdict for sexual assault for Luis Rubiales earlier this year. Advertisement Spain stars Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati were among the 25 players called up by coach Montse Tomé on Tuesday ahead of the tournament in Switzerland. The training camp will begin next Thursday in Spain, with players from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid — who participated in the final of the Copa de la Reina on Saturday, due to report Sunday. The team will play a friendly against Japan near Madrid on June 27, and two days later will travel to Switzerland ahead of its Euro debut against Portugal on July 3. The final roster will be 23 players. The other nations in Spain's Euro 2025 group are Italy and Belgium. Advertisement Hermoso, who plays for Mexican club Tigres, has not been called up for national duty since friendlies against Italy and Canada last October. She had played in the Olympic tournament in Paris, when Spain finished fourth. Hermoso, the all-time leading scorer for Spain's national team with 57 goals in 123 matches, was left out of the squad right after the scandal broke, when Tomé said she was protecting the player. Hermoso was back with the squad after that, but the coach had said after the Olympics that a new cycle was beginning in the national team. In addition to winning the World Cup in 2023, Spain also won last year's Nations League title. In February, a Spanish court ruled that Rubiales had sexually abused Hermoso when he kissed her without consent. Spain's National Court ordered Rubiales to pay more than 10,000 euros ($10,400 then) in fines and prohibited him from getting within 200 meters of Hermoso or communicating with her for a year. ___ AP soccer:

Court shown footage of alleged Hainault sword attacker unboxing samurai weapon
Police have released video footage of the alleged killer of a 14-year-old boy unboxing a samurai sword and calling the weapon "freaking sexy". Marcus Monzo, 37, denies murdering teenager Daniel Anjorin and attempting to kill four others during a 20-minute rampage in Hainault, east London, on 30 April last year. Jurors at the Old Bailey have been shown a four-minute video clip from 4 April, which was recovered from his iPhone after his arrest. The Spanish-Brazilian national, from Newham in east London, appears to be reviewing a sword he says was "handmade in Japan" and "took more than a month to reach me". Dressed in a yellow hoodie, black shorts, toe socks and flipflops, and wearing headphones, he is standing on black mats next to a ginger cat he calls the "Wizard". A martial arts-style punching bag and another sword on a skateboard can be seen in the background. "This just came through… Ninja stuff," he says before opening a long box containing a sword. "So I'm sort of obliged to do some ninja stuff with the Wizard." Monzo also says "freaking sexy" and "ooh" as he lunges and makes different moves with the sheathed sword. The court has previously heard Monzo was a "talented martial artist". Prosecutors said he "killed and skinned" his cat before driving his grey Ford Transit van at speed into pedestrian Donato Iwule. He then struck him in the neck with the same weapon used to kill Daniel, who suffered "essentially a near-decapitation", the jury was earlier told. PC Yasmin Mechem-Whitfield was also repeatedly struck with the 60cm blade, before Monzo entered a nearby house and attacked a couple inside, then struck another police officer, it is alleged. Monzo has pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing an offensive weapon - a katana sword and a tanto katana sword. He denies charges of murder, attempted murder, wounding with intent, aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article. Read more from Sky News:What we know about Austria school shooting15 police officers injured as Northern Ireland protests turn violent The jury has been told there is no issue about who carried out the attacks and that Monzo was under the influence of cannabis at the time. But prosecutors say his psychotic state was self-induced and does not meet the threshold for diminished responsibility. The trial continues.

Former Carl Hayden High School athlete Kendre Pride killed in Phoenix shooting
Corrections & Clarifications: Kendre Pride attended Carl Hayden Community High School in Phoenix. Another high school was incorrectly listed in a previous version of the article. A 20-year-old man who was a star two-sport athlete in high school was killed in a shooting at a Phoenix apartment, according to police. Officers responded to an apartment complex near 32nd and Glendale avenues at around 5:10 p.m. on June 7 after receiving reports of gunshots. They found Kendre Pride with at least one gunshot wound, according to department spokesperson Sgt. Rob Scherer. Pride did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead at the apartment, Scherer said. Homicide detectives took over the investigation, Scherer said. It was not known if police had identified any suspects. He encouraged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or 480-TESTIGO for Spanish to provide an anonymous tip. Rewards will be paid for information leading to an arrest in this case, Scherer said. Pride was a top junior two-sport athlete in the state who attended Carl Hayden Community High School in Phoenix in 2022 and played as a running back in football and as a guard in basketball. Pride was supposed to move to Basha High School in Chandler but ended up not doing so. He was listed as having played as a defensive back at Feather River College in Quincy, California, in fall 2024, according to the school's website.
