More Nagaland bodies brace for influx of people evicted in Assam
The Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in Assam has been carrying out an eviction drive since June, clearing government lands of some 50,000 people, mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims with roots in present-day Bangladesh.
Several tribes of Nagaland living in areas bordering Assam have been particularly concerned about a proposed eviction drive in a forested stretch at Uriamghat in the Golaghat district. Many illegal settlers left the area adjoining Nagaland after the Assam government began conducting land survey operations a few days ago.
On Wednesday (July 23, 2025), the Konyak Students' Union directed its federating units in the Mon district, especially in the Tizit and Naginimora areas bordering Assam, to deploy 100 volunteers daily at every entry point.
'The volunteers are tasked with checking all non-locals entering the Mon district to ensure they are carrying valid ILP (Inner-Line Permit) and proper documentation,' the union, catering to Konyak Naga students, said in a 'notification'.
An ILP, mandated by the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873, is a temporary travel document an Indian citizen is required to carry while visiting the 'protected' States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland.
The Konyak students' body said anyone found without valid documents must be sent back immediately from the Mon district. It appealed to the district administration to stop issuing the ILP for at least a month to allow proper scrutiny and prevent unchecked influx into the district.
'Strict compliance from all units and authorities concerned is expected in the interest of safeguarding our indigenous rights and security,' the union stated.
A union of the Sümi Naga students living across the Chumoukedima and Dimapur districts raised the first alarm on July 21. Similar concerns about possible influx of 'illegal immigrants' were aired by the Lotha and Ao Naga students' bodies in the Wokha and Mokokchung districts.
These districts border Assam.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said his government reclaimed 1.29 bighas of land from encroachers since 2021, and the eviction drive would continue.
One person was killed in a firing while several others, including police and Forest Department personnel, were injured during an eviction drive in western Assam's Goalpara district a few days ago.

Andhra Pradesh Discoms seek ERC nod to collect true-up charges of ₹12,771 cr
The three power distribution companies (discoms) in the state have filed a petition before Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC), seeking permission to collect ₹12,771 crore from consumers through true-up charges . The ERC released the notification asking the public to file their objections/suggestions on the petitions filed by the discoms. The Left parties have demanded that the govt immediately withdraw the proposal. According to the affidavit, SPDCL wants to collect ₹3,046 crore through true-up charges to recover the actual costs of power supplied from 2019 to 2024. APEPDCL has urged the commission to allow it to collect ₹7,790 crore, while APCPDCL wants to recover ₹1,935 crore. The discoms have been collecting fuel and power purchase cost adjustment (FPPCA) charges for the past three years. Recently, the distribution companies filed a petition before APERC seeking ratification of its decision to collect 40 paise per unit, which has been continuing for the past six months. While APERC, in Nov 2024, allowed the discoms to recover ₹9,412 crore through FPPCA charges , the discoms levied nearly ₹14,000 crore burden on the consumers in the last one year, citing old dues. However, energy minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar has made it clear that the govt has no plans to increase power tariff , adding that power tariff may be reduced in the coming days. He blamed the previous YSRCP govt for the discoms' move to collect the true-up and FPPCA charges. "The mismanagement and irregularities during the YSRCP regime forced discoms to recover the true-up and FPPCA charges from the consumer. The discoms have filed petitions to collect the dues pertaining to the YSRCP regime," Gottipati claimed. Dismissing the minister's allegations, CPI-M leaders V Srinivasa Rao and Ch Baburao said blaming the previous regime is only a "cover-up act" by the TDP-led NDA govt, and warned of agitations across the state if the discoms did not withdraw the true-up charges notice.

Congress President Kharge accuses Centre, EC of disenfranchising poor and minorities
ANI Kharge accuses Centre, EC of disenfranchising poor and minorities Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India and the BJP-led Central government, accusing them of systematically disenfranchising large sections of the population, particularly the poor, Dalits, backward communities, and minorities, through mass deletion of names from electoral the AICC Law, Human Rights and RTI Department's Legal Conclave, Kharge said, "When lakhs of voters are removed from the electoral list, and this trend spreads nationwide, it must be called out. Today, they themselves have published such a list. If out of 70 crore voters, one crore is removed without reason, it's clearly an attempt to disenfranchise the poor and minorities." Kharge alleged that the Election Commission and the government are equally responsible for what he described as the erosion of constitutional rights."The government and the Election Commission are responsible for eroding constitutional rights. The Supreme Court has acknowledged the seriousness of this matter, but despite several hearings, the Election Commission has not changed its behaviour," Kharge said. He further accused the Election Commission of losing its autonomy and called the apex poll body a puppet of PM Modi. He said, "Denying voting rights to 65 lakh or 1 crore voters in Bihar is a deliberate conspiracy to exclude Dalits and backward communities from participation. The Election Commission is a puppet of Modi ji." Kharge also linked these actions to a wider pattern of communal polarisation in BJP-governed states."I want to say clearly, in BJP-ruled states, atrocities against minorities have increased. They talk about Mughals, about chicken, about Mangalsutra, only to divide society. The people of this country elected the Prime Minister to protect the Constitution, not to crush it," he said. Meanwhile, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday asserted that the election system in India was "already dead," and alleged that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were "rigged" and that he has proof to substantiate the claim. He was speaking at the AICC annual legal conclave titled 'Constitutional Challenges - Perspectives & Pathways'."The truth is that the election system in India is already dead. The Prime Minister of India holds office with a very slim majority. If 15 seats were rigged, we suspect that the number is over 70 to 80, he would not have been the Prime Minister of India. We are going to prove to you in the coming few days how a Lok Sabha election can be rigged and was rigged," Rahul Gandhi said while addressing the gathering in the national the six-month investigation carried out by Congress, he further alleged that the Election Commission of India (ECI) doesn't exist and has disappeared. According to documentation received from the EC, Gandhi said that the Congress has ascertained that nearly 1.5 lakh voters out of 6.5 lakh who voted in the Lok Sabha elections were "fake"."It makes it clear that the institution that defends the constitution has been obliterated and taken over. We have such proof that will show the whole country that the institution of the Election Commission does not exist. It has disappeared. It has taken us 6 months of non-stop work to find this proof. You will see with zero doubt how a Lok Sabha election is stolen. 6.5 lakh voters vote, and 1.5 lakh of those voters are fake," Gandhi Congress leader rekindled his suspicions regarding the election system, saying that he had his doubts about "something being wrong" since 2014. Questioning the BJP's sweeping victories in the assembly elections of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, Gandhi noted that they began investigating electoral malpractices following their defeat in Maharashtra, where one crore new voters appeared within months ahead of the assembly elections, ultimately voting for the BJP.

'EC is a puppet of Modi ji': Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge slams poll body; alleges systematic removal of minorities from voters list
Mallikarjun Kharge (PTI image) and ECI (File Photo) NEW DELHI: Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing it of acting as a 'puppet' of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and systematically working to disenfranchise poor and marginalised communities. Kharge alleged that the ECI, in collaboration with the BJP-led Central government, is deliberately deleting names of voters particularly Dalits, backward communities, minorities, and the poor from the electoral rolls. 'Denying voting rights to 65 lakh or 1 crore voters in Bihar is a deliberate conspiracy to exclude Dalits and backward communities from participation. The Election Commission is a puppet of Modi ji,' Kharge said while addressing at the Legal Conclave organized by the AICC's Law, Human Rights and RTI Department. He pointed to official figures to back his claim, stating that if out of 70 crore voters, one crore names are removed without valid reason and it reflects a clear attempt to strip vulnerable sections of their constitutional rights. "When lakhs of voters are removed from the electoral list, and this trend spreads nationwide, it must be called out. Today, they themselves have published such a list.
