DA calls on SAPS to clean up its house and remove corrupt cops in key roles
The DA is calling on police managers to take decisive and immediate action to clean up the SAPS ranks by removing officers serving in the country's most sensitive and high-risk positions and facing criminal cases.
This follows the arrest of a SAPS court orderly in Kleinvlei, a Cape Town suburb known for gang and drug activity. The officer was allegedly caught during a police operation on Saturday night with 965 Mandrax tablets, a 'bankie' of tik and a toy firearm.
DA National Council of Provinces (NCOP) member on security and justice, Nicholas Gotsell, said the case was a glaring example of leadership failure and a broader culture of impunity within the police service.
'The DA calls for urgent review of SAPS staff in sensitive roles. A court officer with prior misconduct was caught with drugs in a gang area. Multiple officers are linked to drugs; some are quietly reassigned instead of being fired,' said Gotsell.
Gotsell revealed that the arrested officer was previously implicated in illicit activities while serving in the SAPS metro K9 unit.
Despite credible red flags, SAPS leadership reassigned him to the Cape Town magistrate's court, where he had direct access to detainees.

Men sought after armed robbers in disguise raid Middelburg filling station
A large group of armed robbers dressed as petrol attendants robbed the Doornkop Sasol Filling Station in a hold-up and made off with two vehicles. Middelburg Observer reports that, according to Mid Alarms operational manager Johan Oberholzer, an undetermined number of suspects descended on Sasol Doornkop yesterday at 01:30, where they held up staff members inside the convenience store. A reaction officer from Mid Alarms arrived at the Sasol, and during his initial scan of the scene, petrol attendants were walking around outside, and everything seemed normal. As the reaction officer approached one petrol attendant to ask whether everything was well, the disguised robber pointed a firearm at him and forced him into the shop, where he was held up with the rest of the hostages. 'The officer could not raise an alarm, and two of the suspects left with his reaction vehicle,' Oberholzer explained. A second reaction officer also responded minutes later. 'The second reaction officer was also held at gunpoint and taken inside.' According to Oberholzer, the armed robbers then stole cigarettes and other items from the convenience store before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash. Once the robbers were gone, the SAPS was dispatched. 'The SAPS responded quickly, and our reaction officers successfully managed to recover our stolen vehicle. A Volkswagen GTI was also stolen, but was recovered by the police later that day at a school in Doornkop.' While another publication reported that two people were shot, Oberholzer refutes those reports, adding that no one was shot or injured during the robbery. 'We have very clear imagery of the two suspects in our reaction vehicle, and we appeal to anyone with information on the suspects to please come forward,' Oberholzer urged. Although the number of suspects is unknown, Oberholzer said it was a large group of between six and nine suspects. Anyone with information that could assist in the suspects' arrest is asked to call 082 802 6399. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Jabu Ndubane confirmed they are looking for the two people in the photo to assist them in their investigation. Marburg CPF active in fighting crime
Marburg Community Policing Forum (MCPF) is actively involved in monitoring crime in the area. A new committee was elected recently and is determined to make Marburg safe again. The chairperson, Fathima Moosa, said the committee attends Saps meetings at station level on a regular basis. 'The information received from the station has made the MCPF stronger and more able to fight crime in the area. A WhatsApp group was created for the community and people are posting crime-related issues. Security companies were added to the group and they are responding to people who need help.' The committee has grown stronger and residents have volunteered as patrollers. With more patrollers on board with the security companies targeting hot spots, crime has decreased. The forum celebrated its third anniversary recently and is proud to be a part of the Saps crime fighting initiative. 'Community police forums are the eyes and ears of the police and follow a code of conduct. A constitution is signed by the members of the CPF and the area has a sector commander,' said Moosa. The forum will occupy the old rehab centre in Marburg soon. It will be called the MCPF Community Centre, and its executives look forward to assisting the community. Two men in custody for murder in Daggakraal
Two men in custody for murder in Daggakraal Two suspects, aged 24 and 47, are expected to appear in the Amersfoort Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, June 17, on charges of murder, fraud and theft in connection with the killing of Sydwell Sibisi (61). The suspects were arrested in Daggakraal near Amersfoort on Friday, June 13, by a team comprising the SAPS, the Standerton K9 Unit and a private security company. According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, Sibisi was murdered on January 31 while travelling with a relative between Volksrust and Daggakraal. The vehicle they were in had a flat tyre and they stopped at the roadside. A white Toyota Fortuner approached, and its occupants allegedly handcuffed the two. Sibisi was then attacked with an axe and a panga. Both weapons were left at the scene when the suspects fled. 'The police discovered that the murder was connected to insurance fraud and theft. The suspects allegedly used the victim's identity to register and cash out a policy following his death,' she said.
