Sean ‘Diddy' Combs' bail bid denied, judge says he must stay in jail until sentencing

Sean 'Diddy' Combs cannot go home to await sentencing on his prostitution-related conviction, a judge said on Monday, denying the jailed music mogul's latest bid for bail. Combs has been behind bars since his September arrest. He faced federal charges of coercing girlfriends into having drug-fuelled sex marathons with male sex workers while he watched and filmed them. He was acquitted last month of the top charges – racketeering and sex trafficking – while being convicted of two counts of a prostitution-related offence. In denying Combs' US$50 million bond proposal, Judge Arun Subramanian said the musician had not proven that he did not pose a flight risk or danger, nor shown an 'exceptional circumstance' that would justify his release after a conviction that otherwise requires detention. Combs' arguments 'might have traction in a case that didn't involve evidence of violence, coercion or subjugation in connection with the acts of prostitution at issue, but the record here contains evidence of all three', the judge wrote. Prosecutors declined to comment on the ruling. Messages seeking comment were sent to Combs' lawyers. The conviction carries the potential for up to 10 years in prison. But there are complicated federal guidelines for calculating sentences in any given case and prosecutors and Combs' lawyers disagree substantially on how the guidelines come out for his case.

2 killed, 6 wounded in shooting at music festival after-party in downtown Los Angeles

A shooting erupted during a music festival after-party in downtown Los Angeles, killing two people and wounding six others early on Monday, authorities said. Police first responded at around 11pm on Sunday to shut down a 'big party' after officers saw a person possibly armed with a gun go inside a building in a downtown warehouse district, said police officer Norma Eisenman. That person was arrested at the scene, she said. The party had been promoted on social media as an unofficial after-party for Hard Summer, a weekend techno music festival held at Hollywood Park, about 14km (9 miles) away in Inglewood, KTLA-TV reported. Soon after officers had cleared the area, police received a report of shots fired at around 1am. When the officers returned, they found one person dead and learned multiple people had been struck by gunfire, Eisenman said in an email. A male victim died at the scene and a female victim died at a hospital, Eisenman said. Six others were taken to hospitals and their conditions were unknown, she said. A man told KABC-TV that his 29-year-old son was one of the two people killed.

Officials investigate ex-Trump prosecutor over alleged illegal political activity

Federal officials have opened an investigation into Jack Smith, the former special counsel who investigated then-candidate Donald Trump before his re-election, for alleged illegal political activity. The Office of Special Counsel, an independent federal agency, on Saturday confirmed the investigation after reporting by other news organisations. Smith was named special counsel to investigate Trump by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022. Trump and his Republican allies, including Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton, have – without offering evidence of wrongdoing – accused Smith of violating the Hatch Act, a federal law that bans certain public officials from engaging in political activity. Smith prosecuted two federal cases against Republican candidate Trump in the lead-up to the November 2024 presidential election. Smith ultimately dropped the cases – neither one had gone to trial – after Trump was reelected, which would have shielded him from prosecution according to long-standing Justice Department practice. Smith then subsequently resigned as special counsel.
