Choosing the right foundation

Choosing the right foundation

The Sun13-05-2025

IN an ever-evolving educational landscape, choosing the right university can significantly influence one's academic and professional career. Low Ee Xuan, currently a student at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), choose the Foundation in Business as it met her aspiration to pursue her ambition in commerce.
Low's decision to study at TAR UMT was driven by both practical and personal considerations. 'I chose TAR UMT because of its high-quality education and affordable fees. I also have a friend studying at TAR UMT and she spoke about the conducive learning environment, vast campus surroundings and the university's good support system to help students in all aspects, including financial support,' she shared.
'Another key advantage, the university offers a dual degree programme. The option to pursue a dual degree is attractive as I have the opportunity to study abroad, where I can experience different cultures, and environments as well as work with peers from different countries. Such experiences are essential in today's landscape,' said Low.
Another reason she chose to study the Foundation in Business was her interest and ambition to learn more about the different aspects of business.
'I was attracted to the programme's comprehensive approach, which covers topics like accounting, finance, marketing, and management. Also I was eager to understand how businesses adapt to a changing world, and my belief was in the foundation programme,' she shared.
The shift from high school to the foundation programme posed a challenge for Low, 'Compared to my high school years where the pace and structure was more controlled, university life is different as each course in the foundation programme delves deeper into a specific subject.
'The assignments are more complex and specific. For example, one of the assignments included examining the nature of a company's surrounding competitors, its financial status and marketing activities. The experience was not only interesting but also surreal, similar to an actual business analysis.
'I also enjoyed the subject, 'Principles of Marketing', especially the connection between psychology and consumer behaviour. Certain courses were challenging especially Management Information Systems (MIS). Fortunately, I received help from my lecturers and friends who were willing to explain the concepts to me, so I could better comprehend the subject,' shared Low.
Although the programme duration is only for a year, foundation students are still required to be active in co-curricular activities.
'It was challenging in the beginning having to maintain a balanced campus lifestyle but this taught me how to manage my time well. I prepared a detailed daily schedule for attending classes, studying and participating in co-curricular activities. In following this schedule, it became a habit and I felt good that I could spend my time well in a day with important and useful activities and tasks,' said Low.

MCA tells govt to define small businesses entitled to LPG

KUALA LUMPUR: The government must specify which micro and small businesses are entitled to use subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). MCA vice-president Datuk Lawrence Low said the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) must define what constitutes a "micro and small-scale food and sales business" amid growing confusion over the enforcement of subsidised LPG use under Ops Gasak. Low said the lack of details had left many traders uncertain and anxious. "Who exactly are these businesses? Are they classified by the volume of LPG they consume, their income levels, or some other benchmark? "Or will enforcement officers be left to make these determinations on the ground during Ops Gasak? The absence of clear criteria invites inconsistency and could result in unfair treatment," he said. Low, who is also chairs MCA's Economic and SME Affairs Committee, added that the confusion was compounded by a letter issued by Petronas, dated April 30, which prohibited the supply of subsidised LPG to commercial premises. "Why hasn't KPDN instructed Petronas to retract this letter? It is the root cause of the uncertainty and pressure being felt by small business owners," he said. The government had launched Op Gasak on May 1 to clamp down on the misuse of susidised LPG cylinders. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali had said household and small businesses could use fewer than three 14kg LPG cylinders at a time without obtaining a scheduled controlled goods permit. Yesterday, Armizan said the exemption for small businesses would remain in effect until amendments to the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021 were finalised.

RM1mil student loan fund set up to support future generations

THE legacy of Tan Sri Wong Mook Leong lives on through a generous RM1 million donation towards student loan funds, ensuring financially challenged students can pursue their education with greater ease. Datuk Wong Shung Yen, son of the late Mook Leong, contributed RM500,000 to Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), establishing the TARC-Tan Sri Wong Mook Leong Student Loan. The initiative marks the 135th donor loan under the TAR UMT Student Loan Fund, a revolving, interest-free financial aid programme aimed at helping deserving students complete their tertiary education. During a mock cheque presentation ceremony at TAR UMT's Kuala Lumpur campus on May 15, the donation was handed over to Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy, Chairman of the Board of Governors (BOG) and TAR UMT Alumni Council (TAC). In a second significant contribution, Shung Yen presented another RM500,000 cheque to Prof Datuk Dr Ewe Hong Tat, President of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), for the establishment of a similar fund: UTAR-Tan Sri Wong Mook Leong Student Loan. Prominent figures present at the event included Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, member of the Board of Trustees, TARC Education Foundation, Datuk Chong Sin Woon, member of the Board of Governors, and Prof Datuk Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UMT. Reflecting on Mook Leong's unwavering dedication to education, Chan recalled his principled leadership and tireless efforts to foster unity across Malaysia's diverse communities. 'I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Shun Yen for establishing this student loan fund in his late father's honour. If Tan Sri Wong were with us today, he would embrace this initiative with immense pride and joy. This is a truly meaningful way to keep his legacy alive,' said Chan. For Shun Yen, the establishment of these funds is more than just a tribute—it is a continuation of his father's mission to support students in need. 'This initiative is not solely about honouring my father's name; it is about creating opportunities for financially challenged students to complete their education—something my father was deeply passionate about,' said Shun Yen. Throughout his career, Mook Leong played a pivotal role in shaping Malaysia's educational financing landscape. He was instrumental in the formation of Koperasi Jayadiri Malaysia Berhad (KOJADI), one of the country's earliest structured student loan programmes. His leadership on the board helped KOJADI grow into one of Malaysia's most impactful education loan cooperatives. 'This is the most fitting way to honour my father—not through mere ceremony, but through continuity. We hope the fund will continue to support students with the same drive and determination that my father once had—so that they, in time, may give back to the communities that uplifted them, just as he did,' said Shun Yen, expressing gratitude to Chan for his efforts in bringing the initiative to life. With these newly established funds, the late Mook Leong's commitment to educational empowerment remains firmly in place, ensuring Malaysia's future generations will continue to have access to financial support as they pursue their dreams.
