George Pickens is catching flak in Pittsburgh again, even as he's catching passes from his new quarterback.
The wide receiver, who was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in early May after three volatile seasons with the Steelers, was scheduled to be the star attraction at the George Pickens Youth Football Camp at Pittsburgh's Highmark Stadium this coming weekend.
Despite previously telling campers that he would still attend the event even after changing teams, Pickens has now decided not to participate at all, according to an email sent to attendees' families this week.
The camp has been postponed until July 20 and will now feature Pittsburgh tight end Pat Freiermuith and possibly other Steelers players. The organizers are not offering refunds.
Though he has not addressed his cancellation publicly, Pickens is reportedly getting work in with his new Cowboys teammates at the annual retreat organized by quarterback Dak Prescott.
There are two ways to look at this, depending primarily on which of the two fanbases you pledge allegiance to.
For the families of those youth campers, there is obvious frustration. That is reflected loud and clear in the email sent to them by the camp organizers, who explained in breathless detail how Pickens "has decided to walk back on his word" and trashed him repeatedly for his "disappointing lack of accountability" and "disregard for the families and children who were excited to meet him."
Steelers fans are no doubt chalking it up as just one more reason why they're better off without the mercurial wideout. Before this, they were merely glad to see him sent packing; now they can feel justified in actively despising him forever.
But the cold, hard truth is this: Pickens is heading into a massively important contract year, not to mention his first campaign with Prescott and the Cowboys as a featured component of head coach Brian Schottenheimer's new-look offense. Skipping the so-called "Dak Pack Summit"- for any reason- only costs him valuable reps and a chance to gel with his new quarterback and teammates before the stakes get very high, starting in Week 1.
Pickens may well have intended to keep his camp commitment when he first told families two days following his trade, but his schedule, understandably, changed once he got situated with his new employer. Canceling on kids at your previous stop and on families who have paid money is unfortunate, but the 24-year-old has a new team and a new city now... not to mention a new chance at earning a life-changing second NFL contract.
Steelers Nation may be mad. But how would the Cowboys and their fans view it if news broke that Pickens bailed on offseason work with the entire Dallas offense to fly back to Pittsburgh just to sign some autographs and collect an appearance check?
Returning to Pittsburgh would have made for a nice footnote to the time Pickens spent there; a schedule conflict brought on by his new job shouldn't immediately cast him as some sort of villain.

George Pickens backs out of hosting his own youth football camp
Even after the Pittsburgh Steelers traded him to the Dallas Cowboys, wide receiver George Pickens was all set to host the George Pickens Youth Football Camp, which was scheduled for Saturday, June 28 in Pittsburgh. Then he pulled out. In a Tuesday email to families that had registered for the camp, TruEdge Sports — the company that coordinates youth camps for several NFL and college athletes — notified families that Pickens had "walked back on his word." The former Steelers' representation notified TruEdge that he was "no longer interested in attending the camp" with his name on it. In the email, TruEdge Sports told families that they had reached out to confirm Pickens' participation shortly after his trade to Dallas was announced. At the time, they wrote, they "were promptly assured that George remained committed to the camp and intended to show up for the families who had registered." GEORGE PICKENS: Former Steelers teammate Russell Wilson calls new Cowboys WR 'misunderstood' Instead, a couple of weeks before the day of the camp, Pickens informed TruEdge that he'd no longer be attending. TruEdge's email was not all bad news. The company went on to say that they were committed to holding a youth camp in Pittsburgh over the summer, though it would be postponed to July. COWBOYS NEWS: QB Dak Prescott wants Super Bowl championship: Legacy 'be damned' TruEdge also said they were able to find an NFL player to replace Pickens: Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth. The company added that they were also in talks with multiple other Steelers players to make appearances at the camp in late July, since it now nearly overlaps with the start of Pittsburgh's preseason training camp. All campers who attend the event during its new date will receive autographs from every player making an appearance. The Steelers confirmed to USA TODAY Sports that Freiermuth would be replacing Pickens at the camp. Both the Cowboys — Pickens' new team — and TruEdge Sports declined requests for comment. Strengths, weaknesses and wildcards at Cowboys OT position in 2025
In one of the more head-scratching moves of the offseason, the Dallas Cowboys decided to roll the whole thing back at the offensive tackle position in 2025. Tyler Guyton and Terence Steele are once again expected to be the starting tackles and little to no contingency plans exist if that doesn't work out. Steele and Guyton were problematic in pass protection and based on Pro Football Focus grades, they easily formed the poorest pass protection unit in the NFL. One can say what they want about PFF but that's one bold decree very few sane people will argue against. Yet, just because the two starting OTs were poor pass protectors in 2024 doesn't mean it's a roster full of weaknesses and all hope is lost. There are reasons to be optimistic, and intrigued as well. Cowboys' strengths at OT: Coaching The Cowboys invested heavily in their offensive line over the offseason, not with veteran upgrades but rather with coaches. In addition to adding Conor Riley, a standout offensive line mind from Kansas State, the Cowboys brought in Klayton Adams to run the offense. Adams is regarded as one of the best O-line coaches in the NFL and will surely take an active approach to coaching up Dallas' suspect OTs in 2025. It's also worth noting both coaches had some degree of input regarding the current stable of OTs on the roster and if they didn't think they could turn Steele and Guyton into solid pass protecters, the team probably would have addressed the position better over the offseason. Cowboys' weaknesses at OT: Pass protection Dallas had to replace Guyton at one point last offseason; that's how bad the pass protection issue was. He has potential to be great but that's a big question heading into Year 2 since it's more heart and mind dependent than it is physical ability. Based on all previous performances, Steele, the starting right tackle, is never going to be a very good pass protector. Even before his nasty knee injury he struggled, so at this point, below average might be his ceiling. But for much as he struggles in pass pro, he thrives in run blocking which is why Steele is still a valuable resource. Cowboys' biggest wildcard at OT: Asim Richards Guyton could be seen as a wild card of sorts given his terrible rookie season and massive sophomore expectations but the coaching staff clearly believes in him, so the expectations are set. Richards, the LT working behind Guyton, looks like the real wild card since no one is quite sure what the expectations should be for him. Richards has been improving in the background for quite a while and basically made it possible for the Cowboys to part ways with Chuma Edoga. Richards looks like the first alternate should Guyton falter and it's unclear whether he's capable of being a starter or if he's just another name in the long list of midround tackles the Cowboys have drafted.
