Delhi GM Open 2025: Abhijeet Gupta creates history with fourth title win
New Delhi [India] June 14 (ANI): Indian Grandmaster Abhijeet Gupta emerged as the undisputed champion of the 21st Delhi International Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament (Delhi GM Open) 2025, scoring 8.5 points out of 10 to clinch a record fourth title at Asia's most prestigious open chess event, according to a release from Delhi GM Open.
Gupta, 36, delivered a flawless campaign, remaining unbeaten across 10 rounds. His decisive Round 9 victory over Belarusian GM Mihail Nikitenko gave him the edge, and a final-round draw against IM Aronyak Ghosh secured the title outright.
Nikitenko (2520, Belarus) finished second with 8 points, edging Indian GM Diptayan Ghosh (2573) on tiebreaks.
Ghosh claimed third place, having impressed with sharp play and a key final-round win over GM Karthik Venkataraman.
Despite finishing on 8 points, IM Aronyak Ghosh and GM Aditya S Samant settled for fourth and fifth, respectively, on tiebreaks.
The top 10 featured a compelling mix of seasoned professionals and rising stars. Vietnam's GM Nguyen Duc Hoa secured 6th place with 7.5 points, followed by India's top seed GM SL Narayanan in 7th.
Armenian GMs Mamikon Gharibyan and Manuel Petrosyan finished 8th and 9th, respectively, both with 7.5 points. Rounding off the top 10 was Kyrgyzstan's IM Tologon Tegin Semetei, who also ended with 7.5 points, highlighting the tournament's diverse and competitive field.
Organised by Delhi Chess Association, this year's edition welcomed over 2,500 players from more than 20 countries, including 24 Grandmasters, and boasted a record prize pool of Rs 1.21 crore. Held in New Delhi, the tournament once again cemented its reputation as a vital platform for elite and emerging chess players alike.
Meanwhile, Category C, hosted at Tivoli Gardens, Chattarpur, featured 1,250 players and a total prize pool of Rs 35 lakhs.
The winner of the section was Dinesh Kumar H from Tamil Nadu, who took home the Rs 4,00,000 top prize. He was followed by Naitik Sethi (Rs 3,00,000) and Sibi M (Rs 2,00,000) in second and third place, respectively.
Other notable prize-winners included Gitanesh Phogat, Sai Krishna S., and AGM Yogesh Kumar Gupta, reflecting the remarkable grassroots strength of the Indian chess circuit.
As the curtains fall on this landmark edition, Abhijeet Gupta's fourth crown stands not just as a personal milestone but also as a testament to India's growing dominance in the global chess ecosystem, both at the top and grassroots levels. (ANI)

Beckenham [UK], June 16 (ANI): Ahead of the first Test against England at Leeds, India's rising batting star Sai Sudharsan spoke on how fellow Tamil Nadu all-rounder Washington Sundar has been an inspiration for him, motivating him to rise up the ranks and wear the Indian colours quickly. The first Test against England at Leeds from June 20 onwards could kickstart the Test career of a 23-year-old Sudharsan, who has represented India in three ODIs and a T20I so far, getting two ODI half-centuries in South Africa. Recently, he won the Orange Cap for most runs and the 'Emerging Player' award during the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Gujarat Titans (GT), scoring 759 runs in 16 innings, with a century and six half-centuries. Sudharsan is Sundar's junior in domestic cricket, with the all-rounder having made his first-class debut at the age of 17 back in 2016. Sudharsan's debut came at the age of 21, six years later. Before becoming an IPL star, Sudharsan's grind came in Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), where he sits at number 10 among top run-getters, with 1,303 runs in 30 innings at an average of 56.65, a century and 13 fifties. Speaking about looking up to Sundar, who made his international debut as a teen in 2017 and Test debut in 2021 during the legendary Brisbane Test against Australia, Sudharsan said that the 25-year-old's quick rise served as an 'inspiration' and 'motivator' for him. 'He has been my inspiration since I was young. I have played a few games against him, so it is always special. To be honest, we have looked up to him a lot. I have practised once or twice (against Sundar), the way he went up and the way he played for the country, it was really quick, so I had that in my mind. He did well in the IPL, and then he played for the country. So it was a great motivator for me from Chennai. Knowing him since I was young, playing with him, it is kind of inspiring. It made me feel I want to do things the same way,' said Sudharsan in a video posted on BCCI's official website. Sundar is also extremely proud of the youngster's growth over the years, saying that he has inspired a lot of kids in Chennai already. 'I have watched him on TV. There is a lot to take away from him, his skillset and work ethic he has got. He has inspired a lot of kids in Chennai, and I hope he will continue inspiring kids all over the world,' said Sundar. 'He has told me about that quite a few times. A lot of my friends and coaches, as well, have spoken about his growth. He has only grown in the last three or four years and has got better with every year,' he concluded. India tour of England will take place from June to August 2025, with matches to be played at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord's (London), Old Trafford (Manchester), and The Oval (London). A new era beckons for India in the Test format as the modern-day giants gear up for their first assignment without the prized batting bigwigs Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Punjab FC announces signing of defender Muhammed Uvais
Mohali (Punjab) [India], June 16 (ANI): Punjab FC has announced the signing of defender Muhammed Uvais for the upcoming season. The full-back last featured for Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC, where he reached both the ISL Cup semifinal and the Kalinga Super Cup final. Uvais joined Jamshedpur FC in 2022 and made 56 appearances for the club across three seasons, providing four assists and one goal, which came this season against Bengaluru FC. Uvais has signed a multi-year contract with the Shers. The 26-year-old was born in Nilambur in the football-loving district of Malappuram in Kerala and primarily plays as a left-back. He started his professional career in 2017 with FC Kerala and played in the 2017-2018 I-League 2. He moved to FC Thrissur for the next season before moving to Ozone FC in Bengaluru, before shifting to another city club, Bengaluru United, in the 2020 season. Uvais shifted back to Kerala the next year and represented Kerala State Electricity Board before being signed by Gokulam Kerala FC, with whom he won the I-League in the 2021-22 season. He made 18 appearances and scored once in the season, which led him to sign for Jamshedpur FC in the ISL on a three-year contract in 2022. Speaking on his signing for Punjab FC, Uvais said, 'I am thrilled to join the Punjab FC setup. They have a promising project and a very talented group of players. I am confident of giving my best efforts and winning some trophies for the club.' Uvais started his footballing journey from the famed MSP Academy in Malappuram before moving to Bharath FC Pune Academy. He has also represented Sudeva Delhi FC in his youth career. "To be able to stand up....": Ponting speaks on Markram's WTC title-sealing century for South Africa
London [UK], June 16 (ANI): Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting hailed Aiden Markram's title-sealing century against Australia in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, saying that it is up there with the finest tons scored during the tournament finals. No stranger to scoring big runs on grand occasions, Ricky Ponting has a history of stepping up when it mattered the most. His classic 140 against India in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Final in 2003 and 111* against England in the ICC Men's Champions Trophy in 2009 are some of his finest ODI knocks. Speaking in the aftermath of the epic World Test Championship Final at Lord's, Ponting had high praise for Markram's cracking ton that helped South Africa lift the mace, placing the knock among the best centuries that he could recall on the big stage. 'When you look back through big ICC events, I think the first thing that probably comes to mind is World Cup finals,' Ponting told ICC Digital. 'And then probably Travis Head's innings (137) in the World Cup (2023) final, and then the last World Test Championship final (163). And this one is got to be absolutely as good as any of those, considering the stage, considering where South African cricket's been over the last couple of years, particularly their Test side,' he added. South Africa failed to make the WTC Final in the first two editions of the tournament but found a new direction under the pairing of head coach Shukri Conrad and skipper Temba Bavuma in January 2023. The Lord's win was their eighth successive victory in Tests, one short of their personal best. One of the changes in the South Africa setup under the new leadership was the return of Aiden Markram, who had been dropped from the tour of Australia in the 2022/23 season after an extended poor run with the bat. Markram repaid the faith reposed in him with a spectacular 115 on his return in February 2023, and has looked a more determined batter in the red-ball format since, as exemplified by his fighting ton against India on a tricky surface in Cape Town in January 2024 and his Lord's masterclass. 'To be able to stand up and perform like that when your team needs you the most is what reputations are made of. I think everyone has always known how good a player Markram was,' Ponting added. 'And I must admit, a couple of years ago, when South Africa toured Australia, I could not believe that Aiden Markram was not in that touring squad at all. He did not even make the squad.' 'And here we are a couple of years later and he has played one of probably his greatest knocks. I am sure if you asked him, he would probably say that that is the knock that he is most proud of in his Test career, and I am pretty sure his teammates who watched it all unfold would probably say the same thing.' 'So, it is a great individual achievement for him, and it's a magnificent achievement for the South African team,' he concluded. Coming to the match, on day first, Proteas won the toss and opted to bowl first. They dominated the first session with the ball, as fiery spells from Rabada (5/51) and Marco Jansen (3/49) reduced Australia to 67/4. A 79-run stand between Steve Smith (66 in 112 balls, with 10 fours) and Beau Webster (72 in 92 balls, with 11 fours) and a 46-run stand between Carey (23 in 31 balls, with four boundaries) and Webster took Australia to 212 all out. With the help of early two wickets from Starc and contributions from Cummins and Hazlewood helped Australia reduced South Africa to 43/4 at day one end, with Bavuma (3*) and Bedingham (0*) unbeaten. A six-fer from skipper Pat Cummins (6/28) helped Australia bundle out Proteas for 138 runs and secure a 74-run lead, despite a half-century run-stand between skipper Temba Bavuma (36 in 84 balls, with four boundaries and a six) and David Bedingham (45 in 111 balls, with six fours). In their second innings, Australia was reduced to 73/7, but a 61-run stand between Alex Carey (46 in 50 balls, with five fours) and Mitchell Starc (58* in 136 balls, with five fours), who also put a last wicket stand of 59 runs with Josh Hazlewood. Australia was bundled out for 207 runs, leading by 281 runs. Rabada (4/59) and Ngidi (3/38) were the pick of the bowlers for South Africa. In the run-chase, Proteas lost Ryan Rickelton early, but a 61-run stand between Wiaan Mulder (27 in 50 balls, with five fours) and Markram put Proteas on track. An even gigantic, frustrating 147 run stand between Markram (136 in 207 balls, with 14 fours) and skipper Bavuma (66 in 134 balls, with five fours) followed, rattling Australia. Despite Starc (3/63) attempting to keep Aussies alive, Kyle Verreyne hit the winning runs for South Africa to take them to their first ICC title since the ICC Knockout 1998.
