Former wushu coach gets 13 years' jail, whipping for sexually assaulting 10-year-old girl

The Stara day ago
KUALA LUMPUR: A former wushu coach has been sentenced to 13 years in prison and four strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here after being found guilty of committing physical sexual assault against a 10-year-old girl.
Judge Tasnim Abu Bakar handed down the sentence after ruling that the defence had failed to raise a reasonable doubt in the case against Gjeblehim Bong Teck Fuu, 34.
"The court imposes a sentence of 13 years' imprisonment from today, along with four strokes of the cane. The accused is also ordered to undergo counselling throughout the imprisonment period and placed under police supervision for three years after completing his sentence," said the judge on Thursday (Aug 7).
The court then dismissed an application by defence counsel Tharamjit Singh for a stay of execution pending an appeal to the High Court.
Bong was charged with committing the offence in his capacity as a person in a position of trust, as the victim's coach, at a premises in Taman Sri Sentosa, Jalan Klang Lama, about 7.30pm on April 13, 2022.
He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, read together with Section 16(1) of the same Act.
Section 14(a) provides for a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment and whipping, while Section 16(1) carries a jail term of up to five years and not less than two strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
In mitigation, defence counsel Tharamjit Singh urged the court to impose a lenient sentence, citing that the accused had to care for his elderly mother.
However, deputy public prosecutor Nur Shakila Mohd Shariff pressed for a heavier sentence, arguing that the offence was serious and had caused lasting psychological trauma to the victim.
"The victim is a child in need of the highest level of legal protection. The accused exploited her vulnerability and trust. As her wushu coach, he was in a position of trust and should have acted as her protector and mentor.
"Instead, he abused that position for his gratification. We urge the court to impose a stiffer sentence to serve as a deterrent and clear warning to others," she submitted.
A total of eight prosecution witnesses and three defence witnesses, including the accused, were called to testify during the trial. – Bernama

Two friends deny robbing Chinese national of RM2.1m in Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR: Two friends have denied charges of robbing a Chinese national of RM2.1 million in a high-profile case. Mohd Syaqir Mohd Ami, 30, and Nur Mohamed Mahsar Mohamed Nor, 34, appeared in the Sessions Court today. They were accused alongside two others still at large of targeting Chen Kexue, 31, in Bukit Damansara. The stolen items included a RM1.2 million wristwatch, gold bars, cash, and mobile phones. The alleged robbery occurred on July 21 at a villa in Bukit Damansara. The charge falls under Section 395 of the Penal Code, carrying up to 20 years in prison and whipping. Deputy Public Prosecutor Nidzuan Abdul Latif opposed bail, citing the severity of the offence. He argued that the accused might flee, as one had attempted escape during arrest. If bail was granted, he requested RM60,000 each with strict reporting conditions. Defence lawyer Hazwan Hassan sought lower bail, citing his clients' financial struggles. Mohd Syaqir earns RM2,000 monthly and supports his mother battling cancer. He recently recovered from paralysis after an accident last year. Nur Mohamed Mahsar also earns RM2,000 and supports his wife and two children. The lawyer assured the court there was no flight risk. Judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin set bail at RM15,000 each with additional conditions. The case will next be mentioned on September 30. - Bernama

Unlicensed trader jailed 20 years, fined RM9m for FCPO fraud in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court has sentenced an unlicensed futures trader to 20 years in prison and a RM9 million fine for fraudulent activities. Judge Hamidah Mohamed Deril delivered the verdict after Mohd Azhidi Laili pleaded guilty to nine charges under the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007. Each charge carried a two-year jail term and a RM1 million fine, with sentences to run concurrently. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional 27 months of imprisonment after completing the initial sentence. Mohd Azhidi falsely posed as a futures trader between May 2013 and March 2014 in Kuala Lumpur. He deceived nine victims into investing RM1.45 million in a non-existent crude palm oil (FCPO) scheme under AmFutures Sdn Bhd. The court also sentenced him to two years for falsely representing himself as an AmFutures agent without a licence. This sentence will run concurrently with his other jail terms. The Securities Commission initially charged Mohd Azhidi on February 14, 2022, two days after his arrest. He was released on RM250,000 bail but later failed to attend court hearings and monthly reporting sessions. His bail was revoked on May 21, 2024, and he was ordered to serve his sentence from that date. The trial saw 28 prosecution witnesses, including seven victims, testify between February 2023 and March 2025. Mohd Azhidi initially claimed trial but later changed his plea to guilty. The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Izuddin Mohamad and a team of SC officers. Mohd Azhidi was represented by lawyer Al-Sabri Ahmad Kabri. - Bernama

Man sentenced to hang for murder of Bangladeshi worker in Kampung Gajah

IPOH: The High Court here today sentenced a man to death by hanging for killing a Bangladeshi worker in Sungai Kinta, Kampung Gajah, seven years ago. Judge Su Tiang Joo delivered the verdict after finding Mohamad Amier Amzar Mohamad Aspar, 28, guilty of murdering MD Ovaidul, 32, on December 15, 2018. The crime occurred between 8.20 pm and 10.25 pm under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Su stated that the murder was premeditated and carried out in a brutal manner. He noted the prolonged suffering inflicted on the victim before his death. The judge highlighted the accused's actions of beating the victim, taking him to the riverbank, and dumping his body to conceal evidence. Su ruled that the death penalty was appropriate given the severity of the crime. The accused was ordered to be hanged under Section 277 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The judge found more aggravating than mitigating factors in the case. These included witness interference and the deliberate disposal of the victim's body. Su emphasised that the law applies equally to all, regardless of nationality. MD Hossain Khan, the victim's brother, delivered a statement on behalf of his family in Bangladesh. He revealed that MD Ovaidul was the family's primary breadwinner. The victim had planned to return to Bangladesh to get married before his death. Hossain described his brother as a good son and the family's hope. He condemned the accused's inhumane actions against his brother. The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor JS Geetha. The accused was represented by lawyer V. Santhiran. Family members of the accused were seen crying after the verdict was announced. The trial involved 24 prosecution witnesses and one defence witness. The victim's body was found tied to a motorcycle in Sungai Kinta on December 18, 2018. - Bernama
