‘I came out of Shanghai with £400 to my name' – Kyren Wilson recalls incredible rise after £210k tournament win

The Sun2 days ago
KYREN WILSON bagged his first big tournament win of the new season following his Crucible misery – in the city where his career first properly began.
The Warrior, 33, defied comeback king Ali Carter in the Shanghai Masters final with a 11-9 success, which secured him £210,000.

The former world snooker champion – who eliminated Ronnie O'Sullivan and Zhao Xintong during the week in China – scored breaks of 129, 96, 80, 78, 105, 122 and 86 against the Captain.
It was in this location 10 years ago, when it was a ranking event, where Wilson announced himself to the sport by becoming the Master of Shanghai for the first time.
Wilson fistpunched when the win was confirmed, which happened three months after he departed early from the World Championship, another victim of the Crucible Curse.
The world No.2 told SunSport: 'Ten years ago, I didn't have a pot to p*** in.
"I think I came out to Shanghai with about £400 to my name. I just managed to win that and my career took off.
"I was very successful after that, very consistent. My life totally changed after that. I proved I was not a one-hit wonder.
'Ten years on and to win it now, when it's a prestigious invitational event, with the best 16 players and very good Chinese talent, is a massive feather in the cap.
'The biggest statement is that I went out in the first round of the World Championship, I've gone away, had time off and come back as hungry as I was last season.
'Very determined to get winning again. It was a massive kick in the teeth to go out in the first round of the Worlds.
'I'd like to say I always stay positive. But I didn't want it to go to a decider as Ali's strikerate this week has been phenomenal.
'We all know how gritty and determined he is. I was very conscious I had to take out that last clearance – and so happy I did that.
"You could see the emotions.'

Ryan Reynolds' £7.5m target's dad drops huge hint on record Wrexham transfer going through

A Wrexham transfer target's dad appears to have hinted that a record £7.5m move is close with a cryptic post, sparking fan excitement as the club gears up for the Championship Nathan Broadhead's dad appears to have dropped a major hint that his son is about to complete a move to Wrexham in a club-record deal. The Red Dragons, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, were reported to have tabled a £7.5million bid for the Ipswich Town forward last week. ‌ Broadhead, who was previously part of Wrexham's academy, joined the Tractor Boys from Everton for £1.5m in January 2023. He played a key role in Ipswich 's back-to-back promotions from League One and the Championship, before being restricted to just seven Premier League starts last season. ‌ Now in the final year of his contract at Portman Road, talks over the Wales international's proposed move were initially understood to be progressing well. The deal looked to have stalled at the weekend though due to injuries and transfer interest in other Ipswich attackers. ‌ However, the 27-year-old's dad, Mark Broadhead, has offered hope to Wrexham fans after sharing a cryptic post from his personal Facebook account. Simply captioned "12 years later," it shows an image of a young Nathan playing for Everton in 2013, followed by one of him celebrating a goal for Ipswich last year. The final picture, titled "Now," shows Nathan sporting a Wrexham shirt while kneeling on the pitch at the Racecourse Ground back in his academy days. While the deal has not been confirmed by either club, supporters have taken it as a sign that his return is imminent after a screengrab of the post was shared on X by the Fearless in Devotion fan account. One person replied: "That's all the info we need." While someone else posted: "As good as an official announcement, that." Another supporter wrote: "Someone may have just let it slip also outside the ground too." Ipswich fans also seemed convinced, with one adding: "You've got yourselves one hell of a player. Good luck this season." ‌ Broadhead has bagged 23 goals in 83 appearances for Ipswich in total and his arrival at Wrexham would be seen as a big coup. The Welsh side are preparing for their first campaign in the second tier for 43 years after securing promotion from League One in April. Manager Phil Parkinson has so far signed eight players this summer as he looks to improve his squad. Sheffield United striker Kieffer Moore became the latest addition on Tuesday, joining on a three-year contract in a deal reportedly worth £2m. ‌ Wrexham face a tough start to the season as they travel to face relegated Southampton on Saturday in their opening game. Liberato Cacace is another new face who signed up last month from Italian outfit Empoli, and the left-back is looking forward to getting started. Explaining why he signed, he told the BBC: "There was interest in Italy, but for me, I'm a big football fan as well. I watch a lot of football and I've always watched English football, from the Premier League to the Championship so I know the level I'm heading into. ‌ "It was always a big dream of mine to play in the UK. Obviously Wrexham having so much publicity in the media as well you could see what the club was like. It's a very exciting project and I'm also very excited to start the season as well." He added: "I've already had chats with the players and with the manager and I think I'm settling in pretty well. I'm a professional person as well so I always like to keep fit. I'm going to use every day to make sure that against Southampton I'll be ready to go." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Edinburgh City have today been hit with a 15-point deduction by the Scottish Professional Football League relating to an insolvency event. The League Two side appointed a provisional liquidator in July this year, and league officials have reacted with a hefty punishment to leave City isolated at the foot of the table. An SPFL statement read: 'The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has today confirmed the imposition of a 15-point deduction for Edinburgh City, as per SPFL rules on clubs suffering an insolvency event. This deduction follows a provisional liquidator being appointed in respect of the club on July 22 this year in relation to an unpaid debt due by the club. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Similar to administration, the provisional appointment of a liquidator is an insolvency event under SPFL Rules. The William Hill League Two table has been updated accordingly.' Rule E1 of the SPFL rules and regulations states that 'where a club takes, suffers or is subject to a deductible insolvency event that club shall…be deducted 15 points and 5 points in the League in consecutive seasons'. City intend to appeal the decision and posted a comment on their social media channels. 'Edinburgh City FC hereby acknowledges the penalty imposed upon it by the SPFL this morning,' they said. 'The club will begin its appeal process immediately. No further comment will be made at this time.' Edinburgh City began their League Two campaign on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat against Stirling Albion at Meadowbank. Their Premier Sports Cup campaign ended miserably with 4-1 and 4-0 defeats against Partick Thistle and Queen of the South respectively. Following a 0-0 draw with Stranraer - City won 5-3 on penalties - the Capital side then suffered a demoralising 8-0 loss at Ross County. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad SPFL League Two table sees Edinburgh club rooted at the bottom A difficult start to the season has now gone from bad to worse with a points deduction which will leave Michael McIndoe's team battling to avoid relegation to the Lowland League this season. As an instant result of today's SPFL sanction, they have been left 15 points adrift at the bottom of League Two. The SPFL moved to deduct Hamilton Academical 15 points last season for breaking various league rules, which led to their relegation from the Championship to League One. Accies also appealed at the time but an independent Scottish FA disciplinary tribunal found the Lanarkshire club guilty of four offences, including the non-payment of players and not acting in "good faith" when dealing with the governing body regarding a previous transfer ban. Hamilton chairman Jock Brown said in a statement at the time: 'The club is obviously very disappointed at the outcome of the appeal to the SFA tribunal, where the decision of the SPFL tribunal was upheld with the result that the 15-point deduction stands. The board is prevented from making any further comment on the matter by SPFL regulations but will communicate further with supporters in early course.'

Championship top scorer odds: Top scorer odds for Championship betting for the 2025/26 season

The Championship Golden Boot is the most prestigious individual honour a player can win in the second tier, with stars of every ilk winning the award in the past – from Championship legends to Premier League stalwarts and full England internationals. The Golden Boot is awarded to the player who scores the most goals each season, and top scorer betting has become one of the most popular individual football betting markets in the UK, offering an alternative betting angle to punters seeking alternatives to team-based wagers. Top scorer odds are available from all major betting sites, which open the betting in pre-season and run a market throughout the campaign. This page will detail Championship top scorer odds for the 2025/26 season. We use the latest Championship top goal scorer odds from the best football betting sites to offer readers optimum value on wagering on this popular market. Readers will find the best prices for Championship top scorer betting on this page, with odds updated automatically throughout the season as and when betting sites make their alterations. All top Championship scorer odds come from recommended bookmakers, all of which are licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. Championship top scorer betting Championship top scorer betting involves placing a wager on the player who will score the most goals in the league across the full season. Note that only goals scored in the league count, with any goals netted in the cup competitions not counting towards the prize. Of course, strikers and attacking midfielders tend to dominate this market, with a tally of around 25+ usually proving enough to win the golden boot. Nevertheless, there are outliers, with Aleksandar Mitrovic scoring 43 in 2021/22 and Joel Piroe winning with just 19 last season. In addition, top scorers do not necessarily come from the most successful sides. For example, Sammie Szmodics top scored in 2023/24 – when Blackburn finished 19th – and Chuba Akpom top scored in 2022/23. The volatility in the market makes it a good chance to target players with higher odds. Make sure to consider previous goal tallies, penalty duties, and team attacking stats before making any wager on the top scorer odds Championship market. Championship top scorer odds explained Bettors can wager on an outright winner in this market, or they can place each-way bets. Outright betting is simply a yes or no on whether a player will win the award. Each-way betting differs in that you can place a wager on a player to either win the award or to finish in the top three or four places, meaning that there's a greater chance of 'winning' the bet. In this market, most bookies will pay out each-way at 1/4 of the odds, so an each-way wager is better used on players with longer Championship odds. Note that odds will fluctuate throughout the season based on form, injuries, team performance and more. Championship top scorer betting: What happens if there's a tie? If two or more players finish level on goals, the Golden Boot is shared. Most bookmakers apply dead-heat rules for these bets, which means winnings are split based on the number of tied players. Dead-heat rules usually state that if two players finish tied for the award, you will get paid half of your stake at the full odds. If three players finish tied, you get a third of your stake at the full price, and so on. Past Championship top scorers Below, we've produced a table showing the Championship top scorers from the past 10 seasons. Keep in mind that it's not common for a player to win the award in two seasons due to the likelihood of the winning player being promoted (see Aleksandar Mitrovic) or even signed for a side in the Premier League (as happened when promoted Ipswich signed Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn).
