Hamilton agrees with Verstappen that Belgian GP should not have been delayed
Following a delay of one hour and 20 minutes – which the FIA said was due to 'poor visibility' – the race eventually got under way, albeit in a rolling start after four laps behind the safety car.
Hamilton was able to switch from intermediates to dry tyres after just seven racing laps.
And when it was put to Hamilton, who made up 11 places to finish seventh, that Verstappen claimed the race should have started immediately, he replied: 'I would agree. My car was set up for that, and they waited for it to dry. Especially at the end. It was a dry line with hardly any spray.'
There have been 49 driver/rider fatalities at Spa-Francorchamps in the last 100 years – most recently Dutch 18-year-old Dilano Van 't Hoff in 2023, and Frenchman Anthonie Hubert in a Formula Two race four years previously.
The last Formula One race at Silverstone also took place in wet conditions, and Hamilton, 40, continued: 'It was just a reaction to Silverstone.
'We sat down and spoke about it after Silverstone. Lots of drivers in the last race said we shouldn't have restarted, because of a lack of visibility. And as soon as someone up ahead said, 'visibility is pretty bad' which, it wasn't great but it wasn't as bad as the last race, they just decided to wait.
'They still did a good job. Of course we did miss some of the extreme wet weather racing, which would have been nice. But for some reason the spray here is like a fog.'

In 2021, the rain-hit race was abandoned after just two laps behind the safety car. Defending the decision to delay the start of Sunday's event, Hamilton's Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc said: 'On a track like this you cannot forget about the history and what has happened in the past so I would rather be safe than go early.'
Oscar Piastri, who won in Belgium to extend his championship lead over Lando Norris to 16 points, continued: 'We have given the FIA feedback that we would much rather be on the safe side.
'If you were being picky you might say we could have done one fewer lap behind the safety car but is the risk worth it?
'The first time we tried to start the race, with only Lando ahead, I couldn't see a thing, so you can imagine what it is like for the guys at the back.'

The 21-year-old had emerged as a potential target for the Hoops after catching the eye for Italy at the U21 European Championships. Nico Rosberg reveals Lewis Hamilton ‘dagger in the heart' moment at Mercedes
Nico Rosberg has weighed in on former teammate Lewis Hamilton 's situation at Ferrari, with the seven-time champion struggling since his blockbuster move to the racing giant. Rosberg was a natural understudy to Michael Schumacher, who he partnered for three years at Mercedes before the latter retired, but the arrival of Hamilton to the team rocked the boat somewhat. Rosberg, speaking on the Sky F1 podcast, suggested that Hamilton could call on that experience to settle him at Ferrari. The Briton has endured his worst-ever season so far, recently describing himself as 'hopeless' after being knocked out in Q2 before a 12th-place finish in Hungary last weekend. He has yet to finish on the podium this season. 'Unfortunately, there's a whole load of lobbying you can do as a driver, which would benefit you,' Rosberg said. 'That was one of Lewis' greatest strengths when I was fighting him at Mercedes. 'He was really good at building strong relationships with all the leadership. Suddenly, I would find out 'Lewis last night went for dinner in Stuttgart with Dieter Zetsche', who was the CEO of Daimler. 'It was like a dagger in the heart just to hear that, because who knows what they were talking about? He was very good at doing that, and he will need to be using those skills now at Ferrari, because it never hurts to get more and more support from the team.' Rosberg's pointed advice comes with Hamilton markedly behind his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc by nearly every measure. The Monegasque took pole at the Hungaroring before finishing fourth, and is one place and 42 points above the Brit in the overall standings, in fifth. He has five podiums this season to Hamilton's none. Leclerc also leads his teammate 10-4 in the qualifying stakes, with Hamilton at an average deficit of 0.2 seconds to his teammate over the season so far. His poor qualifying lap times have put him on the back foot when it comes to picking up race day results - and perhaps too in the Ferrari pecking order.

Alpine make Franco Colapinto axe decision after latest blow in testing crash
Argentine racer Franco Colapinto has yet to score a point for Alpine since replacing Jack Doohan earlier this season and there is increasing pressure on his place in Formula 1 Franco Colapinto is set to get the rest of the season to save his Formula 1 career. The Argentine's place with Alpine has been under increasing scrutiny amid his failure to score a single point since replacing Jack Doohan earlier this year. Colapinto was signed in the off-season from Williams, who had fielded him nine times in the 2024 campaign but had no room in their driver line-up to retain him this year. He joined Alpine initially as a reserve driver, his presence alone suggesting Doohan's days were numbered. And that turned out to be the case. Just six rounds into the season, having failed to register a point, Doohan was dropped back into a reserve role and Colapinto elevated into a race seat. The Alpine press release announcing that switch in May stated that Colapinto had been given an initial five-race period to show what he could do. Eight events later and the 22-year-old remains in the seat. That is despite some uninspiring results and a failed to score a point so far. He has finished above 15th place in a Grand Prix just twice so far, thanks to a couple of 13th-placed results in Monaco and Canada. He did not help his case this week by crashing in a Pirelli tyre test at the Hungaroring. An Alpine spokesperson confirmed that Colapinto had been assessed by medics on site and was uninjured despite losing control of the car at turn 11 and burying the car into a barrier. Yet, there has been patience shown to him by the team and its leader Flavio Briatore. The Italian, who is technically an adviser to the Renault board but who has been given full control of the struggling F1 outfit, has publicly called for more time to be given to Colapinto. And that seems to be what the team is set to do in terms of its immediate plans for that seat. As it stands, Colapinto will continue to race for the team after the summer break and could get until the end of the season to find improved form, reports PlanetF1. Doohan remains eager for a second chance to show what he can do, while Alpine also have Paul Aron on the books and waiting for his first chance to race in F1. The Estonian racer finished third in last year's Formula 2 championship, behind Isack Hadjar and title-winner Gabriel Bortoleto. Both of them have graduated to F1 while Aron signed a reserve deal with Alpine and has represented both the Enstone team and Sauber in practice sessions so far this year.
