Report: Mavs C Daniel Gafford to sign 3-year, $60M extension

Miami Herald24-06-2025
Center Daniel Gafford, a key piece of the formidable frontcourt for the Dallas Mavericks, will sign a three-year contract extension worth close to $60 million, ESPN reported on Monday.
Other media outlets reported that Gafford's deal will be worth $54 million.
In 2025-26, the 26-year-old Gafford is set to earn $14.4 million -- per Spotrac -- in the final year of a three-year, $40.2 million contract extension he signed in 2021 with the Washington Wizards.
According to ESPN, Gafford's agents -- Mike George and Shy Saee of Klutch Sports -- worked with Dallas officials on the new deal, which runs through the 2028-29 season.
Gafford, who joined the Mavericks in a trade with the Wizards in February 2024 and helped Dallas reach the NBA Finals that spring, will again team up with Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively II in the frontcourt. That trio is expected to be joined by Duke star Cooper Flagg with Dallas holding the No. 1 pick in Wednesday's NBA Draft.
A second-round pick of the Chicago Bulls in the 2019 draft, Gafford is an impressive finisher, boasting the highest career field goal percentage (71 percent) in the NBA since he entered the league. In 2023-24, he led the NBA in field goal percentage at 72.5 percent.
In six seasons with the Bulls (2019-21), Wizards (2021-24) and Mavericks, Gafford has averaged 9.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game over 378 games (215 starts).

Lu Dort has NBA 2K26 rating revealed

As the NBA is in its driest part of the calendar, NBA 2K has taken advantage. In anticipation of its NBA 2K26 release, the annual video game has slowly rolled out the top 100 rated players. It's a tradition that sparks conversations as fans across the league argue their guy should be higher. Fresh off an NBA championship, the Oklahoma City Thunder are prominently featured in the list. They have five players among the top 100. That shouldn't be a surprise. After all, they had one of the greatest seasons ever with a historic 68-14 regular-season record and a Larry O'Brien trophy. One of those top 100 players is Lu Dort. He has an 81 overall ranking, which ranks No. 84. Other Thunder players in the top 100 are Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein. Dort had a career season where he finally won some individual accolades for his one-on-one defense. He was named to his first All-Defensive Team and finished fourth in Defensive Player of the Year. He also averaged 10.1 points and 4.1 rebounds while shooting 41.2% from 3 on 5.8 attempts. The Thunder had one of the best defenses the NBA has ever seen last season. That side of the ball carried them to a championship. Dort headlined their defense by shutting down the opposition's best perimeter scorers. He's the reason why OKC only gave up a handful of 30-plus point scorers.

I Don't Care What Steph Curry Says, Google's AI Doesn't Know Ball

Google announced a multiyear deal with NBA star Steph Curry on Wednesday at its Made by Google event. As part of the deal, Curry will use AI from Google's Cloud to get better at the game he's played for years. And while I respect Curry landing this gig, no one can convince me that AI knows ball. Let's start with the idea that 11-time All-Star, 4-time NBA Champ and 2-time Scoring Champ (to name a few of his accolades) Stephen Curry knows less about basketball than Google's AI. That's absurd. Did you see those awards? Curry is one of the most dominant players of this generation, hands down. Google thinks it can help Curry improve his shooting and workout plans through its AI Basketball Coach. The "coach" will analyze Curry's form and give him feedback. "He'll utilize our AI Basketball Coach experience, which incorporates Gemini models on Vertex AI and MediaPipe to provide detailed form analysis, visual feedback and personalized coaching tips," Google wrote in a blog post. Again, absurd. Curry and the Golden State Warriors didn't win the championship this past year, but he still led the league in average 3-point field goals made per game and free-throw shooting percentage, shooting 93.3% from the line. So if there's one thing Curry knows how to do, it's shoot the ball. What's the AI going to tell him? Keep doing exactly what you're doing? Stellar advice. According to Google, the coach films some of your jumpshots, analyzes things like ball trajectory and outcome, and then gives you feedback on how to improve. Maybe this could help your jumpshot, but it can't give you coaching tips on any other aspect of the game. The AI doesn't touch on defense, ball handling or anything else. Does the AI know what to do when someone like 7'3" Victor Wembanyama has their hand in your face? Maybe it tells you to shoot the ball into outer space and hope for the best. What about when you're going up against Domantas Sabonis for a rebound? Does the AI know how to stop the monster that is Nikola Jokic, who was one of the league leaders last season in points made per game, assists, rebounds and steals? No, but Jokic loves his horses, so maybe if you ask him about them, he'll be distracted. Google's AI can't help in these scenarios because it's just supposed to help you learn how to improve your jumpshot. That's a nice tool to have, but when you play against someone like Lebron James, you're going to need a whole lot more than that to win. Maybe Google's AI basketball coach can help teach someone how to shoot the ball, but that's about it. And even then, the best way to learn how to shoot is to get out there and play.
