Remains are found at 'mass burial site' amid fears hundreds of girls and women were raped and murdered at Indian holy site

Daily Mail31-07-2025
The first human remains have been found in an investigation into the alleged secret burial of hundreds of women and girls, many showing signs of sexual assault, over two decades in the holy Indian town of Dharmasthala.
In July, a former sanitation worker at the 800-year-old Dharmasthala Temple returned to the quiet town in southern India to make a startling confession to the police.
He claimed that between 1998 and 2014, he was forced to secretly dispose of hundreds of bodies of women and minors, many of which showed signs of brutal violence and sexual assault, in unmarked and random sites around the sacred town in the Karnataka state.
According to the whistleblower's complaint, he worked for the revered temple under duress for nearly 20 years before fleeing into hiding with his family in 2014.
Provoked by guilt and shame, he re-surfaced over a decade later to demand the exhumation of the hundreds of corpses who he alleged were systematically abused and murdered, and who he was told to secretly dispose of.
On Thursday, a special investigation team uncovered the first skeletal remains in an exhumation of one of 15 suspected locations linked to mass burials identified by the former sanitation worker.
The 'partial skeleton' was located at the one of the sites along the banks of the Netravati river - where seven other mass graves are said to be.
Sources reported that the human remains were in a 'highly decayed state', according to India Today.
The whistleblower's complaint has shone a light on hundreds of cases of women and girls who were reported missing or found dead around Dharmasthala over the years, but whose situations were not properly investigated by the police.
'Here is the individual who says that it is not the fear of law but the fear of conscience and fear for morality that has brought him back,' the sanitation worker's lawyer, KV Dhananjay, told the Independent.
'In the last 100 years of court judgments, you don't find a parallel.'
Earlier in July, the former sanitation worker appeared before a Belthangady court, garbed in a black hood to withhold his identity, where he presented skeletal remains that he claimed were taken from one of the mass grave sites of sexual assault victims.
The town of Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada is a major Hindu pilgrimage site, with the Dharmasthala Temple attracting around 2,000 visitors per day.
The whistleblower, from the Dalit community, the lowest rung of the caste system, described in his police complaint how he would find corpses washed up on the riverbank. At first, he assumed the deaths were by suicide, but he soon noticed that most of the bodies were women, many were in states of undress and some showed signs of violence.
It wasn't until 1998 that he was first asked to 'secretly dispose of the bodies', he claimed, adding that when he refused, he was physically attacked.
Protesters demonstrate on July 21, demanding a reinvestigation into the rape and murder case of Sowjanya, a 17-year-old girl who died near Snanaghatta in Dharmastala in 2012

'We will cut you into pieces. Your body will also be buried like the other corpses. We will sacrifice all your family members,' he alleged he was told.
He escaped the town in 2014, after 'the mental torture I was experiencing became unbearable'. He and his family fled to a neighbouring state and went into hiding for fear of their safety.
On July 15, a 60-year-old Bengaluru woman submitted a petition to the police, demanding officials find the 'skeletal remains' of her daughter who went missing in 2003 when she visited the temple town of Dharmasthala with her friends.
A week later, a group of women marched towards the temple in protest, demanding justice for 17-year-old Sowjanya, a college student from Belthangady who was reportedly raped and murdered in Dharmasthala in 2012 but whose killer was never found.
The investigation is expected to continue as more alleged mass grave sites throughout the holy town are exhumed in the coming weeks and days.
Current reports suggest the remains discovered today are most likely of a male.
According to the whistleblower, impoverished men were also murdered in the town and similarly buried.
In a statement from on Sunday 20 July, the temple authorities said they endorse a 'fair and transparent' investigation.
'Truth and belief form the foundation of a society's ethics and values. We sincerely hope and strongly urge the Special Investigation Team to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and bring the true facts to light,' said K Parshwanath Jain, the official spokesperson for Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala.

Gym trainers accused of beating man to death after altercation in protein supplement shop

Police in India have arrested two gym trainers on suspicion of killing a man during a violent altercation inside their nutrition supplement shop. Investigators said Gopinath Varpe, 35, entered the Protein Puzzle Shop in Charholi near Pune city in Maharashtra state on Wednesday afternoon and started verbally abusing Pranjal Taware, 22, before causing a disturbance. The argument escalated into a fight during which Ms Taware and shop co-owner Yash Patole, 25, allegedly struck Varpe multiple times on the head and body with metal rods. Varpe was taken to hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. Assistant police commissioner Vishal Hire told the Times of India that Varpe knew the woman and that he had gone to the shop and abused her the previous day as well. An unnamed police officer told the newspaper that Varpe had started harassing Taware after she stopped talking to him about eight months ago. 'This incident happened near Charholi Phata. The deceased started chaos and abused the accused duo by coming to their shop in the afternoon,' deputy commissioner of police Bapu Bangar said. 'They murdered Varpe with an iron rod, hitting him on the head and body.' The suspects fled after the incident but later surrendered to police, Mr Bangar said. 'Dighi police are registering a case of murder and common intention. We are investigating the matter further,' he was quoted as saying by the Free Press Journal. The duo were charged with murder under India's newly introduced criminal code Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.

Man accused of faking death to avoid rape charges guilty of sexual assault

A Rhode Island man accused of faking his death and fleeing the United States to evade rape charges was found guilty of sexually assaulting a former girlfriend in his first of two Utah trials. A jury in Salt Lake County found Nicholas Rossi guilty of a 2008 rape after a three-day trial in which his accuser and her parents took the stand. He will be sentenced in the case on October 20 and is set to stand trial in September for another rape charge in Utah County. First-degree felony rape carries a punishment in Utah of five years to life in prison, said Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill. Mr Gill said: 'We are grateful to the survivor in this case for her willingness to come forward, years after this attack took place. Advertisement 'We appreciate her patience as we worked to bring the defendant back to Salt Lake County so that this trial could take place and she could get justice. 'It took courage and bravery to take the stand and confront her attacker to hold him accountable.' Utah authorities began searching for Rossi, whose legal name is Nicholas Alahverdian, when he was identified through a decade-old DNA rape kit in 2018. Nicholas Rossi was arrested in Scotland, but claimed he was the victim of mistaken identity. He was extradited to the US in January 2024 (Andrew Milligan/PA) He was among thousands of rape suspects identified and later charged when the state made a push to clear its rape kit backlog. Advertisement Months after he was charged in Utah County, an online obituary claimed Rossi had died on February 29 2020, of late-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma. But police in his home state of Rhode Island, along with his former lawyer and a former foster family, cast doubt on whether he was dead. He was arrested in Scotland the following year while receiving treatment for Covid-19 after hospital staff in Glasgow recognised his distinctive tattoos from an Interpol notice. Rossi said he was the victim of mistaken identity, claiming to be an Irish orphan named Arthur Knight who was being framed. Advertisement Months of court proceedings in Edinburgh followed but in November 2022, Sheriff Norman McFadyen determined the man claiming to be Knight was indeed Rossi. A hearing took place in June 2023, with Sheriff McFadyen ruling there was no barrier to Rossi's extradition. An extradition warrant was signed in September 2023 and Rossi was finally sent to the US in January 2024. Investigators say they identified at least a dozen aliases Rossi used over the years to evade capture. Throughout trials in Scotland and the US, Rossi appeared in a wheelchair and sometimes with an oxygen mask (Andrew Milligan/PA) He appeared in court this week in a wheelchair, wearing a suit and tie and using an oxygen tank. Advertisement Throughout the trial, prosecutors painted a picture of an intelligent man who used his charm to take advantage of a vulnerable young woman. She was living with her parents and recovering from a traumatic brain injury when she responded to a personal ad Rossi posted on Craigslist. They began dating and were engaged within about two weeks. On Monday, the woman described being asked to pay for their dates, cover Rossi's car repairs, lend him 1,000 dollars so he wouldn't be evicted from his apartment and take on debt to buy their engagement rings. He grew hostile soon after their engagement and raped her in his bedroom one night after she drove him home, she testified. The woman said dismissive comments from her parents convinced her not to go to the police at the time. She came forward a decade later after she saw him in the news and learned he was accused of another rape from the same year. Rossi's lawyers sought to convince the jury that his accuser built up years of resentment after he made her foot the bill for everything in their month-long relationship. They argued she accused him of rape to get back at him years later, when he was getting media attention. Nicholas Rossi is set to stand trial in September for another rape charge in Utah County (Firecrest Films/AP) Lawyers for Rossi did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment after the verdict. Rossi's accuser in the Utah County case did, however, go to the police at the time. She gave evidence on Tuesday about her own experiences with Rossi, though he will not stand trial for that rape charge until next month. Rossi is accused of attacking the second woman, another former girlfriend, at his apartment in Orem in September 2008 after she came to collect money she said he stole from her to buy a computer. When police initially interviewed Rossi, he claimed she had raped him and threatened to have him killed. Rossi grew up in foster homes in Rhode Island and had returned there before allegedly faking his death. He was previously wanted in the state for failing to register as a sex offender. The FBI has said he also faces fraud charges in Ohio, where he was convicted of sex-related charges in 2008.
