Measles strikes at birth: Six Canadian newborns infected from unvaccinated mothers
Representational image
Six babies have been born with measles in Ontario after catching the virus in the womb — all of them born to mothers who weren't vaccinated.
Ontario's top doctor, Kieran Moore, told The Guardian that the infants are now recovering, but he emphasized that these infections could've been avoided with routine vaccines.
The cases are part of a growing measles outbreak — the biggest in the western hemisphere since late last year.
Canada had officially wiped out measles back in 1998, meaning it wasn't spreading regularly anymore. But with more than 2,000 cases reported in Ontario since October — more than the entire U.S. so far this year — that status could be in jeopardy.
The measles vaccine isn't given during pregnancy because it contains a live virus.
But if an unvaccinated pregnant person is exposed to measles, doctors recommend a dose of intravenous immunoglobulin to help prevent infection. Still, some people refuse that too, often for personal or philosophical reasons.
What is
congenital measles
?
Congenital measles is when a baby is born already infected with the measles virus. It happens when a pregnant woman catches measles and passes it on to their baby before birth. While measles is dangerous at any age, it can be especially serious for newborns — and even more so when they're exposed to it before they're even born.

Normally, babies get some natural protection from their mother's immune system while they're in the womb. But if the mom hasn't been vaccinated and gets infected with measles during pregnancy, that protection isn't there — and the virus can pass straight to the fetus.
This kind of early exposure can lead to all sorts of complications. Congenital measles can cause a baby to be born too early (premature), have a low birth weight, or develop serious issues like brain inflammation (known as encephalitis).
In really severe cases, it can even lead to death.
The scary part? This is something that's usually preventable. The measles vaccine (MMR) is super effective and has been around for decades. But it's not given during pregnancy because it contains a live virus. That's why it's so important to get vaccinated before becoming pregnant — or, if already pregnant and exposed to measles, to talk to a doctor about getting immune protection another way, like through intravenous immunoglobulin.
While congenital measles is rare — especially in countries with high vaccination rates — outbreaks and rising vaccine hesitancy have made it more of a concern lately. With strong public health programs and informed choices, it's a risk that can be reduced, if not entirely avoided.

Sedentary lifestyle leads to rise in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease among young adults
Bengaluru: At first glance, most people wouldn't think twice about fatigue, occasional discomfort or a slightly abnormal report during routine a check-up. However, doctors in Bengaluru say these signals are now linked to something more serious: fatty liver disease, specifically, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Since Covid-19 pandemic, city hospitals reported a 30% increase in NAFLD cases, with a noticeable surge among young adults in their 20s and 30s. Unlike traditional liver disease linked to alcohol use, this condition stems from poor lifestyle, long hours of desk work, processed food, irregular meals and physical inactivity. Dr Santhosh Kumar S C, consultant, gastroenterology at Fortis Hospital, said, "We're seeing a sharp rise in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, with over 10 patients on average per day. The main reason: Obesity." He said NAFLD cases are being observed across socio-economic groups. A person sitting at a paan stall all day, an autorickshaw or cab driver, anyone with a sedentary lifestyle is vulnerable. There are two broad types of fatty liver - alcoholic and non-alcoholic. While alcoholic fatty liver was more common earlier, now people with no or limited alcohol use are being diagnosed due to carb-heavy diets, inactivity, and prolonged sitting, he explained. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Dr Harshavardhan Rao B, head of department and consultant, medical gastroenterology, Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, said, "Fatty liver isn't just about fat, it's a warning sign for your metabolism. It's now called metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease or MAFLD because it reflects the combined impact of diabetes, hypertension, obesity, abnormal cholesterol, poor diet, lack of physical activity, and even stress. " He noted a clear shift after the pandemic. "Many switched to a sedentary work-from-home lifestyle, relied on outside food, and faced longer working hours, all of which pushed physical and mental health to the back seat. As a result, we're seeing more people diagnosed incidentally with fatty liver on routine scans." MAFLD often progresses in stages, beginning with fat accumulation, followed by inflammation, and then, in some cases, fibrosis, cirrhosis, or even cancer. Many patients show no symptoms until liver damage is already underway, highlighted Dr Rao. However, the condition is often reversible in its early stages. Changes in diet, increased physical activity, regular sleep, and health checks can prevent progression. Dr Vinay Kumar B R, hepatologist and liver transplantation specialist, Narayana Health City, said, "In Bengaluru, especially among IT professionals and those with desk jobs, we see a significant rise in both diabetes and fatty liver. It's now common to find some degree of fatty liver in two to three out of every five patients during routine scans or blood tests." Dr Balaji Gurrappa, consultant, gastroenterology, Kauvery Hospital, added, "In women, Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) and use of hormonal pills can also increase risk." Indian-origin doctor Mona Ghosh sentenced to 10 years in prison in US for $2.4 million medical fraud
Dr Mona Ghosh sentenced to 10 years in prison in the US for medical fraud. Indian-American physician Dr Moa Ghosh (OB-GYN) who pleaded guilty last year to the fraud charges has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the $2.4 million medical fraud that she committed through her medical office. The 52-year-old submitted fraudulent claims to insurers for procedures which were not medically necessary, including endometrial ablations and biopsies, ultrasounds, vaccinations, laboratory blood tests, and tests for sexually transmitted diseases. The practice went on from 2018 to 2022. Ghosh inflated the length and complexity of in-office and telemedicine visits and submitted claims using billing codes for which the visits did not qualify in order to seek higher reimbursement rates. Ghosh prepared false patient medical records to support the fraudulent reimbursement claims. 'When physicians submit fraudulent claims to federal health care programs, they divert taxpayer-funded resources away from those who truly need them,' said US Attorney Boutros. 'Dr Ghosh's fraud scheme was particularly egregious because she endangered the health of her patients by performing unnecessary medical procedures, including procedures that severely limited some patients' ability to have children in the future. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo We applaud the victims' strength to come forward and confront this defendant. 'The depraved conduct uncovered in this case represents an extreme betrayal of trust toward patients who were simply seeking care and integrity from their doctor. The FBI will continue to aggressively pursue and hold accountable any medical professional who seeks to harm patients for their personal enrichment. ' The convicted doctor has been ordered to pay approximately $1.5 million in restitution.
