Wonder Why Its Called a Frankie? The Delicious Backstory Of Mumbais Iconic Roll
The Mystery Behind The Name:
Believe it or not, these mouthwatering rolls did not have a name at first. The story goes back to 1967, when founder Amarjit Singh was watching a historic India vs West Indies cricket match.
As former West Indies captain Sir Frank Worrell hit a sixer, the crowd erupted, chanting "Frankie!" Inspired by the moment, Singh decided to name his creation after that cheer, hoping his rolls would one day be celebrated with the same enthusiasm. And just like that, the Frankie was born.

How It All Began: The Origin Of Frankie In Mumbai
If reports are to be believed, the idea for Tibbs Frankie took shape when Amarjit Singh was returning to India via Beirut and tasted soft, pillowy pita bread. Intrigued, he began experimenting with Indian flavours and textures alongside his wife and co-founder, Surinder Kaur Tibb.
After three years of trials, they introduced a roll that combined juicy Indian gravies, fresh veggies, and their signature masalas, all wrapped in a roti. Their first offering? A mutton curry roll sold from the backseat of their car near Powai Lake. And as obvious, it was an instant hit.

Why Frankie Works And How Is It Different From Kolkata Roll:
There is a reason Frankie has stood the test of time. It is customisable, portable, and deeply satisfying. The paratha is soft yet sturdy, the filling is spicy and comforting, and the extras - onions, chutneys, sauces - add layers of flavour. It is the kind of snack that feels indulgent without being over the top.
Unlike Kolkata rolls that use flaky egg parathas or lean heavily on tandoori fillings, Mumbai's Frankie has its own identity. It is less about tradition and more about taste. And that is what makes it so versatile.
Today, you will find Frankies stuffed with everything from schezwan noodles to cheese-loaded mushrooms. But the original Tibbs-style Frankie still holds its ground, especially among loyalists who swear by the classic chicken or mutton versions.

Evolution Of The Menu: From Mutton Rolls To Modern Mashups
Frankie may have started with a simple mutton curry wrapped in a roti, but over the decades, its menu has grown into a vibrant tapestry of flavours that reflect changing tastes, dietary preferences, and regional influences.
1. The Classics:
The original Mutton Frankie remains a fan favourite, slow-cooked meat in a rich, spiced gravy, wrapped in a buttery roti.
Chicken Tikka Frankie and Egg Frankie soon followed, offering hearty, protein-packed options for meat lovers and eggetarians alike.
2. Vegetarian Delights:
As vegetarianism gained popularity, the Classic Veg Frankie, a spiced aloo patty with onions and chutneys, came into being.
Tawa Paneer Frankie and Chilly Paneer Frankie added North Indian and Indo-Chinese flair to the veg lineup.
3. Fusion And Regional Twists:
Responding to local palates, Frankie found its fusion flavours like Schezwan Chicken, Chettinad Chicken, and Bhuna Gosht Frankie, blending street food with regional spice profiles.
The Chipotle Veg Frankie and Cheesy Jalapeno Frankie cater to globalised tastes and Gen Z cravings.
How To Make Frankie-Style Rolls At Home: Chicken Frankie Recipe:
Step 1: Prepare the dough:
Knead maida with salt, oil, and water into a soft, sticky dough. Rest it with a layer of oil on top.
Step 2: Marinate the chicken:

Step 3. Cook the filling:
Saute onions and ginger garlic paste, add dry spices, then cook the marinated chicken till tender. Finish with garam masala and vinegar.
Step 4. Make the chutney and vinegar chillies:

Amitabh Bachchan called me during lockdown, says Radhika Madan: ‘Main behosh hogayi thi'
Amitabh Bachchan is known not only for his legendary career but also for being a generous supporter of fellow actors. One such heartwarming gesture came when he personally praised Radhika Madan for her performance in Angrezi Medium (2020). In a recent vlog hosted by Farah Khan, Radhika shared how the megastar sent her a handwritten letter and even called her in his iconic Kaun Banega Crorepati style. While giving a tour of her home, Radhika proudly showed Farah her collection of awards. Farah's eyes immediately landed on the framed letter from Amitabh Bachchan, prompting her to ask, 'Amit ji sent you a letter?' Beaming, Radhika replied, 'Amitabh Bachchan sent me this letter after watching Angrezi Medium.' 'You must have died, no?' Farah asked with dramatic flair. 'I completely lost it,' Radhika laughed. 'Main toh behosh ho gayi thi (I fainted)!' As Farah read through the letter, where Big B praised Radhika's acting, she jokingly protested, 'Amitabh sir, you have never written to me. Please, koi toh letter bhej do (send me one too)!' Radhika then shared another unforgettable moment. 'I got a call during the lockdown. I picked up and heard, 'Hi, main Amitabh Bachchan bol raha hoon.' For a second, it felt like I was on Kaun Banega Crorepati!' The mood lightened further when Farah turned to her staff member Dilip and teased, 'Look, Amitabh Bachchan wrote to her. Have you ever received a letter?' Dilip chuckled, 'No ma'am, even my wife doesn't write to me.' The conversation then moved to Radhika's love life. Farah asked, 'Are you crazy in love types?' To which Radhika replied with a laugh, 'I'm nas kata pyaar.' The dramatic statement had Farah visibly alarmed, exclaiming, 'Why is everyone obsessed with cutting nerves these days?' Watch Radhika explained that she's old-school when it comes to love. 'I still believe in writing letters,' she said. 'So you're a Raanjhanaa type of girl?' Farah asked. Radhika quickly disagreed, 'No, more like Veer Zaara.' When asked if she's a Shah Rukh Khan fan, Radhika said without hesitation, 'Of course, I am!' Then, channeling Salman Khan, she ran her thumb under her nose and added playfully, 'But I'm also a Bhai fan.' Farah offered an observation, 'Salman's films have always worked best when he's paired with a very Indian, sanskari kind of girl–like in Maine Pyaar Kiya and Tere Naam. That combo just works.' Radhika nodded enthusiastically, 'I love Bhai. Bhai is…' Before she could finish, Farah interjected, 'Can you not call him Bhai? Just say SK.' Radhika folded her hands in mock reverence, 'Salman sir.'

Despite being confronted, they refused to apologise. Instead, when questioned about their actions, the Indian-origin men suggested that the staff should display signs outlining the theatre man said, "If you had put up a sign outside, we wouldn't have done that." To which the staff member replied, "So, basically, you are saying you do not have common sense?" The staff appeared visibly upset by the response, as they said in the clip that it would be them who would have to clean up the mess after the audience could not independently verify the authenticity of the video and the claims being made in the video here: Since being uploaded online, the video has been reshared by several users across social media platforms. A section of the internet called the incident "unacceptable.""At least they could have said sorry and should have offered to clean up. That would have been more graceful than trying to argue it out," a user said, while another added, "Normalise calling idiots like this out at theatres. They are ruining the experience and taking the fun and excitement out of going.""Not one of them said sorry. He's justifying his actions till the end. Look at the arrogance of such people," a user this month, a video of a couple, seemingly Indian, dumping garbage by a roadside in Canada went viral, which drew sharp criticism online and sparked debate over public behaviour abroad. - Ends
