World's eyes on Birmingham for Black Sabbath homecoming gig
Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath's choice to play a final reunion gig in Birmingham has been described as a "homecoming" that recognises the city's status in music culture.The music icons will headline a one-day festival at Villa Park on 5 July dubbed "the greatest heavy metal show ever".The charity fundraiser will also feature dozens of other heavy metal legends, including Metallica, Pantera and Anthrax."It feels like the acknowledgement that this city's important," said local writer Kirsty Bosley. "We deserve this moment, and it deserves to be us."
The performance will mark the first time Black Sabbath's original line-up has played together in 20 years. Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward all grew up within a few streets of each other a stone's throw from the Aston stadium."It's a great honour," Iommi said. "It'll be really a homecoming."It was the only choice; it could only have been done here, nowhere else," Sharon Osbourne told BBC Radio WM."This is the home of metal. It started down the road with Sabbath. Ozzy's house is less than a mile away."
The Back To The Beginning show would definitely be 76-year-old Osbourne's last, his wife said.The singer has Parkinson's disease and proceeds from the concert will be going to the Cure Parkinson's charity, as well as local organisations Birmingham Children's Hospital and Acorn Children's Hospice.
Ms Bosley admitted she cried when she heard the concert announced."I've been going to heavy metal gigs in Brum for more than 20 years, and I felt like finally it's our time to host this amazing best-ever gig," she said."Metallica are arguably the biggest heavy metal band in the world, and I can't imagine for anyone else they would be a supporting act."
Osbourne and his bandmates' relevance to the city's cultural heritage was recently recognised with them being awarded the Freedom of Birmingham. In 2023, a public vote saw the large mechanical bull used in the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony named Ozzy, and a bridge over Birmingham Canal has also been renamed Black Sabbath Bridge.
Darren John, who has campaigned to save the Birmingham street where Black Sabbath performed their first gig at The Crown pub, predicted an influx to the city in July."You're talking about hundreds of thousands of people making a pilgrimage to Birmingham that weekend to see places like Ozzy's house or The Crown," he said."People will be flying in from all over the world for this," agreed Jez Collins from Birmingham Music Archive."The prodigal sons are returning to their physical, spiritual home of Aston Villa Park for what is undoubtedly one of, if not the greatest rock heavy-metal line-up I have seen."The world's eyes will be on our city."
Black Sabbath fan and musician Andy Edwards, from Kidderminster, remembered "a tear in his eye" when he watched Osbourne last perform, during the closing ceremony for the Commonwealth Games in 2022.He described news of the farewell gig as "incredible for music"."They started it and they're going to finish it," he said. "There's something about Black Sabbath that I think represents the Midlands so well."They're not artsy-fartsy but they're very creative, and I think that's what we are up here in the Midlands."
Matt Lewis from Coventry recalled meeting Osbourne a decade ago when asked to provide a balloon drop for a concert.He overheard a conversation in which Sharon was trying to convince Ozzy to have millions of bubbles blown across the stage."Ozzy just turned around and said to Sharon, 'Sharon, I'm the Prince of Darkness, I don't do bubbles.'"Mr Lewis went on to manage balloon drops during The End tour, which culminated at Birmingham's NEC in 2017.After a show in Dublin, Sharon demanded the number of balloons be increased from 200 to 1,000 for London and Birmingham."[It] was just spectacular," he said. "There was a blind panic to try and find 5,000 three-footers overnight, and we got them."
Huge demand is predicted when tickets go on sale from 10:00 GMT on 14 February.

He added: "I'm way more comfortable with The Crown than I am seeing the stories written about my family, or my wife, or myself." During a 2023 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Harry spoke candidly about how he feels about the show and its fictionalisation of his family. When asked by the TV host if he had ever watched the programme, Harry candidly said: "Yes, I have actually watched The Crown. The older stuff and the more recent stuff." Colbert then asked Harry whether he 'fact-checked' the show while watching. The Duke jokingly mimed as though he were taking notes, raising an eyebrow in jest – much to the delight of the audience, who erupted into laughter. He then paused before responding: "Umm... yes I do actually," which received more fits of giggles.. ITV Emmerdale viewers are convinced they've worked out who will take over the village shop, following Eric Pollard's confession that he will have to sell the business Emmerdale fans believe they've "cracked the case" of who will take over Eric Pollard's shop, and it's not David Metcalfe. The village shop has been a mainstay on the ITV soap since 2009, changing hands several times. This included to David (Matthew Wolfenden), who departed the village in 2023. Currently, David's dad Eric (Chris Chittell) has taken over with Tracy Robinson (Amy Walsh) regularly manning the till. However, as fans of the ITV soap will be aware, recent events have led viewers to question how long Eric will remain in charge, given his health slipping lower. Eric was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2023, and his condition has taken a turn for the worst in recent weeks. After a severe fall at home last week that landed him in hospital, Kerry Wyatt (Laura Norton) attempted to arrange a carer for his return home, reports Leicestershire Live. Following an unsuccessful trial with a carer after Eric found them to be unsuitable, he reluctantly agreed to let Kerry look after him, on the condition she accepted payment. If Eric didn't have enough to juggle with following the news of his health and his business hanging in the balance, he recently discovered his ex, Brenda Walker (Lesley Dunlop), won't be returning to the village following her departure back in April. Brenda sent Eric a card for his 80th birthday on Wednesday's episode earlier this week, informing him that she plans to continue "rediscovering herself" on the worldwide cruise she won. "I don't know why it is, but I always find a way to get rid of the ones that I really care for. I'm afraid, I'm a little bit too old for any change," Eric confessed. During Thursday's gripping hour-long episode, Kerry and Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) organised an unexpected party for Eric at the shop. Amid the celebrations, Kerry heard Eric relay to his mate Rodney Blackstock (Patrick Mower) his plans to flog the Wishing Well Barn and downsize. Subsequently, Eric experienced a change of heart and disclosed to Kerry his new intention to lease out the Barn on the off chance Brenda might come back to the village. "I've been thinking and I'm not going to sell. Despite what I said, there is the remotest possibility that Brenda might return. So, I'm going to rent it out and move next door," he said. Eric proceeded to extend an invitation to Kerry to relocate with him and Jacob. Despite Eric's hesitancy to part with the shop, many Emmerdale fans are certain they have cracked who could take over in upcoming episodes, with quite a few proposing the fresh face Kammy Hadiq (Shebz Miah). "Maybe Kammy's family will buy the shop, it's unusual to have a character in the soap and no house or family," speculated a user on a Facebook fan group. Another chimed in: "I'd love to see more of Kammy, what if he buys the shop from Eric?" while another fan quipped: "Yes to the Kammy redemption storyline." Ozzy Osbourne: Birmingham exhibitions to celebrate 'true Brummie icon'
Two city centre exhibitions dedicated to the achievements of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath are set to celebrate "a true Brummie icon", organisers say. The shows, to coincide with the band's final reunion gig in Birmingham in July, were "a thank you to the fans and the city of Birmingham – the place where it all began", said Sharon Osbourne, Ozzy's wife. "Ozzy is proof that no matter where you start in life, with passion, grit, and a little bit of madness, you can achieve the extraordinary. "We're so proud to bring it home." A free exhibition entitled Working Class Hero will run at the city's Museum and Art Gallery, showcasing the singer's most prestigious international honours, including Grammy Awards and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A selection of platinum and gold discs, recognising millions of record sales, will also be on show. Other photographs and videos chart Ozzy's journey from "a working class kid from Aston" to becoming one of the world's most recognisable rock stars. Further images showcasing the band's archive and iconic album artwork will also go on display in the city's Victoria Square. Artist Mr Murals has also created a 120ft (36.5m) mural depicting all four original members of Black Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward are being immortalised on Navigation Street near Grand Central Station, creating the "perfect spot for a Sabbath Selfie", said organisers. The exhibitions were a "celebration of our city's creativity, heritage and influence – and a chance for fans to walk in the footsteps of legends", said Sam Watson, chair of Central BID Birmingham, which has helped organise them. Together they form a "landmark tribute to one of the most influential rock bands in history", organisers said. "Celebrating the life and achievements of someone so deeply connected to the city aligns perfectly with our mission to reflect and share Birmingham's rich and diverse cultural heritage," added the joint chief executives of Birmingham Museums Trust, Sara Wajid and Zak Mensah. Working Class Hero will run at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery from 25 June to 28 September.
