HDFC Bank schedules service downtime on May 9–10: UPI, net banking, card transactions to be affected
HDFC Bank has announced scheduled maintenance on May 9 and 10, 2025, which will temporarily disrupt several of its key services including UPI transactions, net banking, debit/credit card usage, and loan and demat services.
The bank said these updates are part of routine infrastructure upgrades and have been deliberately timed for the early morning hours—typically low-traffic periods—to minimize inconvenience to customers.
On May 9, customers will face limited access to card-based services. Debit card transactions will be unavailable between 12:30 AM and 2:30 AM IST, affecting both online and offline usage, according to an ET report.

The bank's credit card services and statement features will also be down between 1:00 AM and 4:00 AM IST on May 9. Customers won't be able to perform credit card transactions or access/download their monthly statements during this three-hour maintenance window.

On May 10, a more comprehensive maintenance schedule will affect net banking and mobile app services. From 2:30 AM to 5:30 AM IST, users will be unable to access their account information, make payments, or initiate fund transfers. This includes key payment methods such as Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Immediate Payment Service (IMPS), National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT), and Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS).
Merchant payments and instant account opening will also be unavailable during this window.
The bank also announced temporary suspension of loan and demat services on May 10. Loan-related transactions will be down from 4:30 AM to 6:30 AM IST, while demat account activities, including trading and other associated services, will be inaccessible between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM IST.
Additionally, credit card services will experience another disruption on May 10 between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM IST.
During this time, users may face issues with transactions or accessing card-related features.
One of the most significant updates is a 4-hour downtime for UPI services on May 10, from 2:30 AM to 6:30 AM IST. The bank is upgrading its UPI infrastructure, and as a result, all UPI services—including those linked to HDFC savings and current accounts, RuPay credit cards, and third-party UPI apps—will be unavailable. Merchant UPI transactions routed via HDFC Bank will also be impacted.
HDFC Bank has advised its customers to complete any critical transactions ahead of these maintenance windows to avoid disruption. The bank emphasized that the maintenance is necessary to enhance service efficiency, reliability, and user experience across its digital platforms.
Customers are encouraged to stay updated through official communication from HDFC Bank and plan their banking activities accordingly during these brief but widespread service downtimes.

IRCTC's Ebitda growth rate mirrors pace of a slow-moving train
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corp. Ltd (IRCTC)'s results for the three months ended March (Q4FY25) proved unimpressive versus expectations of a solid quarter due to the Mahakumbh event-related push. Ebitda growth was 6% year-on-year to ₹385 crore, with margin compressing by almost 100 basis points to 30.4%. A basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point. Recall that IRCTC had offered food service in Aastha Express to Ayodhya in Q4FY24 during the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple. Thus, there was hope that it would be done for Mahakumbh special trains, too. In the Q4FY25 earnings call, the management clarified that these trains operated without catering facilities because the government's aim was to accommodate more passengers to Mahakumbh and also clear the subsequent rush from there. The outcome: IRCTC's catering revenue was unchanged year-on-year at ₹529 crore. The segment's profitability improvement isn't impressive either, as the base quarter had an abnormally low margin. Sequentially, the margin was flat at 12%. Also Read: KEC is making amends to repair margin, allay debt concerns IRCTC's mainstay business remains internet ticketing, contributing about 75% of its total FY25 Ebit. The segment has two revenue streams of convenience fee (simply put, the online ticket booking charges) and non-convenience fee from advertising and ancillary services for buying food, travel insurance, etc. Convenience fee grew 9% year-on-year as online ticket booking volume increased by 10%. While volume growth is not a problem, the concern here is about the 7% quarter-on-quarter fall in average fee per ticket to ₹18.6. The fee is different for AC and non-AC ticket booking, and also for booking payments made using Unified Payments Interface (UPI) or other modes that include netbanking and cards. The share of UPI-based payments has been steadily climbing up, from 45% in Q1FY25 to 47.7% in Q4FY25, which puts pressure on the average fee per ticket as the convenience fee is lower on payments made using UPI. Bright spot The tourism segment was the only bright spot in the results, which essentially is a packaged tour business offering options for religious and luxurious tours. Tourism Ebit soared by 161% on-year to ₹50 crore with margin almost doubling to 18.1% in Q4FY25. Bharat Gaurav train and Maharaja Express have contributed to the growth. Also Read: PMI: India's services exports bump may lose steam amid global economic gloom For FY25, the two trains clocked revenue of ₹277 crore and ₹92 crore, respectively. While Bharat Gaurav's revenue is higher, its margin is lower at 8% versus 18% of Maharaja Express, as the former operates in the affordable segment and the latter in the luxurious travel category. The management is optimistic that the tourism segment will maintain its upward trajectory, but the segment's past performance has been volatile. Meanwhile, IRCTC is likely to get initial approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a payment aggregation license within the next couple of months. However, even after the business starts, it would be tough to make inroads given the wafer-thin margin. The space is already crowded with well-entrenched players such as PhonePe and Razorpay. High valuation As such, the new business initiative is unlikely to change the trajectory of the stock, which is down 15% over the past one year even as the Ebitda CAGR over the last two years to FY25 has been 10%. The decline in the stock is thus indicative of the correction in its rich valuation. Ebitda is short for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation. Also Read: Ola Electric's new breakeven targets appear more like wishful thinking Bloomberg consensus estimates show Ebitda growth in FY26 could go up to 18%, which appears a tad optimistic. The decline in stock price pushes the enterprise value (EV) (numerator in EV/Ebitda) lower, while optimistic Ebitda estimates push the denominator higher. Despite that, the valuation still remains expensive at EV/Ebitda of 33x based on Bloomberg consensus estimates for FY26.

Cyber fraud in India: Finance ministry pushes for insurance coverage amid rising threats
Rohit Mehta is an Indian blogger, author and entrepreneur. He owns a blog named Digital Gabbar which is Available in English & Hindi. Rohit has been in the digital marketing and IT sector for over 10 years. He can be reached at Facebook, Instagram or Twitter (@bloggermehta). LESS ... MORE Cyber fraud in India: Finance ministry pushes for insurance coverage amid rising threats In recent years, cyber fraud has become a major concern in India, with a sharp rise in digital financial crimes affecting thousands of individuals. Victims are often left with heavy monetary losses and little recourse. In response to this alarming trend, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has instructed all government insurance companies to introduce products that specifically cover risks related to cyber fraud. This step is aimed at protecting consumers from digital threats and adapting the insurance sector to India's fast-changing digital economy. The urgent need for cyber insurance According to recent data, insurance frauds in India cost people ₹1.77 billion in 2024—almost double the loss compared to previous years. This rising threat has prompted the government to call for urgent action. Finance Minister Sitharaman, in a recent review meeting with public insurance companies, emphasized that customer needs are evolving rapidly, and insurers must innovate accordingly. One such innovation is cyber fraud insurance, which could safeguard users from phishing scams, identity theft, UPI frauds, and unauthorized online transactions. Faster grievance redressal for customers A major component of the Finance Ministry's directive is to improve customer service. Insurers have been asked to: Launch affordable and accessible insurance products Ensure digital transformation to make services seamless Prioritize quick resolution of customer complaints Engage more actively with customers via social media and digital platforms The idea is to build trust and make the insurance process simpler and more responsive to the modern consumer's needs. Why this policy shift is crucial The push for cyber insurance isn't just a precaution—it's a necessity. Despite government efforts to expand insurance access, India's general insurance penetration is still only 1% of GDP, significantly lower than the global average of 4.2%. Additionally, while the per capita insurance premium in India has increased from $19 to $25 over the last five years, it still falls short when compared to global standards. The Finance Ministry believes that expanding cyber coverage could boost insurance adoption, especially among the tech-savvy youth and digital-first businesses. AI-powered claims and logical pricing To improve efficiency, the Ministry has also proposed the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to streamline: Claim processing models Pricing mechanisms Fraud detection systems AI can help insurers identify false claims, speed up genuine ones, and reduce manual errors, creating a more transparent and trustworthy environment. Government vs. private: Claim ratios and trends Interestingly, public sector insurance companies tend to have higher claim settlement ratios than private ones. For instance: In FY 2021: Government insurers' health claim ratio: 126% Private insurers' health claim ratio: 105% In FY 2023-24: Government insurers' health claim ratio dropped to 103% Private insurers' to 89% This decline suggests better claim management post-COVID but also emphasizes the need for balance between profitability and customer support. Final thoughts: A digital safety net for India Cyber fraud is not just a technological issue—it's a national economic challenge. By launching insurance products specifically designed to protect citizens against cyber threats, India is taking a proactive step toward building a digitally secure economy. With the Finance Ministry's intervention, cyber fraud insurance could soon become as essential as health or car insurance, offering peace of mind to millions.
