Pocket-sized fun, fame: Instagram loves urban India's micro-pet affair

India Today3 days ago
Eight-year-old Mahi (name changed) from Bengaluru has found an unusual best friend—her four-inch-long pet sugar glider, Tofu. Every evening, she gently feeds Tofu tiny slices of apple and watches him glide between curtains and bookshelves. The small marsupial clings to her shoulder during homework and even sleeps in a soft pouch stitched into her hoodie. 'He's not just a pet—he's my secret buddy, my flying pocket friend who listens to all my silly stories,' she says. Their bond, forged in silence and tiny jumps, has made Mahi more patient and happier, say her parents.advertisementIndia's love affair with pets is no longer confined to dogs and cats—it's now hopping, scuttling and chirping into micropet territory. From dwarf rabbits and hamsters to exotic miniature birds, hedgehogs, gerbils, chinchillas, pygmy mice, geckos, anoles, African dwarf frogs, axolotls, hermit crabs, degus and Australian sugar gliders, small pets have become the new obsession.Beyond companionship, the micro-pet trend thrives on social media spectacle. Tiny pets are more apt to fit into apartments, generate 'cute' content and align with the aspirational lifestyle of young professionals. Microinfluencers tag pets in fashion stories, cafe visits and themed reels to show off pet hamsters in tiny hoodies, parrots on macrame swings, turtles with bow-ties on and dwarf rabbits with tuxedos. Specialty brands offer miniature carriers, custom food mixes, pawdicure kits for small animals and even 'pet influencer kits' complete with LED-lit cages and cameo backgrounds for reel-ready animal selfies.
But fashion meets function too—cooling vests for hedgehogs and harnesses for sugar gliders are becoming popular among serious pet parents. While critics raise concerns about animal comfort, fans say micro-pet fashion is about joy, bonding and share-worthy cuteness. The cuteness is not cheap, though. In metros like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, customers are paying anywhere from Rs 3,000 to Rs 15,000 for a miniature rabbit, Rs 1,500 to Rs 15,000 for hamsters or sugar gliders, and Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 for exotic birds or reptiles. The variety is broad—from mini Pitbull puppies to bearded dragons, parakeets and miniature turtles.By some estimates, India's broader pet-care market, valued at $720million (around Rs 6,300 crore), is projected to shoot up to $25billion (Rs 2.18 lakh crore) by 2032, driven by premiumisation and the urban pet culture. The exotic/small pets segment, valued at $42.6million (around Rs 375 crore) in 2024, is expected to grow to around $76 million (Rs 665 crore) by 2030.Not that there are no challenges post-purchase. Experts warn that exotic pets often require specialised habitats, heating, dietary routines and veterinary care, which many urban owners underestimate. 'They look so innocent, but they poop like machines. I sweep five times a day, and it still feels like a poop sewage tank exploded,' says 20-year-old Mumbai student Bhavana Bhandakar.advertisementA friend of Bhavana reports similar experiences. 'No one tells you that turtle poop smells like wet socks dipped in vomit. And you need tweezers sometimes to clean the tank,' says Ananya Das, also 20.Zoonotic risks, especially from reptiles, also demand extreme caution. Pet abandonment spikes during monsoon months due to increased illness, vet costs or lack of pet-friendly housing—highlighted in Pune and other cities by activists.Nevertheless, the small-pet trend in India is more than a passing fad. It reflects the urban youth's desire for low-maintenance companionship and Instagrammable novelty. But the journey from impulse buy to responsible ownership isn't easy. Veterinary gaps, welfare concerns and regulatory shortcomings risk turning adorable pets into abandoned burdens. While the exotic-pet market is booming, experts urge buyers to treat cute creatures as long-term commitments, not just doodads for social fame.Subscribe to India Today Magazine- Ends

Fan theories spiral as Sam Frank and N3on break up days after Iggy Azalea stream.(instagram/@samxfrank, instagram/@thenewclassic) In a tearful video posted on social media, Sam Frank confirmed the split after two years of dating, saying, 'F--ing hell... me and Mikyle have broken up. We've had a lot of conversations recently…that if we do wanna be together in the future that this is a decision we had to make.' Fighting through tears and pausing to wipe her face with tissues, she told fans, 'We love each other so much... and we really wish we didn't have to do this.' N3on's take: 'I was too comfortable' N3on later shared his side in a solo stream, offering a more introspective take on their decision. 'I had everything, bro,' he said. Son Of Sardaar 2 BO Day 6: Ajay Devgn's Film Struggles Amid Saiyaara Craze, Earns Rs 1 Crore

Last Updated: After its sixth day in theatres, the film's domestic collection stands at around Rs 31 crore. Son of Sardaar 2, directed by Vijay Kumar Arora and starring Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur, continues to face a lukewarm response at the box office. The comedy film, which serves as a sequel to the 2012 hit Son of Sardaar, is expected to gross only about half as much as the original. According to Sacnilk, early estimates suggest the film earned just Rs 1.65 crore on Day 6. This brings the film's domestic total to approximately Rs 31.5 crore. Despite a decent five-day opening with earnings of Rs 29.85 crore, Son of Sardaar 2 has struggled to maintain traction. It collected Rs 2.35 crore on its first Monday and Rs 2.75 crore on Tuesday (Day 5). However, the sharp dip on Wednesday reflects its underwhelming hold at the box office. Ajay Devgn's Son Of Sardaar 2 Fails To Win Audience Ajay Devgn's performance in 2012's Son of Sardaar was well-received, and the film allegedly grossed Rs 150 crore globally on a Rs 40 crore budget. However, the sequel has been unable to match that success or attract audiences to theatres. Son Of Sardaar 2 Faces Multiple Competitions Son of Sardaar 2 continues its underwhelming run at the box office, facing stiff competition from Saiyaara, starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, which remains strong even in its third week. The Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur-starrer is also contending with newer releases like Dhadak 2 and Mahavatar Narsimha, making it difficult for the film to gain steady momentum. In the film, Ajay Devgn reprises his role as Jassi Singh Randhawa, while Mrunal Thakur plays the female lead. The plot revolves around Jassi's turbulent voyage to Scotland to reconcile with his divorced wife, only to become embroiled in mafia rivalries, a chaotic wedding, and a hostage crisis. Ravi Kishan, Roshni Walia, Kubbra Sait, Deepak Dobriyal, Neetu Bajwa, and Sanjay Mishra are also part of the ensemble cast. The late Mukul Dev also makes an appearance in the film Jio Studios and Devgn Films present Son of Sardaar 2. Son of Sardaar 2 was initially slated for release on July 25, 2025, but the date was later shifted to August 1. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Saiyaara box office collection day 20: Aditya Chopra predicted Ahaan Panday, Aneet Padda's film would earn Rs 100 cr; it's earned more than three times as much

Mohit Suri's romantic drama Saiyaara, starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, was never meant to be a Yash Raj Films project. Aditya Chopra's banner is best known for delivering iconic love stories like his late legendary father Yash Chopra's Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Veer-Zaara (2004), and Aditya's own Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Mohabattein (2000), and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008). On the other hand, Suri, who's a product of Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt's Vishesh Films, is renowned for helming Aashiqui 2 (2013), Ek Villain (2014), and Half Girlfriend (2017). But their combination has wielded great results, as Saiyaara has crossed the Rs 500 crore milestone at the worldwide box office and the Rs 300 crore mark at the domestic box office in less than three weeks. It's the highest-grossing romantic film of India, and also the highest-grossing Indian movie starring newcomers. On Wednesday (day 20), it added another Rs 2 crore to the Indian box office, a slight dip from its Tuesday earnings of Rs 2.5 crore. The current box office collection of Saiyaara in India stands at Rs 306.6 crore, as per Sacnilk. In an interview with PTI, Suri revealed that Aditya Chopra had predicted Saiyaara's success, yet probably not to this historic extent. In fact, the producer predicted the film would make Rs 100 crore right after watching just the rough edit. 'I didn't really fall for that I think. I was not too sure. I was still like, 'Let me edit the film. Let me bring it down,'' said Suri. Interestingly, Saiyaara was initially being developed as Aashiqui 3 by Bhushan Kumar's T-Series. However, since Suri wanted to take time in finishing his script, the movie then went to Anurag Basu, who's developing the threequel with Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela. 'Once there was no sequel pressure or of a star cast which had an opening number to live up to, I stopped caring about the commerce. And I just went and made a film,' said Suri, adding, 'If I was making a sequel, or a franchise, I would be somewhere playing to a commerce like 'Let's make it better than Aashiqui 2. Let's make the music better'. I didn't do that. I did what's best for the film. It was such a liberating process.' Also Read — '40-year-old actor insecure by Saiyaara's success': Komal Nahta says star's face fell at Bhushan Kumar's party after hearing verdict for Ahaan Panday's film Saiyaara marks the debut of Aneet, best known for her turn in the Prime Video India coming-of-age show Big Girls Don't Cry last year. It also serves as a launchpad for Ahaan, the first cousin of Ananya Panday and the nephew of Chunky Panday. Both the actors were strategically kept away from promotions, which seems to have paid rich dividends. 'I genuinely felt that if we arm these kids with a story, a narrative, a song, then they have a better fighting chance rather than just the way they look or how they are photographed,' Suri reasons.
