Ex-refugee writer refused entry to see his London play sets 'a worrying precedent'

Balde lives in Madrid and was due to come to London for four days, where he was due to stay with the Olivier award-winning playwright who adapted his book, Timberlake Wertenbaker. His visa application was supported by the Jermyn Street theatre, who were then shocked to learn it had been turned down, with the Home Office writing to Balde that it was, 'not satisfied that you have demonstrated your circumstances are as declared or are as such that you intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit.'

Kerry Katona defends Eamonn Holmes over racial slur comment as he sparks fury on live TV

Kerry Katona has defended her friend Eamonn Holmes after he was accused of making a racial slur towards her during an interview on his GB News breakfast show Kerry Katona came to the defence of Eamonn Holmes following the controversy surrounding the former This Morning host's use of a racial slur during a live broadcast. Kerry, 45, made an appearance on GB News this morning (Thursday) to discuss cosmetic surgery when she revealed the results of her facelift from the previous year. ‌ The mum-of-five looked visibly taken aback when Eamonn used a racially offensive term to describe her eyes - a phrase that has been prohibited by the Home Office since 2021 due to its discriminatory nature, reports the Mirror. ‌ "Are you happy with the eyes?" Eamonn enquired of Kerry, prompting his co-presenter Ellie Costello to praise them, saying "They look good, they look lovely." ‌ Kerry responded positively, saying "Yeah," before elaborating: "I had them done over a year ago now. You know it was making my eyes feel a bit heavy, so I had an uplift. But what I don't like is when..." Yet as Kerry attempted to carry on, Eamonn cut her off with: "And you don't look Oriental or anything, do you?" Taken aback, Kerry paused before replying: "I just wanted the skin removed. I didn't want to change my face; I just wanted the skin that was hanging over my eyes." Taking to her Instagram Stories this afternoon, Kerry expressed her affection for Eamonn, telling him "I love you" and assured her followers she wasn't "left speechless" or upset by the incident. The former I'm A Celeb star declared: "Right guys I've literally just come out from getting my facial, getting my Botox done and I've just seen the papers and the press. ‌ "Eamonn Holmes has been one of my oldest and longest friends and I absolutely adore and love him to bits he said absolutely nothing untoward, towards me - I wasn't offended in anyway shape or form. I absolutely adore Eamonn, I truly adore him. I can't believe what I've just..." She then adds: "Me speechless? It'll take a lot to make me bloody speechless that's for sure. But, Eamonn I love you truly, I adore you, I have no idea where this has come from. I love you Eamonn." ‌ Near the conclusion of his morning programme, following his chat with Kerry, Eamonn found himself compelled to offer an apology to viewers for his earlier use of the term. He said: "Apparently, you're not allowed to describe someone as looking oriental or... I don't know how I would then describe Kerry Katona if her eyes change shape." The host continued: "I don't know how I'm going to say does she look like someone from some other country in the eastern of the world... The world is ridiculous. How you have to apologise for people... if she painted herself or... I don't know, I can't get into this. But anyway. "But Kerry looks beautiful," Ellie interjected. "Kerry looks well," Eamonn concurred, before wrapping up with, "I'm sorry if you don't look well or if we have offended you in any way or... oh, I don't know."
