3 city lakes in Mysuru to be rejuvenated this year

Time of India8 hours ago

Mysuru: Mysuru Development Authority (MDA) will rejuvenate three lakes, including Dalvoy and Devanur, this year.
The restoration project encompasses cleaning, desilting and strengthening of lake bunds.
About Rs 25 crore is reserved for the rejuvenation of the lakes this year. The lakes are dying due to the heavy inflow of sewage water for years.
There are plans to install interceptor drains around the lakes to prevent untreated sewage from entering the water bodies and to prevent further pollution of the lakes. Dalvoy Lake is located off National Highway-766, while Devanur water body is situated northeast of Mysuru city.

The MDA has allocated substantial funds to establish proper drainage systems and create walking paths along the lake periphery.
MDA special land acquisition officer KR Rakshith, who is in-charge commissioner of MDA, told TOI that they have reserved funds for rejuvenating lakes. Another village lake is listed for rejuvenation under its plans.
An officer said the works will start soon, and lake rejuvenation experts will be roped in for the restoration of lakes.

The rejuvenation work includes removing water hyacinth, clearing accumulated waste and establishing natural filtration systems. Plans are also afoot to create green spaces around the lakes with native plant species.
Once restored, these lakes will serve as model projects for urban water body conservation. The authorities plan to implement similar restoration programmes for other lakes in its jurisdiction in a phased manner.

RTO Mohali issues over 33,000 challans, collects Rs 11 crore in 18 months

1 2 3 Mohali: The regional transport officer (RTO), Mohali, has issued more than 33,000 challans and collected a total of Rs 11.09 crore in penalties over the past 18 months, in a joint enforcement drive with the Mohali traffic police. The action is part of a continued crackdown on traffic violations, including a special focus on school buses under the Safe School Vahan Policy. According to RTO Rajpal Singh Sekhon, 1,140 school buses were penalised during this period, an average of about two buses per day, for a range of violations including the absence of CCTV cameras, speed governors, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, valid permits, pollution certificates, fitness documents, GPS systems, drinking water, and proper uniforms for drivers and staff. Sekhon emphasised that ensuring the safety of school children is of utmost importance. "Under the Safe School Vahan Policy, each school is expected to form a transport safety committee to monitor buses operating on different routes. Key safety features such as CCTV cameras, attendants handing over children to parents, and driver uniforms are non-negotiable," he said. In 2025 so far, 4,685 challans have been issued, with a revenue collection of Rs 2,31,19,600, including 386 challans from the RTO office. The combined 18-month tally stands at 33,346 challans and Rs 11,09,30,203 in fines collected. RTO Sekhon also revealed that during surprise inspections of school buses, several institutions were found violating safety norms, which led to the issuance of numerous challans. He warned that such inspections will continue, and strict action will be taken against schools that fail to comply with transport safety regulations. The department aims to ensure greater adherence to traffic norms and promote safer road practices, especially for school-going children.

Parliament must fix appeal anomaly in Sr Citizens Act, Karnataka HC rules

Bengaluru: Karnataka high court has ruled that it is for the Parliament to rectify the anomaly in the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, concerning appeal remedies. The court further said the Law Commission of India needed to examine this issue to suggest suitable amendments. Justice Suraj Govindaraj made this observation while reviewing two separate petitions filed by a mother on one side and her son, along with the daughter-in-law, on the other. Both parties had challenged a January 29, 2020, order issued by the assistant commissioner, Bangalore North sub-division, acting as a tribunal under the Senior Citizens Act. "Normally, if a senior citizen or parent is aggrieved by an order passed by the assistant commissioner, the remedy available is an appeal under Section 16 of the Senior Citizens Act. If a son, daughter, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, or a third party who is not a senior citizen or parent is aggrieved by the order, the remedy of an appeal under Section 16 of the Senior Citizens Act is not available to them," Justice Govindaraj clarified. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru He further observed that a person who is not a senior citizen would need to approach the high court under Article 226 and 227 of the Constitution of India to challenge such an order. If both parties are aggrieved and both are to file writ petitions, then both the petitions will have to be considered together and a common order will have to be passed, the judge ruled, adding that such a complicated scenario can only be addressed by the Parliament. In the case at hand, the mother had filed an application to reclaim a residential unit at Mahalakshmipuram and to reconvey a gifted property at HSR Layout. The assistant commissioner directed the reconveyance of the site at HSR Layout to the mother and ordered that she be provided with accommodation at the Mahalakshmipuram house. However, considering the gift deed pertaining to HSR Layout was dated August 5, 2005, prior to the coming into force of the Senior Citizens Act, the judge ruled that the said transaction could not be challenged under the Act. Regarding the Mahalakshmipuram property, the judge remitted the matter back to the assistant commissioner for fresh consideration.

12 days after AI 171 crash, medicalstudents gather to start new mess

Ahmedabad: On the fateful day of June 12 when the Air India 171 crashed into the BJ Medical College UG, PG hostel mess building killing four medicos having their lunch and injuring 24 others, Dr Smit Patel escaped by a matter of minutes as he chose to have a quick early lunch that day and leave in a rush for work. A medical intern, Patel got overwhelmed with emotion as the hostel students gathered for the puja ceremony for a new mess starting operations, albeit at a new premise. "It all comes back – the commotion, the relief and rescue work, the arrival of all agencies… But after 12 days of the incident, what matters most is the resilience of the medical students who worked tirelessly in face of all adversities and faced the challenge of suffering personal losses and yet reporting for duty for hundreds dead and injured in the plane crash. In such circumstances, the start of the mess is a sign of new hope," says Patel. On Tuesday, the students performed puja at the ground floors of Sopanam 7-8 and Atulyam 11-12 under the guidance of a priest, praying for the departed souls and seeking blessings for new beginnings. These open spaces are currently converted into makeshift kitchens complete with stoves and utensils. The exams are approaching, and ensuring regular food was a priority. After the exams are over in about a month's time, hopefully all will be in order," said Dr Kevin Kotadiya, pursuing his internship and coordinators for the initiative. "Some of the mess cooks got injured when the plane suddenly crashed into the mess building and are still recuperating. But we will bring them back soon." After the irreparable damage to no less than three buildings including hostel mess in the crash, the major challenge for the authorities was to arrange for basic amenities. Medicos not directly involved in treatment of the injured were sent home by the authorities. The measure was also to calm the nerves of the parents and relatives of the medical students, said authorities. Dr Minakshi Parikh, dean of BJ Medical College, said that the students have taken initiative to set up the mess which will also be managed by them currently. "The state government has arranged for the utensils required and ration for one month. We have also requested the authorities to ensure restoration of the water and sewage connection damaged in the incident," she said. The menu will be simple – chapati, daal, rice, and two curries for the tiffins to be supplied to about 1000 doctors and students living on the campus. For the evenings, the committee of students has decided on a rotating menu including Pav Bhaji and Dal Baati among others. Dr Shrut Patel, another medical intern, said that the primary purpose of starting the mess is two-fold. "The outside food is not good in the long run for health. Likewise, it is also expensive. As it is managed by the student committee, the attempt is to ensure that the per meal cost does not exceed Rs 70-80 while ensuring hygiene and quality," he said. The cooks and support staff that got injured in the incident had earlier told TOI that it will take some time for them to go back on their previous jobs with contractors. But they had expressed a wish to join the mess and be part of the medical student community's daily life again.
