3 city lakes in Mysuru to be rejuvenated this year

Time of India24-06-2025
Mysuru: Mysuru Development Authority (MDA) will rejuvenate three lakes, including Dalvoy and Devanur, this year.
The restoration project encompasses cleaning, desilting and strengthening of lake bunds.
About Rs 25 crore is reserved for the rejuvenation of the lakes this year. The lakes are dying due to the heavy inflow of sewage water for years.
There are plans to install interceptor drains around the lakes to prevent untreated sewage from entering the water bodies and to prevent further pollution of the lakes. Dalvoy Lake is located off National Highway-766, while Devanur water body is situated northeast of Mysuru city.

MDA special land acquisition officer KR Rakshith, who is in-charge commissioner of MDA, told TOI that they have reserved funds for rejuvenating lakes. Another village lake is listed for rejuvenation under its plans.
An officer said the works will start soon, and lake rejuvenation experts will be roped in for the restoration of lakes.

The rejuvenation work includes removing water hyacinth, clearing accumulated waste and establishing natural filtration systems. Plans are also afoot to create green spaces around the lakes with native plant species.
Once restored, these lakes will serve as model projects for urban water body conservation. The authorities plan to implement similar restoration programmes for other lakes in its jurisdiction in a phased manner.

Power line project: Forum warns of legal battles

Mangaluru: The Society for Forest, Environment and Climate Change (SFECC) has warned of legal battles in several cases of non-implementation of govt orders, policies, and guidelines in connection with the implementation of the 400KVA power line from Padubidri to Kasaragod-Phase 2. SFECC secretary Benedict Fernandes told reporters here on Saturday that under the proposed project, towers are being erected without environmental clearance and biodiversity clearance. He said Udupi Kasaragode Transmission Ltd (UKTL) plans to lay a 115km 400KVA transmission line from Padubidri to Kasaragod, and has only received in-principle approval (Phase 1) from the ministry of environment, forest and climate change. "It is informed that the project proponent is doing illegal work without obtaining Stage II clearance, environment clearance, and biodiversity clearance," he said, alleging that 35 towers were set up for the project illegally in violation of Stage I clearance. "No work can be commenced after obtaining only Stage I clearance on the Parivesh portal for projects requiring forest clearance. Stage I clearance is an in-principle approval and signifies that the proposal has been accepted in principle. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Final approval (Stage II clearance) is required before any work can begin on the ground," he said. Fernandes alleged destruction of nearly 1.78 lakh trees besides health hazards due to the project. SFECC demands that all illegal structures, including towers raised for the project, should be razed. He said the project proponent should lay the transmission lines underground, a technology which is being used throughout the world. Restore properties of innocent farmers who were lured to sacrifice their land, he said. 400KVA Power Line Action Committee member Chandrahas Shetty said if the project proponent succeeds in obtaining Stage II clearance, the latter has to identify the farmers whose land will be affected while laying the transmission lines and pay compensation as per supplementary guidelines issued by the ministry of power on March 21, 2025. Accordingly, the compensation amount to be fixed is the market value of the land, and this has to be decided by the five-member committee involving the DC as its chairman, he said, and demanded that the state govt issue guidelines on the same. Uttarakhand rains: 245 villages affected in 14 Years; govt spends Rs 111 crore on rehabilitation

DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand is reeling under the devastating impact of the annual monsoon season, with 245 villages ravaged by landslides, floods, and cloudbursts over the past 14 years. This translates to an alarming average of 17 villages lost each year, forcing thousands from their ancestral homes. The human cost of this recurring natural fury is immense, compounded by property losses running into crores of rupees. Families are routinely uprooted, compelled to abandon their homes and seek refuge in safer locations. So far, the state government has undertaken rehabilitation and displacement procedures for 2,629 affected families. "The scale of this challenge is unprecedented," remarked a senior official from the State Disaster Management Authority, speaking on condition of anonymity. "We are not just managing disasters; we are constantly relocating entire communities. The financial burden is substantial, but the safety of our citizens is paramount." Indeed, the financial strain on the state exchequer is significant. More than Rs 111 crore has already been expended on the displacement and rehabilitation of affected families. For the current fiscal year (2025-26), a budgetary provision of Rs 20 crore was made for the rehabilitation and relocation of disaster-affected villages. To date, Rs 11.44 crore has been released, facilitating the rehabilitation and displacement of 255 families across 12 villages.
